Manchester United have endured their worst start to the Premier League since the 2001-02 season. We look at five things United must get done fast to get their season back on track.
David Moyes may not have been able to get the spectacular start to his stint as Manchester United manager that he wouldai??i??ve hoped for as he read the morning papers reporting him as Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s successor in early July, but there is still time for him to turn the corner and save Unitedai??i??s season. In the 2001-02 season, United had 21 points from 14 games, worse than the current season. And United finished third that season. However, a lot has changed in the Premier League in the next twelve years with ever increasing competition and more frequent giant killing the norm.
Old Trafford has been far from a giant stadium in recent times with Everton and Newcastle getting full points at the once feared ground in the Premier League. Thierry Henry admitted as a TV pundit that when he was playing for Arsenal, there was a fear of going to Old Trafford. Such a fear, he conceded is absent now. Manchester Unitedai??i??s quest for the title might be all but over, but there are still things to do that could salvage their season now. We look at the five crucial things United must do to save their season.
1. Handle the Van Persie-Rooney partnership with care
When it rains, it pours. Robin van Persie has been ruled out for a month and this means he will miss the busy festive period for United. It is imperative for United to get Van Persie back to full fitness as soon possible. Moyes may be blamed a bit for rushing the Dutchman back in the game against Newcastle ai??i?? an act borne out of desperation to get points and climb up the Premier League table, but the Scot has to be wise and pragmatic about how he should use Van Persie now.
The Dutch striker has been injury prone throughout his career and now at 30, it is understandable he might need more time to get back to full fitness. Moyes should respect this if he wants Van Persie to last the remainder of the season for United. Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, might now be relishing a chance to lead Unitedai??i??s attack in his preferred role. Nevertheless, there is no denying that United are at their best when Van Persie heads the attack and Rooney plays the Number 10 role he is so good at.
Bad luck with injuries and suspensions has meant that United have only played eight games out of fifteen this season with these two playing up front together. And it is hardly surprising that United have won six and drawn two of those eight games. David Moyes is desperate for points, something that was evident by the inclusion of a less than fit Robin Van Persie in the starting line-up against Newcastle to counter the absence of a suspended Rooney. Of the 22 goals United have scored this season, Rooney and Van Persie have accounted for 15. To add another dimension to this statistic, Rooney has had eight goals and seven assists this season, which means he alone has had a hand in 68.1% of all United goals.
Hence, it is no mystery that Rooney and Van Persie together form the main goal threat for United and all Moyes needs now is better judgment and some luck to ensure his main men get as much game time together if United are to climb up the table to more familiar heights.
2. Use the January transfer window well
One of the most glaring conclusions to come out of Unitedai??i??s season so far is that they need quality players. And there are a lot of positions that need strengthening. Midfield seems the most urgent though, with the injured Michael Carrick, the only passer of note in the team. Phil Jones has been impressive in his defensive midfield position, but United need to shop for one or two quality midfielders, who can create and keep the game ticking with their passing and movement. Talk of Wesley Sneijder coming in January from Galatasaray has been quashed by the Dutch playmaker himself, but United might make an attempt to lure out-of-favour Juan Mata from Chelsea; United need that bit of creative genius, in a midfield devoid of a creative playmaker.
The left back position comes to notice next. Patrice Evra has been excellent in attacking positions for United in the past few seasons, but his defensive work is questionable. He was indeed at fault for the goal United conceded against Newcastle when he didnai??i??t do as expected with a defensive header, allowing Sissoko to square the ball for Cabaye to slot into the goal. The 32 year old doesnai??i??t look reassured or composed at the back and Moyes must line up a replacement for him in January if he needs to quash out mistakes like the one against Newcastle.
There is a host of Manchester United players who will not walk into any of the top four sides in the Premier League. Tom Cleverley, Nani, Anderson and Ashley Young have all had very ordinary seasons and getting replacements for them in January would do United a world of good. Freddy Guarin of Inter Milan is the box to box midfielder that United have missed ever since Roy Keaneai??i??s departure and getting him to Old Trafford will be a step in the right direction. Atletico Madridai??i??s creative midfielder Koke is also on the radar. These two players could boost a midfield riddled with problems in the absence of Michael Carrick and Moyes must move fast in January to redeem himself after the fiasco of the summer transfer window earlier in the season.
3. Sort out the best eleven soon
While Sir Alex Ferguson made minor tweaks to his starting eleven for every game of the season, there was a sense of consistency and familiarity in the roles the players had to perform. David Moyes, who is understandably trying out his combinations at a new club, has not been able to communicate to players what their primary positions are.
Chris Smalling, a centre half by trade, has been used more at right back. So has Phil Jones in midfield instead of defence. We still donai??i??t know where Marouane Fellaini fits in Moyesai??i??s plan ai??i?? is he a stop gap midfielder in Carrickai??i??s absence or is he being saved for a Number 10 role when the squad is thin. In short, no one knows what the Manchester United best starting eleven is right now.
More important than all these examples is that of the Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa. It is not hard to surmise that the number 10 position, the playmakerai??i??s role is what Kagawa thrives on. He has shown time and again that he is most effective when he plays behind the striker, looking to find wingers and midfielders making advanced runs into the box. However, in spite of evidence backing this up, Kagawa has been shunted to the left wing far too often.
This may be to accommodate a Van Persie-Rooney combination up front, but Moyes must recognize Kagawa is far from effective on the left wing. Although Moyes looks to be trying to increase Kagawaai??i??s repertoire to include left wing to the positions he can play well in, but the time right now is to stick with the trusted and not try too much too soon.
It is true that players should be versatile enough to play anywhere on the pitch but not too much time can be afforded to experimentation now. Moyes must settle on a preferred formation and a preferred set of players. Against Newcastle, he went with two up front ai??i?? Javier Hernandez and a less than fit Van Persie in an attempt to go on the offensive. However, neither of these players is adept at linking up play with the midfield, the result of which could be seen in an abject display of confusion between the midfield and the two attackers. The team played like strangers and there was not much in the way of service to a lethargic Van Persie and an isolated Hernandez. Had Marouane Fellaini been used in the hole, the cohesiveness between midfield and attack might have been greater and more effective.
4. Moyes must stamp his own authority
Quite often United have looked lacking in confidence when they play. There is a nervousness and indecisiveness in their play that is uncharacteristic of the United of old. The high intensity passing game is lost at the moment, the quick one touch passes on the edge of the box are nowhere to be seen – what United lack now is a new ideology.
With Sir Alex gone and Moyes still introducing his ideas at the club, there seems to be a sense of loss in transition for the players. With the exception of Wayne Rooney, no player at the club has looked like their previous best. It could be a lack of motivation, although the general feedback from the players Moyes has managed has been that the Scot is a playersai??i?? manager and has no trouble motivating and bringing up youngsters. The problem now seems to be a fear in the dressing room ai??i?? a fear of not achieving what they did last season and a fear of the unknown now that Sir Alex is no longer an active part of the Old Trafford furniture.
Moyes has in the past always been in a situation where he has performed well in an environment without high expectations or the glaring spotlight. Indeed Moyes endured his worst season as Everton manager soon after their Champions League qualifying season in 2005-06, when his Everton side spent large parts of the first half of the season in the relegation zone. Moyes led Everton to an 11th place finish that season so he has shown grit and determination to get out of tough spots in the past.
However, the time is now for Moyes to stamp his authority on the team. By his own admission, Moyes is the kind of man who takes time to figure out his team and players but no more teething time can be afforded now. Failure to finish in the top four would be a travesty for this club and Moyes must impress upon the players to look to the future and to let go of the past Sir Alex was a part of.
5. Sort out the identity crisis
Manchester United, right now, look to be suffering from an identity crisis. They are the defending Premier League champions, the most successful team in the Premier League era yet they find themselves in ninth place after fifteen games, hardly the sign of champions. Their hallowed turf at Old Trafford, once feared by visiting opponents, has been the backdrop for embarrassing defeats to Everton and Newcastle.
The defending champions, who should be swaggering against teams like Cardiff City, Southampton and Newcastle, have been left in self doubt after the recent turn of events. Confidence is low at Old Trafford and most players in this side look good enough for a mid table side at best. David Moyes must sort out this confidence crisis as soon as possible. Defending champions should play as such and the confidence will be back only when a string of wins is achieved during this busy festive period.
Rather than playing with the weight of the crown on their heads, Moyes must ensure his team take it one game at a time. It is no surprise that United have performed well in Europe this season, an arena where they arenai??i??t favourites. Top of their Champions League group, Moyes must draw a similar analogy to get results in theleague. United must forget they are defending champions and play with a freedom that expresses their inherent free-flowing high tempo football.
Unitedai??i??s next six games in the league are away at Aston Villa, Hull City and Norwich City and at home to West Ham United, Tottenham and Swansea City. Itai??i??s not an impossible task to get at least five wins out of these six games. If United get that string of results, it would set them right back on track for a strong top four finish in the season.
