On Sunday, the Premier League will witness a fixture that has been the fiercest competitive rivalry in the Premier League era.
There may be local derbies that evoke more passion locally, but if there is one fixture that has been explosive over the course of the past two decades of Premier League football purely on the competitive nature of the two teams, it is Manchester United versus Arsenal. No other club in the Premier League can boast of such long spells of dominance than these two.

From the infamous Pizzagate scandal after a match to the Clash of the Captains in the tunnel before the match and from the disgraceful behavior of the Arsenal players in the Ruud van Nistelrooy incident; From the Gunners winning the league in Unitedai??i??s backyard in 2002 to the 8-2 mauling they received at Old Trafford almost a decade later, the Manchester United-Arsenal clashes have always been the stuff of legend.
This particular fixture dawns upon us with Arsenal in a rich vein of form, top of the table and looking confident on the back of their win against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. United, on the other hand, have had a stuttering start to the campaign and languish in eighth position in the league. This is David Moyesai??i??s first experience of a United ai??i??Arsenal battle as Arsene Wenger, a veteran of 17 years in this fixture, looks quietly confident ahead of the trip north to Old Trafford.
Our resident fans duke it out before the match. Debashree Mitra (DM) is a hard core Arsenal supporter, who would rather lose his belongings than watch his team lose to United on Sunday. Dushyant Sinha (DS) has been a United fan for thirteen years now and still has nightmares about Sylvain Wiltordai??i??s winner at Old Trafford in 2002. The two engaged in some banter before the game.
Round One: DS sets the ball rolling by hurling questions at Arsenal fan DM
DS: You must be feeling the most confident you have in years going into a match at Old Trafford. Arsenal are top of the league table with United suffering in eighth. Do you think Arsenal can continue their good start to their league season at a ground where they have won only three times since 1992?
DM: Old Trafford has statistically been one of the worst away places for Arsene Wenger to take us, but right now we are riding a crest and are undefeated in 15 games on the road. To add to that Man United have looked uncomfortable on home turf themselves, so it’s fair to say we are well capable of getting a result on Sunday. The added incentive of staying atleast 5 points clear heading into the international break will act as further incentive.
DS: Last season Robin van Persie took just 3 minutes to score against the Gunners at Old Trafford. To top it, Wayne Rooney has an exceptional record against Arsenal, scoring his first Premier League goal, his first Premier League goal for United and his 100th Premier League goal against them. How do you expect the slow Mertesacker and the at times indecisive Koscielny to deal with these two expert marksmen, who are beginning to finally find an understanding on the pitch?
DM: Rooney and Robin are brilliant individuals and have had an interesting chemistry from day 1 but Koscielny-Mertesacker are no pushovers. They have been Arsenal’s best centre back pairing since the Campbell-Toure partnership of the Invincibles era and despite naysayers still doubting them both Per and Kos have been in excellent form this season. If they were good enough to shut out SAS last week, they surely can serve the same treatment to Rooney-RvP but Flamini and Arteta need to be up for the task in protecting the defenders as well. Defences win titles and if Arsenal can keep the United pair quiet on Sunday, it will speak volumes of their credentials.
DS: Wayne Rooney has talked about how Arsenal usually shoot themselves in the foot after initially doing well. You are chokers ai??i?? losing the Premier League title in 2007-08 to United after being top at Christmas, conceding a silly goal to Birmingham in the league cup final more recently. Do you think Rooneyai??i??s reminder will psych out Wengerai??i??s boys?
DM: The defeats to Birmingham, the horrific leg injury of Eduardo, the 8-2 defeat are all encrypted in Arsene Wenger’s blood and he will only use it as a springboard to prepare his team for Sunday. The spirit in this team is excellent and the players play for each other. We are no more the kids of 07-08, Wenger has added smartly to build a team of experienced internationals who know what it is like to bounce back from a win and sustain a challenge. In fact in the last two seasons our best performances have been post-Christmas. One game at a time for now.
DS: Arsenal may be top of the league, but to be fair, they havenai??i??t faced the top Premier League sides yet except for Liverpool. This could be the start of their decline. Remember it was United who broke Arsenalai??i??s historic unbeaten streak in the league in 2004. Do you think too much has been made of Arsenalai??i??s early success too soon?
DM: I understand nobody considers Tottenham a top premier league side but they are doing quite well in the league, don’t you think? We beat them and convincingly too. The thing is there is no easy fixture in this league. Would you call an away trip to Swansea an easy one or a home game to Stoke a difficult one? But we know how that turned out. The early success might be a misnomer and I personally will wait till we are in December to draw any conclusions. As for United, they cannot dent our title aspirations, because irrespective of the result we will be top of the table coming back from the international break. The cushion is important and shows how good we have been so far.
P.S: Since you brought 2004 up, Rooney dived in that game and Mike Riley had a nightmare. If that is how you plan to begin our so called “decline”, then good luck.
DS: Are Arsenal too dependent on Aaron Ramsey? With all due respect, he is the sort of player who hits form in patches; unlike Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale in previous years who have been consistent throughout the Premier League season. Do you think Arsenalai??i??s time at the top will end when Ramseyai??i??s goals dry up?
DM: Personally I would rather like Ramsey to be a Gerrard/Lampard than a Bale/Ronaldo. Aaron Ramsey has a lot more to his game than the goals. This has been the first time since 2005 that we have a team that is not individual-centric. From Henry to Fabregas to van Persie we have always had a team formed around an individual until now. When Ramsey ain’t scoring he is assisting, or pre-assisting or tackling or bringing players into play. His “form in patches” that you refer to is purely related to goals and even if they dry up his value doesn’t drop one bit as long as he keeps playing the way he is. The confidence is up there and the fact that he is such a team player, means he raises the quality of the team all by himself when in top gear.
Round Two: DM hits back with questions of his own
DM: The season after SAF was always going to be an uneasy and uncomfortable ride. What are the realistic expectations from this season, and despite the slagging-off from certain corners, how secure is Moyes’ job right now?
DS: The staunchest defender of Unitedai??i??s season would admit that this hasnai??i??t been the ideal start. It has been tough for Moyes and this was expected. When things change after a long time, there are a lot of teething problems. The managerial change at United has happened after twenty seven years. Most of us at THT are not even that old! So, there are bound to be problems initially. Having said that, I think Moyes has started to apply himself well at the toughest managerial job in the world. His attempts at fixing Unitedai??i??s midfield problems showed his vision and ambition, his push for Adnan Januzajai??i??s role in the starting eleven shows his ability to nurture young talent and the way he has handled the Wayne Rooney situation has shown immense composure ai??i?? in fact, we are now seeing Rooney and van Persie perform well in tandem.
I would say Moyes definitely needs more time to get acclimatized to top level football management and he does have the backing of SAF and the fans. I do think his job will be secure even if United do not land any silverware this season. We are not a club that hires and fires at the drop of a hat and we are proud of it. I think qualifying for the Champions League next season is the minimum expectation but donai??i??t rule out winning the title just yet ai??i?? we are only eight points behind and as history shows, we only get better as the season progresses!
DM: David Moyes will be on the sidelines for an Arsenal-United match for the first time, do you think he can handle the pressure of the big games after only 1 point against the 3 big teams you have faced so far?
DS: Yes, I think Moyes has the required mental toughness for big games. He might not have had such expectations of him at Everton, but so far Moyes has looked composed and sure of himself in the face of a dodgy start to the season. Two of the games against the big three have been difficult away matches and we went there in uncertain times. As Moyes grows more confident of himself in the Old Trafford hot seat, Iai??i??m sure we will be back to winning the big matches.
DM: The Manchester United midfield problems are no secret and with Fellaini unable to assert himself as of now, the problems seem to have compounded further. With Arsenal killing Liverpool in the middle of the park last weekend, what could possibly stop them from overrunning an average midfield like that of United’s?
DS: Yes, midfield is one aspect of Unitedai??i??s game that worries me at the moment. I think Moyes will have to be tactically astute in picking a midfield that neutralizes the quality of Ramsey, Ozil and Arteta. Michael Carrick sort of picks himself, but it would be interesting to see who partners him. I honestly thought Marouanne Fellaini did a good job against Real Sociedad in the Champions League before he was shown a second yellow for a forceful challenge. I think Fellaini might do well against Arsenal. The Gunners midfield love to pass the ball and Fellaini is the sort of player who would outmuscle the opposing midfielders off the ball. We need a ball winner to partner Carrick on Sunday and Fellaini as the ability. Although, I would prefer Phil Jones to play that role, because of his absolutely fantastic work-ethic and unparalleled commitment to a tackle. Moyes left Jones on the bench against Sociedad so I think he would play on Sunday and I would love to see him in midfield battering the Arsenal midielders and running them ragged.
DM: For all of van Persie’s goals United’s main men have been Januzaj and Rooney. In case of an injury to either or both of these influential players, what would be United’s contingency plan considering Kagawa is yet to apply himself fully and the wingers look out of sorts?
DS: I think Unitedai??i??s strength has been attack this season. The trio of Van Persie, Rooney and Januzaj looks exciting and menacing. Javier Hernandez as a super sub also looks like scoring every time he sets foot on the pitch. However, if an injury were to happen to Rooney or Januzaj, it would be tough to replace them. But, we have had players step up before and I believe we have quality players who when turned to, usually deliver. If Rooney were to pick up a knock, I think Fellaini is the man to take up the role in the hole as he did so brilliantly for Everton. I think Moyes had one eye on his versatility when he signed Fellaini ai??i?? and who better to know about Fellainiai??i??s strengths than Moyes himself. Incidentally, Kagawa did well against Sociedad when given Rooneyai??i??s role, so I think if he is given more opportunity, he can contribute.
As far as Januzaj goes, I think we have enough wingers to be effective. They may not be hot on form as Januzaj is but the likes of Valencia and Nani have the ability to take the game to opposing full backs. Anyway, this is one situation Arsenal should be more worried about if it happened to them. You have little cover in midfield if Ramsey picks up a knock; you have no forwards to effectively replace Olivier Giroud if he gets injured. So I think this is a conundrum that most teams in the league face.
DM: Man United barring the first 45 minutes at Fulham have been below par all season. A defeat on Sunday could see them 11 points behind Arsenal with 11 games played. How much would such a result have a bearing on what the fans expect this season? Would such a scenario bring Moyes under the scanner more than ever? With Spurs, Everton and Leverkusen to play in the space of 7 days, things look very tricky for the Red Devils.
DS: A home loss will always bring the new manager under the scanner. A defeat to Arsenal will not be taken well and Moyes cannot afford any more slip-ups. But I believe this is the time United will turn things around. The first half performance against Fulham showed that the players are finally finding their feet under Moyes. We have always been slow starters in the Premier League and we get stronger and tougher as the season progresses.
I think Moyes has seen tougher matches as United boss than Spurs, who are struggling to score goals, Everton who lie in seventh position and Leverkusen who were disposed off 4-2 in September. I think itai??i??ll be a test of Unitedai??i??s strength in depth and a definite opportunity for Moyes to show that he can manage to bring out the best in the players in all these matches through squad rotation and tactics etc. It will surely be a big test, but one that Iai??i??m confident we will pass.
