This is a familiar statement often heard from manager Brendan Rodgers during his first season at Liverpool. Over the last season, he has tried to set up the team to “build from the back”. While steady progress has been made towards the playing style that the manager wants to see, some unusual defensive errors have often undone the good work done further upfield. More than anyone else, it was the performances of Martin Skrtel that came under an increasing level of scrutiny. The Slovakian was named Liverpool Player of the Year in 2011-12, but a calamitous back pass in Liverpoolai??i??s second game of the season planted the seeds of doubt in his ability to fit in the squad under the new manager. The change in approach to building attacks from the back under the new manager may have unsettled him, but it was Christian Benteke running the Liverpool defence ragged at Anfield that set alarms ringing.
When the gaffer decided that it was time to act, off went Skrtel and in came Jamie Carragher. While Skrtel did manage to sneak in another appearance at Oldham (we know how that went), it was felt that Carragherai??i??s leadership qualities were the need of the hour for a defence that looked like a disaster waiting to happen. What Carragher had in experience, he lacked in speed, and hence it was not possible to play the high defensive line that the manager wished to see. Liverpool soon turned into a wonderful counter-attacking unit after the New Year and played some of the best football seen at Anfield in a while. But Jamie Carragherai??i??s decision to announce that he would retire at the end of the season has forced Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to make wholesale changes at the back.
Not just in the centre
Liverpool were not just suspect in the centre. Jose Enriqueai??i??s form is rhythmic. When he is in form, he is capable of pulling off the spectacular. However, there were occasions when he would frustrate crowds at home games, from an attacking standpoint, and struggle against top wingers defensively. On the other hand (or should we say, flank), not many full-backs attack better than Glen Johnson. And his defending is vastly better than in the past, when the Gareth Bales of the world would punish him at the slightest opportunity. Meanwhile, the sight of Stewart Downing as a left back lined up against Aaron Lennon is a little scary. He is better off further upfield.
It was not quite annus horribilis in 2012-13 (Liverpool conceded 43 goals, vs. 40 in 2011-12), but individual mistakes and shakiness at the back can be the difference between a place in the Champions League and a slot in mid-table.
Options at Liverpoolai??i??s disposal, and likely scenarios
As things stand, the Agger-Skrtel combination could be back during the early stages of the season. There arenai??i??t many defenders in the Premier League who are better with the ball at their feet than Daniel Agger. Moreover, he has done a great job keeping fit, with only Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson making more Premier League appearances than him in 2012-13. Martin Skrtel combined extremely well with the Dane in 2011, as the chemistry between the two enabled strong performances from them as a unit. Although Skrtel is nowhere as good as Agger with the ball at his feet, he is mobile enough. His ability to use his strength was seen to be his forte, but watching him get bullied by Matt Smith is a worry. Whether it was due to lack of confidence or ability is debatable, but he could get a chance to redeem himself by Brendan Rodgers if he stays at the club.
Kolo Toure making the short journey to Merseyside via the East Lancs Road has also given the option of pairing him along with Daniel Agger. One must not forget that he is one of the few players to have won Premier League titles with two different clubs ai??i?? and is, in fact, one of the few title winners to have played for Liverpool recently. He brings Brendan Rodgersai??i?? much desired “winning mentality” with him, and complements Aggerai??i??s elegance with strength in the air. He has not lost all the pace he had while being a part of The Invincibles, and his part-time role under Roberto Mancini over the last two seasons would surely leave him wanting to prove himself again. He could prove to be a handy option for the Reds.
Liverpoolai??i??s strength in depth at right back has also given them a certain amount of flexibility. Glen Johnson is the clubai??i??s premier right back. However, his ability to use both feet allows him to deputize for Jose Enrique at times of necessity. Given his fitness record, it is likely that he would feature regularly on the right flank. On the left, Jose Enrique may be inconsistent but has shown enough over the past season that he can hold his own whenever he plays.
Academy graduate Andre Wisdom is a centre half by trade, but as with most young defenders, featured regularly in place of Glen Johnson at right back in 2013, making 19 starts in all competitions. He is strong in the air but also has a fair bit of pace on him. Martin Kelly too, is a centre half, but has spent most of Liverpool career as a right back. What has served them well during their time at full back though is their ability with the ball. They may not be as talented as Glen Johnson going forward, but are comfortable enough on the ball to be the ball-playing centre halves that a manager Brendan Rodgers is looking for. Moreover, their impressive performances whenever called upon, on the right flank, proves their ability to hold a high defensive line. They may be Liverpoolai??i??s future, but one does not become good enough without the opportunities to prove himself. With no Europa League to look forward to, they must feature in the Capital One Cup and the FA Cup this upcoming season and should be eased into regular Premier League action.
Possible changes to the squad
Sebastian Coates has not had the best of times since making the switch to Anfield on the back of his impressive showing in the 2011 Copa America. The solidity of the Agger-Skrtel combo in 2011-12 restricted his playing time, while he looked nervous whenever he got a chance. He is a colossal presence at 6′ 6″, but his weakness against Matt Smith at Oldham looked worrying. Coates is not a bad player with the ball at his feet, but lack of pace (versus Kelly and Wisdom) makes things difficult for him. Loaning him out may not be the most prudent thing to do, though. His strength lies in his positional sense, and he would be better served being sold to a club in Spain or Italy that makes use of his positive attributes. Moreover, with this being a World Cup year, regular game time would surely be welcome.
Contrary to the reports floating around, loaning out Martin Skrtel does not make sense either. He has spent four seasons in the Premier League. The majority of time has been spent as a squad player, but he has had good seasons in the past. He is not a young man, and would much rather be sold outright if he were to leave the club. However, should he show signs of gaining his confidence back, it would be good to see if the Agger-Skrtel combine can flourish once again.
Given the likely departures of two central defenders from Liverpool, the Reds would surely look for replacements this transfer window. Liverpoolai??i??s fascination for big Greek defenders has seen them linked with Kyriakos Papadopoulos. He is said to have recently regained fitness after long-standing knee trouble. Although he is fairly skilled with the ball and has the body strength to hold off opponents, it is difficult to see him slot straight into the starting lineup. He is 21 years old, and his presence could stifle the growth of Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom, unless the latter is sent on loan. Tiago Ilori is another possible acquisition, given his pace and skill on the ball (at least if you believe YouTube highlights), although interest does seem to have died out.
The gaffer has also publicly stated his intentions to strengthen the left side of the defense. Jack Robinson has just been sent on loan to Blackpool for the coming season. He has impressed against Theo Walcott in the past, so it is hoped that the fight for promotion with the Tangerines makes him a better player one season from now. Lorenzo Melgarejo of Benfica is touted as a possible back up to Jose Enrique, while there has been interest in Aly Cissokho of Valencia. The latter on loan seems a better fit due to his superior positional sense and solidity.
Honourable mention must be made of the options available to the manager from The Academy. The manager would surely not have entertained the thought of putting him up against Dimitar Berbatov, but including him in the squad for the trip to Fulham surely means that he sees long term potential in 17-year-old Welshman Lloyd Jones. Northern Irish right back Ryan McLaughlin has caught the eye in the academy and faced up to Francesco Totti in Boston one year ago; he will surely make his debut this season. 19-year-old Brad Smith was on track to attaining a place on the bench late last season but for injuries.
Even though Jamie Carragher will be missed, Liverpool FC are blessed with a variety options that include exciting prospects at The Academy. Any decision taken by Brendan Rodgers with regard to the makeup of the defence will be done keeping in mind the motive of building the defence for the long term. One can trust the scouts to come up with a solution soon, so that the manager can build a defensive unit to help the squad make the push for Champions League football.
