As the Blue Tigers crashed to yet another defeat after their memorable Nehru Cup triumph it wouldn’t be unfair to say that Wim Koevermans needs to do bit of a re-think on his strategy and team composition as he looks to guide India towards AFC Asian CupAi??qualification. Ai??The teamAi??suddenlyAi??looks out of form and some players look woefully unfit. Let us take a look at some of the issues plaguing Team India as they prepare for the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers in March.
Wrong Selection in Midfield
Wim Koevermans has time and again overlooked Prayag Unitedai??i??s midfield general Lalkamal Bhowmick. For the past two seasons now, the Bhowmik has been one of the most consistent local midfielders in the I-League. His knack of scoring goals from midfield should have given him a clear edge over Churchill Brothers midfielder Lenny Rodrigues, whose form in I-League this season has not reached the level that he displayed in Nehru Cup. Lennyai??i??s fragile frame makes him vulnerable against the tall and burly West Asian players. Though in the first half Lenny was average, his second half performance left a lot to be desired. His accurate passing was replaced by a flurry of mispasses as Ai??India failed to get into any sort of rhythm in second half.
The Indian midfield also tends to wilt away when put under sustained pressure from the opposition. Once put under pressure, the Indian midfield failed to string decent passes together, resulting in very few feeder balls to the strike force. What India desperately needs in midfield are strong players who can hold the ball long enough so the wingers can break free and anticipate a pass. While Mehtab Hossain has the strength and the ability to disrupt an attack from the opposition. Lenny Rodrigues doesnai??i??t look like a player who could hold on to the ball for long enough, especially against physically stronger teams. Perhaps Wim Koevermans could do with a stronger player in midfield when playing against West Asian sides. Perhaps even a C.K. Vineeth could do the trick though he is not a natural central midfielder.
Ai??The Defense Needs A Total Overhaul
The whole of India is wondering why an in-form Arnab Mondal is being kept out of the side but the man whoai??i??s opinion matters the most thinks otherwise. Gourmangi Singh has probably earned a place in the team more on reputation than performance. After his high profile, reportedly 90 lacs a season move to big spenders Prayag United from Chuchill Brothers, Mangi has been a shadow of the player who once was the backbone of the Churchill Brothers defense. In fact this season, the much older Bello Rasaq has outshone the India defender in all respects and has been the standout performer for Prayag in the I-League. Raju Gaekwad too has lost his confidence after an indifferent season with Kingfisher East Bengal while Denzil Franco looks too one dimensional as a player.
The only player who right now deserves a place in defense is Syed Rahim Nabi, but he too has his defensive limitations. The second goal scored just after the re-start by Palestine was a clear defensive lapse with no proper coordination between the defenders, while the way Ashraf Alfawaghra rounded off Gourmangi Singh to score Palestineai??i??s fourth goal was embarrassing to say the least. Apart from left back-where Nabi is irreplaceable due to his goal scoring ability – the entire defense could do with some fresh faces. Arnab Mondal needs to be drafted into the side immediately while Nirmal Chhetri or even Naoba Singh could be tried out in Denzil Francoai??i??s place. Rowilson Rodrigues and China bound United Sikkim defender Sandesh Jhingan could also be options that Wim Koevermans could explore in the central defensive positions.

Ai??More Preparation Time Needed
FIFA rules stipulate that clubs should release their players for an international friendly at least three days before kick-off if the match happens to be in the same continent. While this would work well for established power houses like Germany, Italy, Brazil and Spain, the same may not hold true for weaker teams like India. Past history shows that the Blue Tigers have done well in tournaments where a long preparatory camp has been held for the players. This would enable players like Syed Rahim Nabi who plays as an attacking player for his club Mohun Bagan to switch to his defensive role in an India jersey. Also the players could get adjusted from the system that their club plays to the system adopted by Wim Koevermans.
For this to happen however there needs to be proper coordination between the National Teams Department and the I-League Department of the All India Football federation. In the past there have been instances when I-League teams have been forced to play without six or seven of their first team regulars on account of the National Team which makes the clubs apprehensive about releasing their players for the National team. There needs to be a concerted effort and coordination between the clubs and the Federation so that camps of longer duration can be held which would be beneficial to the National Team.
Lack of a Feeder system and a strong bench strength
The biggest problem facing the Indian team at the moment is its bench strength or the lack of it. For years now we are still struggling to find replacements for the Golden Generation that consisted of Carlton Chapman, Bhaichung Bhutia, Roberto Fernandes, Jo-Paul Ancheri, Bruno Coutinho and I.M. Vijayan. Coach Wim Koevermans has plenty of problems in defense but the lack of younger players may possibly be forcing him to rely on the out of form Gourmangi Singh and Raju Gaekwad. Though Alwyn George has come through the ranks and looks the next big thing in Indian football, other departments of the team are still not producing able replacements. Over-reliance on Sunil Chhetri has meant that he has to be fielded even when not match fit.
As India prepares for the crucial AFC Challenge Cup 2014 qualifiers Wim Koevermans knows that his task is cut out. Though the team may qualify easily for the AFC Challenge Cup next year, qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2015 would require Team India to win the AFC Challenge Cup in 2014. By the turn of next season there could be players who could fall out of favour with the National Team and Koevermans knows that he needs young players to form the nucleus of the side that would hopefully qualify and represent India at the AFC Asian Cup. While a change in tactic may not be required at this stage, unearthing new talent would be crucial to Indiaai??i??s chances of qualifying for their second successive AFC Asian Cup. Failure to do so would definitely mean a step backwards from the Bob Houghton era.
