A look into the difficult job that Jose Mourinho has at Chelsea FC of keeping his superstar player’s egos in check and keep the dressing room happy.
In football, as with life, you just canai??i??t keep everyone happy. If you want to keep everyone happy, then a football managerai??i??s job is not for you. But then, there are some people you HAVE to keep happy ai??i?? the owners, the fans and sometimes (for their own good) the media. A managerai??i??s job requires juggling all of these skills and then thereai??i??s the small matter of getting the tactics right or risk getting ridiculed. Life as a Premier League manager (or any other top league) isnai??i??t a piece of cake.
On the other hand, we have players who play week-in week-out in the top leagues in the world. They all have the physical prowess, the mental strength and the stamina to go through it all. In addition to this, the monetary rewards in football for everyone involved have increased tremendously in recent times. The money flow can only be a good thing for the players and the game. Or so you would think. With increased attention on footballersai??i?? every move, their physical appearances and of course the money, comes the ego. The ego that gets bigger with every ai???linkai??i?? with a big club, with every million-pound increase in transfer fees and with every good performance.
It is sometimes good to have an ego. It makes you believe that you should not be getting less than what you deserve. A good footballer with ego, however, is a volatile mixture. A player with a good attitude will take it upon himself to do better, while a player with ego will not be pleased with feedback and will take it as an insult. A superstar does not like to be benched. Not at Chelsea, not at Real Madrid, not even at Hull City. He expects to play every game, expects to garner praise from everyone and expects the manager treat him like the star that he is.
At a club like Chelsea ai??i?? with a billionaire owner who expects no less than a trophy every season, an ever-increasing fan base, and round-the-clock media attention and superstar players ai??i?? the problem with egos is a given. The way you handle the egos is what makes you a good manager.
So the question is, is Mourinho capable of handling the egos in the dressing room? The answer is a resounding yes. His career path is littered (and will be, in the future) with such instances and the way he has handled them (whether right or wrong) shows that he is capable of handling young superstars who get way too much money too early or the older heads who think they are irreplaceable.
Wherever Mourinho went, there were troublemakers present. Be it the likes of Balotelli at Inter Milan or the unexpected rebel in Casillas at Real Madrid. On the flip side however, there were players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic who heaped praises on Mourinho saying that he was like a father figure to everyone at the club and looked after everyoneai??i??s well being.
What is it about Mourinho that enables him to be able to handle superstars and their egos? One theory is that he is, for the most part, able to handle such situations because he has an ego himself. A huge one at that. Anyone who doubts this should go through his first interview in England. The famous ai???call me the Special Oneai??i??, interview. Having that attitude has helped him understand star players better. He knows that to be the best, you have to accept nothing but the best for yourself. He knows what young players need is nurturing and ensuring that when their time comes, they are able to shine. He knows that the senior members in the squad need to be treated with respect to ensure they are happy too.
With Mourinhoai??i??s squads, one thing is always certain ai??i?? the uncertainty of who is going to play. Whether in his first stint at Chelsea or at Inter or Real Madrid, he has never been afraid of rotating his squad. If that means leaving out star players, so be it. Like what happened with Casillas at Real Madrid. The latter had been Realai??i??s and Spainai??i??s number one goalkeeper for the longest time. Yet, an unfortunate hand injury and 12 weeks later, he is replaced as Realai??i??s number one ai???keeper by Diego Lopez. Casillas later revealed that he was left angry by the decision and shares cold vibes with Mourinho even now. This scenario might not explain how he ai???handledai??i?? the situation, but in the end he did manage to pull a rabbit out of the hat with the re-signing of Lopez.
Looking at the current Chelsea squad, they certainly will have problems with players not getting enough playing time. Mourinho has a certain system he likes to play with and if that means benching the clubai??i??s best player for the past two seasons, so be it. He has certain ai???favouritesai??i?? in all his teams right from his Porto days, whom he will nurture and guide to becoming better footballers. That is to say, once you are in his good books, there will be no looking back. Having said that, Mourinho does believe in giving everybody a chance to shine. If he wouldnai??i??t have that quality, we would have been robbed of the pleasure of watching Didier Drogba in action after his horrendous first season at Chelsea.
There are unhappy players in every team and with Chelsea it is no different. Players like Mata and Mikel have already voiced their displeasure of not having enough playing time this season. As the season passes, there will be more who will complain. Mourinho will obviously try to pacify them, but will ultimately play with the players he wants.
In the Roman Abramovich era, many before Mourinho have tried to avoid ego clashes. Andre Villas-Boas lost his job as Chelsea boss because he couldnai??i??t handle the egos in the team. Rafa Benitez wasnai??i??t really loved by the team either. With Mourinho, one thing is for sure ai??i?? every player will respect him whether they agree with him or not. He has built that reputation, that aura around him telling the players that he is the boss and theyai??i??ll have to do what is told.
Much like one of the greatest managers of our time ai??i?? Sir Alex Ferguson ai??i?? Mourinho has more haters than he has supporters. And much like Sir Alex, he isnai??i??t really bothered about the former. He gets his head down, does his job with passion and doesnai??i??t care what people think about him. If itai??i??s good for the team, he will do it. Maybe that is why he has gained respect of many of his peers. The fact that he wants to get the best out of all his players is probably why he is considered one of the best managers around.
