Chelsea will play host to Arsenal, as Arsene Wenger leads his team to Stamford Bridge for a massive London derby. Both teams are yearning for a victory, both managers are under pressure so to say, both clubs are eyeing the third place on the Premier League table. Ahead of the tasty encounter in West London, TheHardTackle is back with its next edition of Rival Rendezvous, wherein two of our veteran writers – Sounak Mukherjee (Arsenal) and Karan Yadav (Chelsea) – will clash head-on much before their respective teams actually take the field.
SM: In our last five meetings with your team at your place, we have faced four different managers if I am not wrong. How do you deal with this instability? As an Arsenal fan for 17 years, I don’t even know how it feels like. At what point do you think your owner can settle with one manager or are you guys going to live with this forever?
KY:Ai??At Chelsea, stability isn’t linked with a manager. There’s a Director of Football, Michael Emanelo, who is responsible for recruiting playing based on his own analysis and the reports that are submitted by his expansive network of scouts. So, even with the continuous merry-go-round of managers, the philosophy of building the right team for the future remains intact. The manager is seen as someone who is majorly responsible for what a team does on the field and not what happens behind the scenes. The club follows a model, wherein there are no substitutes for success. A manager is given a task; if he achieves the goals that are set for him, he stays, otherwise, he’s fired and a new man is brought in his place to match the ambition. Honestly, I’d rather settle for one manager and fewer trophies in the next five years, but the man at the helm, who’d put in his billions, feels otherwise and I can’t truly find too many faults with that ideology. He runs the club ruthlessly like a business and he yearns for results. You deliver everything or you go.
SM: How confident are you with this new experiment of David Luiz in the middle of the park? Has he ever played there before with Benfica? Is this a make-shift arrangement to keep the player happy as the Center-Back slot is quite populated?
KY:Ai??David Luiz is an exceptionally gifted footballer, who is technically capable of playing across the pitch in multiple roles. However, there are flaws in his game, which mostly emerge from between his ears. He is prone to lapses in concentration and in his endeavor to deliver the most exquisite of passes, loses the ball. In central defence, such errors were more likely to cost the team more, but even in midfield, although he loses the ball higher up the pitch, his decision making can hurt the team. Ergo, howsoever brilliant a football Luiz may be, unless he eliminates these flaws from his game, Chelsea will remain vulnerable in his position. Coming to your second question, the shift to midfield had more to do with the injury to Romeu and the unavailability of Mikel and Lampard than anything else and for now, this remains a make-shift arrangement, especially as Rafa himself is one.
SM: What has been the most significant change of this team under Rafa? Has it been for the good? In this short stint, has be instilled some belief into this team?
KY:Ai??While it’s too early to comment on the belief Rafa has instilled in this team as Chelsea remain as likely to lose a game as they were under Robbie, his most telling influence on the team has been on the defensive organization of things. His team is more balanced, as he avoids playing Mata, Hazard and Oscar together and prefers players such as Moses, Ramires to help the full-backs. Furthermore, the defence and double-pivot remain closer, thus eliminating the likelihood for opposition to play between the lines. In addition to that, he got Fernando Torres scoring again, while Chelsea have been more direct offensively.
SM: Honestly, what are the objectives for this season? Is the title a serious consideration? Are Chelsea in the same league as the Manchester Clubs right now?
KY:Ai??Ah, the title. No, I don’t think Chelsea can or will win the Premier League title this season. I expect the team to finish third this season and qualify for Champions League. On the trophy front, if the club can win one or more of the three competitions they are involved in – Europa League, Capital One Cup, FA Cup – I’ll be fairly pleased with the result.
SM: Finally, as a neutral, am a big fan of Frank Lampard, he has been the most consistent players for the Blues over the years. Do you think he will get what he deserves? Or is his career completely at the mercy of the owner for whom winning titles and making Chelsea a bigger brand are the only priorities?
KY:Ai?? I appreciate the fact that you acknowledge Lampard’s contribution to Chelsea over the past decade. He is certainly an unmatched role model, not because there haven’t been better players than him but because he overcame whatever technical limitations that he had as a player by virtue of his sheer grit and determination. He worked his *** off day in, day out since the start of his career and often was the first to arrive for training and the last to depart. So, it’s not a coincidence that Frank Lampard has become what he is today. Coming to his contract situation, Chelsea are trying to put in place a policy of offering only 1 year contract extensions to players who are over 30 years old. That was the case with Didier Drogba and is the case with Ashley Cole as well. Lampard wants a 2 year deal, but the club wants him to sign an year long contract. Lampard certainly still has a role to play at the club but it will be like say Ryan Giggs has at United – not a sure shot started, but good enough to fill in whenever required and guide the younger players along the way – so hopefully the situation will be resolved and the player and club will reach a consensus. Fans, of course, want him to stay. The club also wants him to stay but they are reluctant to break the rule they are so desperately trying to put in place.Anyway, I think I have more than answered my fair share of questions, and it’s time for a role reversal. KY: What is your opinion on Theo Walcottai??i??s new contract? From the outside, it appears to be a case of a player dictating terms to the club, holding Arsenal to ransom. Could Arsenal or Wenger perhaps tried the same with more talented players like Nasri, RvP and even Song, perhaps?
SM:Ai??It is absolutely amazing that Theo Walcott has committed himself to Arsenal Football Club. This is the first time in six years that the club has finally renewed a contract on the final year of the player’s contract getting over. It might have come at the cost of giving what Walcott needed, but so be it. Walcott is Arsenal’s leading goal-scorer and at 24, is going to be at the peak of his prowess. He, now, needs to show everybody why he is the highest paid player in the club. He needs to justify the faith his manager has shown in him.
KY: Looking at your current squad and the management (Arsene Wenger and Steve Bould) where should you realistically finish after 38 games and would you be happy with that? How long can Arsenal fans be content with the ai???qualified for Champions League trophyai????
SM:Ai??I am looking at a third place finish to be very honest. On my paper, this team looks as good as Chelsea and Spurs. We need to fight out the third and fourth spot with these two and Everton. I really don’t know the answer to the last part. For me, we have waited enough for the club to be debt-ridden from the stadium loan. It is time to come out of that and spend the money that is kept in a casket protected by crocodiles in the middle of some forest in the Amazon and the keys to that casket lies with Arsene Wenger.
SM:Ai??The best part of answering this is that Nasri, Clichy and Fabregas were never to be relied upon to stay back at the club. The first two did their bit at their time at Arsenal but wanted to move on because of whatever reasons they would like to quote. For Fabregas it was going back home and it was too irresistible a proposition. van Persie did what a spoiled kid does to his dad when he starts earning money, forgets about the past and leaves his dad forever.Ai??
Jack Wilshere fall in a completely different subset of contract renewing employees at the club. He is the most loyal of the lot and just players don’t come too often. He has been at the club from the age of 10 and has immense faith in the system. His being British makes it a bit easier to deal with as his family and friends stay quite close by. I am quite confident that Wilshere will finish at Arsenal.
KY: Last season was a rare blip as you lot came to the Bridge and stole the thunder. This season again our trials and tribulations at home have been well documented. How confident are you of a repeat, considering the hattrick man is no longer at Arsenal? Who should the Stamford Bridge faithful be wary of?
SM:Ai??I am not entirely sure as to why you will call last year’s win as a ‘rare blip’. We have won there in 2004 and 2008 too. Yes, we are without van Persie, but even without him we have scored goals with Giroud, Podolski and Theo contributing to the cause. Jack Wilshere is finally back to his best and if played at CAM, is quite capable of repeating his performance showed in the last game. He is a man possessed with determination right now. Chelsea really needs to be wary of him.
KY: What, or rather who, according to you at Chelsea can prove to be the defining factor at Stamford Bridge this weekend and how do you think Wenger will counter the threat? Which mini-battle on the pitch is capable enough to decide the war for one club or the other?
SM:Ai??Chelsea has an abundance of talent in the middle of the park and everyone of them can cause trouble to the Arsenal defense. Hazard, Oscar and Mata are terrific attacking midfielders, on their day, they are capable of causing havoc like they did against Aston Villa recently. If Arsene starts Cazorla on the wings again, he will keep Diaby and Coquellin in front of the defense. I think that will be very crucial as to how these two French players deal with the attacking threat at the Bridge. It looks to me a very tasty draw at this point of the season. May the best team win!
