There seems to be a lot of dust under the carpet if one were to look at Chelsea’s season. With the events that date from June, it seems fans will remember this campaign for all the wrong reasons. It started with Drogba’s departure and what followed was the sacking of the manager who had led the club to its first Champions League in the middle of November. If this wasn’t enough, what took the cake was the appointment of his replacement , a man who the Chelsea faithful love to hate. The Chelsea board have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Will Frank Lampard get a contract extension or does the club decide that his experience and presence in the team is surplus to requirements? Nobody knows. This is the same board that still pays Florent Malouda 100000 per week. The Chelsea board has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Pep Guardiola’ss move to Bayern Munich yesterday being the latest snub.
All these are problems that the club faced or will have to confront in the next few months. But there is one problem that hasn’t been given that much importance due to other important issues at the club. Fans have been talking about it , in whispers. But there will come a time when this problem will lead to a headache if not tackled soon.
In the year 2004 , a 22 year old man by the name of Petr Cech crossed the English channel from France to ply his trade in the English Premier League. No one knew who this 6.ft 5 inch goalkeeper was. Signed for a fee of 7m ( the highest the club had paid for a goalkeeper), Cech’s first impression was that he would be Chelsea’s understudy to Carlo Cudicini who had been first choice goalkeeper for the past 4 seasons. Cech made his start due to Cudicini suffering a elbow injury in the pre season. There has been no looking back for the goalkeeper from Czech Republic from that day onwards.
Fast forward 8 years and Cech is very much on course to become the all time appearance leader of the club. He has won everything he could have at club level . Three League titles, 4 FA CUPS and a Champions League medal in his trophy cabinet. Having been at the club for such a long time , Cech was part of Chelsea’s formidable spine that has been part of the clubs recent trophy laden period. With the trio of Drogba, Lampard and John Terry , Petr Cech’s form between the sticks has led to keepers of the likes of Cudicini , Hilario and Turnbull being resigned to the bench.
Many thought that the Czech was past his prime. Fans were worried that they might never get to see the Cech they saw before his horrific head injury in 2006. But displays in the club’s Champions League Campaign last season were a stern reminder to all those watching that one can never write off Petr Cech. If not the best , over the past 2 seasons Cech has been one of the world’s best goalkeepers in the modern game. And the best part is the fact that the man is just 30. Cech will enter what is to be considered the best years of a goalkeepers career. Chelsea fans have a lot to look forward to.
But Chelsea fans have another goalkeeper to look forward to , one that shows more promise than Cech showed when he was of the same age. And this is where the problem lies.
Thibaut Courtois was scouted by Michael Emenalo during his days with Belgian club Genk. The club won the league after 8 long years, Courtois was one reason why. The 17 year old ( at that time ) made 40 starts in their league campaign keeping 14 clean sheets. This proved to be more than enough for Chelsea who signed the player from the club in the summer of 2011 . Having such a player on the bench would prove wasteful for the player’s development and hence it was decided to send the young Belgian on loan. Spain would be the destination , Atletico Madrid the club.
Having spent just a year and a half at Atletico , Courtois tops the list when the top goalkeeping prospects in Europe are being spoken about. 23 clean sheets in 54 league games for a 20 year old is certainly no mean feet. In his inaugural season with the club , Courtois won the Europa League keeping 8 clean sheets in the tournament. It seemed to be the right move for him. He has also made his presence felt at the international stage having started all of Belguim’s qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. Such performances have caught the eye of every top European club. A possible replacement for Victor Valdes perhaps. And this is where the problem lies.
Do Chelsea sell him or keep him in their ranks till Cech decides to call it a day. The latter has another 5-6 years ahead of him and considering Courtois’ talent, a move from Atletico Madrid to the Chelsea bench surely doesn’t make any sense. Courtois will develop into one of the best goalkeepers in the next few years. What everyone wants to know is the destination. His contract with Chelsea runs till 2016 and with each passing season his parent club will face the dilemma of recalling him or sending him out on another loan. The club will have to come up with a solution which probably means saying goodbye to one of these two goalkeepers. At any club , keeping both keepers happy is extremely difficult. As things stand , sending the Belgian on another one year loan makes the most sense. But what after that? Having Coutois as your second choice is a big headache for Chelsea at the moment and they have to come up with a possible solution. Regardless of who makes way for whom, one thing is certain , Chelsea will be very much sorted in the goalkeeping department.
