As Chelsea narrowly lost the UEFA Super Cup on penalties, in what Bayern fans might call poetic justice for their loss in similar fashion to the Blues in the Champions League a little over a year ago, all eyes were on Jose Mourinho who offered his humblest take on the proceedings. Claiming the best team lost on the night, he might have come across as being uncharitable towards his old nemesis Pep Guardiola, but he may have had a point – Chelsea were down to 10 men for quite a long time, and were clearly playing with a handicap.
After the dust settles on this competition, attention will inevitably swing back towards Chelsea’s moves in the waning days of the transfer market. One of Jose Mourinho’s most telling acts was the fielding of a team minus any strikers against Manchester United. Short of flogging Torres in front of a capacity crowd, there was little more he could’ve done to express his displeasure at the Spaniard’s handling of things.
While Juan Mata seems to be receiving the short end of the stick, on a regular basis, Demba Ba too languishes on the sidelines. Last season, Ba proved he was a more potent option up front – and Benitez was glad to give him the light of day. Mourinho on the other hand seems to see strikers like Ba as, for want of a better word, scavengers. Demba Ba has a talent for poaching goals – the perfect foil to Chelsea’s midfield teeming with creativity. When the magicians fail to dazzle, Ba would save the day with a sleight of hand. A cheap parlor trick for when the heavy artillery fail.
Mourinho was never going to be comfortable with that approach. The tactician clearly prefers his strikers to be aggressive, grab-the-game-by-the-throat kind of players, who are unlikely to be ambiguous about their roles in the team. After Drogba left, it seemed Chelsea had finally done away with that obsession of his, and gone all in for the wiry, athletic Torres. As Torres failed, as did Ba, Chelsea were left looking at Romelu Lukaku as Drogba’s heir-apparent and their most potent striker.
His combination of youth and inexperience saw him fluff his shot against an imperious Manuel Neuer, handing the game and trophy to Guardiola’s Germans. Mourinho, while he will be certain to console the young Belgian, is also sure to have confirmed his private suspicions that Lukaku isn’t ready to be the tip of Chelsea’s spear just yet. Which is why, with Rooney effectively shutting the door on him, Mourinho turned to an old horse.
At 32, Samuel Eto’o is a veteran. Questions are bound to be asked as to why Drogba was not pursued more vigorously – since the Ivorian’s build and familiarity with the club more than make up for the additional couple of years. But Mourinho clearly trusts the Cameroonian and for good reason. Eto’o may not have a massive advantage in the air, or leave defenders counting their teeth after he clatters into them, but he is arguably more skillful and in his heyday had an enviable eye for goals.
Having spent his past several days effectively enjoying retirement at Anzhi, Samuel Eto’o will have little time to return to his former lofty standards. Eto’o may have been a behemoth 30-goal machine during his days at Barcelona, but comfortably made his transition to an Inter side where he shared the limelight with Milito to great effect. At Chelsea, however, Eto’o is likely to be Mourinho’s point man – Torres’ latest goal notwithstanding.
With Eto’o at the helm, Mourinho will likely rely on the embarrassment of riches he boasts in midfield to support the striker and maintain pressure. Unlike Torres whose first touch has been the bane of his recent existence, Eto’o is lethal. His speed, strength and skill-level may no longer be Barcelonaesque, but it’s worth noting that lethality is a frame of mind. Torres’ detractors will claim the Spaniard’s mind gave way just as his body did. Torres came to Chelsea on the back of a lackluster last few months at Liverpool, and crumbled under the pressure of an enormous price tag. Eto’o comes in for free and will relish the prospect of starting afresh and playing for a renowned man-manager in Jose Mourinho. The stage is set for a second shot at life, this time in the Premier League.
There’s just one sour note in this rising crescendo of anticipation. Eto’o who has never been known to mince words, once had some choice words for Chelsea. During his Barcelona days, and in the run up to an especially bitter encounter with the Blues, Eto’o said he’d rather sell groundnuts in his village than play for a “pathetic” team like Chelsea. So while it seems like a generous dose of humble pie being served for dessert at the Eto’o household, there’s also the opposite frame of reference to consider.
Chelsea’s fans are no strangers to a few figures who publicly proclaimed their uncharitable opinions of Chelsea, with varying degrees of venom. Rafa Benitez, who pretty much accused True Blues of being plastic flag-waving fans, eventually earned back some level of respect and gratitude from the partisan crowd at the Bridge for his managerial prowess. But that patching up did not come without its initial teething problems. Benitez was booed, heckled and left in no doubt that his predecessor was dearly loved.
Samuel Eto’o, of course, went further. Calling your future employers “pathetic” is unlikely to be viewed in a positive light, even in a club as forward-looking as Chelsea. While he’s likely to be afforded a hero’s welcome at The Bridge, it goes without saying his earlier remarks will remain in the back of most people’s heads. Eto’o will need to deliver the goods if he is to convince the fickle crowds that the past is to be forgotten once and for all.
It’s not an unlikely scenario.
Chelsea have forgiven another key figure who once said he wouldn’t prefer a club like Chelsea. Quite mild, but just as stinging back then. He’s now an icon, and has arguably shaped the club to an extent greater than anyone else, second only to Roman Abramovich.
