With his impressive physique and an ability that has many looking up to him as the next Drogba, it can be easy to forget Chelsea’s loaned star Romelu Lukaku is just 20 years old. Fortunately to make matters easier for us, Lukaku in all his glory decided to remind us all that age and wisdom are indeed directly correlated – by opening his mouth, and shooting it off to his content.
Lukaku stunned many optimistic Chelsea fans with a transfer deadline-day move to Everton, and has since then proceeded to give the world a glimpse into the precociously talented universe he hails from. Fair enough, you might say. After all, with Chelsea opting to go all out in midfield and operate just a sole striker up front, it was always going to be slim pickings for the young Belgian.
Lukaku then seemed to relish reminding Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho just what he was missing, as Chelsea’s frontline sputtered and only occasionally even flattered to deceive. Meanwhile Romelu was living it up in Everton, scoring 8 times and leaving everyone else wondering just how many he’d have scored if he had a stronger bunch of midfielders backing him.
Now, silence goes a long way in taking the higher road against your detractors – perceived or otherwise – but Lukaku wasn’t one to let bygones be bygones. After scoring an especially pleasing goal, he wondered aloud if Mourinho was watching him. The insinuation, laid bare for all to see, was that Mourinho had sent Lukaku packing, even as the young Belgian cried piteously holding onto the Chelsea manager’s ankles for dear life. He had us all fooled, it would seem now.
After stoking the angry embers of coal in Mourinho’s heart one time too many, by suggesting the Portuguese genius had shown scarce interest in keeping touch with him after his departure from Chelsea, Lukaku was served with as epic a response as any. If there were any concerns that age and Chelsea’s inability to set the league on fire, had had doused the venom that drips off of Mourinho’s tongue, it was soon put to rest.
Mourinho came out with a reponse that was brutal, pointed and left things to the public imagination. Making repeated references to Lukaku’s age, or lack of it, and implying that it brought with it a certain lack of maturity the wily Chelsea manager jabbed at Lukaku’s pretended victimhood.
“Romelu is a young boy who likes to speak,” said Mourinho. “The only thing he didnai??i??t say is why he went to Everton on loan. Thatai??i??s the only thing he never says. There are things in our lives that we have to keep private but one day he scored and said he hoped Jose was watching. ‘It was like saying: ai???Why did he let me go?ai???
Premise established, Mourinho dug in for the kill, “And thatai??i??s what Iai??i??m telling him now: ai???Tell the country why you left.ai??? When you enjoy to speak, speak everything. ‘Donai??i??t speak only half of it. Speak everything.”
Suddenly Lukaku as the wronged candidate in this saga wasn’t so easy to empathize with anymore. It soon emerged, perhaps from deep within Chelsea’s boardroom, that it was the young and restless Lukaku who had tabled a transfer request, just hours after playing the villain’s role in Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup loss to Bayern Munich by missing the telling penalty shot.
The tabloids had a field day with it; but in their eagerness to run with the story they missed one vital aspect. It showed just how in-sync the powers that be at Chelsea, truly are. The run of poor results have seemingly done nothing to erode their trust in Jose Mourinho. When his predecessors (or successors, you might say) found themselves in similar positions in the league, they found little to no backing from Abramovich’s guard. That only sparked their paranoia to even greater extents, as they nervously glanced over their shoulders waiting for that fateful plunge of the knife.
Mourinho’s taunt towards Lukaku, followed by the leak in the press about what really happened, shows that the club remains firmly in the Mourinho camp. It’s only a matter of time before Lukaku eats humble pie, and makes an offering of peace to his former boss. If there’s a silver lining in all of this, it’s that Chelsea and Mourinho haven’t given any indication of an intent to shut the door on Lukaku.
Despite their coming out swinging at him and with all guns blazing, the club’s controllers know they have precious little left in the striker department to make Lukaku merely an afterthought. The famed Chelsea disdain for young talent is only a smokescreen, after all.
For all of the backing Mourinho has presumably received in this saga, there is one sticking point. Lukaku may have had his mask of innocence ripped off to reveal the charlatan behind it, but it doesn’t make him any less wronged a figure. When Lukaku handed in a transfer request, he didn’t do it with greener pastures in mind. He did it with that sinking feeling of despondency that comes with knowing your club had signed another striker pushing him from 3rd-choice frontman to a never-again-see-the-daylights 4th choice striker.
Can Lukaku be blamed for wanting to make a big enough impression this season to feature in the Belgian squad for the World Cup? The Belgians are likely to be this tournament’s dark horses, and promise to put together an exciting run. Rather than wait another 4 years for his chance, it’s understandable Lukaku would have put all his eggs in one basket – that of playing regularly for his team.
By signing washed-up, trouble-making, injury-prone Eto’o, Chelsea just told Lukaku (rather unpleasantly) where he could go. He picked Everton instead, and looks set to make a 20-goal haul. Jose Mourinho may have won this battle, one that was thrust upon him. But deep down there’s a sinking feeling that Lukaku may have been lost forever.
One spectacular World Cup campaign, and Lukaku may leave Chelsea again. Not in search of daylight, but in search of glory.
