A valiant effort from the newly promoted side Cardiff City saw them defeat Manchester City at home with Frazier Campbell making his mark with a brace.
After making a fine start to their campaign against Newcastle United, Manchester City suffered the first loss of their season against the newly promoted side Cardiff City. After a disappointing first half, the game broke into life when Edin Dzeko gave City the lead in theAi?? 52nd minute of the match with a wonderful finish from outside the box. But Cardiff hit back immediately as Aron Gunnarsson levelled the score just four minutes after conceding the opening goal.
From that point it went from bad to worse for City as they conceded two goals from corners ai??i?? although Joe Hart has to take the blame for Cardiffai??i??s second goal as the England international failed miserably with his attempt to punch the ball and Fraizer Campbell was at hand to give them the lead. Campbell completed his brace just eight minutes later from another corner, this time with a towering jump above Zabaleta. City did score a second with substitute Negredo getting on the score sheet, but it was too little too late. It has to go down as one of the most memorable victories for Cardiff in recent times, as they showed why they are considered favourites to survive relegation this season among the three newly promoted clubs.
Manuel Pellegrini was disappointed with the fact that his team conceded two goals from set-pieces, although he refuse to blame Joe Hart for his mistake in the second goal.
“Defending set pieces is a duty for the whole team, not just the goalkeeper or the defenders. It doesn’t matter who is guilty. In the second half we improved but after we scored they scored from two corners and that decided the game.
“Set pieces are very important and we try to work at it. They did better than our defending and scored two goals from corners. The worst thing is that we got ahead. After we scored I thought it would be easier but two corners decided the game.” ai??i?? Pellegrini said.
He also pointed out how hard it was for his team to break down a Cardiff side who defended with 10-men behind the ball.
“I don’t think our defence cost us today. There was no problem in central defence. When we scored the first goal I thought it could be easy for us because we were playing a team that had 10 players in their box.” ai??i?? The Manchester City manager added.
