Borussia MAi??nchengladbach have confirmed that Mike Hanke, whose contract expires this season, won’t be offered a contract extension.
Mike Hanke, the man who is perhaps more famous for being allergic to grass than his goal scoring abilities, has made only eight starts in the Bundesliga this season. His last last goal for the club came in December last year, against Mainz; it was the second of the two goals he has scored so far this season.
Mike Hanke’s contract with Borussia MAi??nchengladbach will not be renewed and the German international will be leaving Borussia Park in the summer. Sporting director Max Eberl had shown no inclination towards extending Hanke’s contract as late as February and BILD reports that the latest contract that was offered to Hanke has been withdrawn.
“I’m very disappointed. Borussia MAi??nchengladbach is very close to my heart and I would have signed a contract willingly.” – Hanke said.
MAi??nchengladbach sporting director,Ai??Max Eberl,Ai??understands Hanke’s disappointment, but he has pointed out that the decision was taken considering the club’s future plans.
“In September, we delivered with conviction an offer, but a new development has occurred, and now we want to take a different path than we had planned in September. It was not a decision made overnight, was a long process. We have some ideas and we considered how we aim to focus in future and have taken this decision after a lot of consideration, it is understandable that Mike is disappointed.” – Eberl was quoted in press.
With Igor de Camargo already gone, Gladbach might decide that the duo of Luuk de Jong and Peniel Mlapa will be enough to take the club forward next season. Patrick Herrmann’s ability to deputize in attack could also mean that they will not look for any reinforcements this summer and rather look to promote a youngster or two.
Other clubs in the Bundesliga will look to pounce on this opportunity to grab Hanke on a free transfer. Although he may not be the most lethal scorer across Germany, he will provide clubs with adequate cover and variety when needed. The likes of Stuttgart, Wolfsburg and possibly even Borussia Dortmund are probable suitors for Hanke.
