Arsenal FC are expected to have a busy summer as Arsene Wenger is no longer bounded by financial restrictions and strict wage structure. We take a look at what the Gunners need to strengthen their squad and who their possible targets are.
Arsenal finished the season on a roll. The Gunners took 39 out of the 48 points available in their last 16 matches in the league and eventually finished fourth – just five points behind second placed Manchester City ai??i?? which at a point looked impossible. This brilliant run of form at the end can be attributed to a lot things ai??i?? better defensive organisation with Koscielny and Martesacker forming a wonderful partnership at the back, the team showing a strong character, Rosickyai??i??s return to the team, Aaron Ramseyai??i??s return to form and Arsenal were also partially helped by the fact that they had a relatively easier run of fixtures towards the end compared to their rivals.
Despite the fact that Arsenal qualified for the Champions League once again, the most disheartening aspect from last season was their performances against the top seven sides in the league. Arsene Wengerai??i??s men managed to take just 11 points from a possible 36 against the likes of Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool. But above those stats, perhaps the most important thing was Arsenal retaining their top-four status, which has now provided them with the base to build for next season.
Champions League qualification was crucial, not only financially, but also because it is necessary in order to attract big names in the transfer market. Transfer windows in the recent past havenai??i??t always provided the most pleasant of experiences for Arsenal fans. Nearly every summer started with massive build-up and plethora of players being linked to the club, but only few arrive and most dishearteningly a recent trend has seen the club lose more big names in the market than they have managed to sign them.
But things are about to change this season, at least that is what it looks like from the outset. No big name is expected to leave the club in the summer; instead the club is expected to make two or three important signings. The financial bindings are finally off and Arsene Wenger has been provided (reportedly) with a big transfer budget of A?70million by the board. Arsenalai??i??s biggest hindrance in signing big names have not only been their unwillingness to spend over the top (which meant that they were out-bidden by most of the clubs), but also the fact that the rigid wage structure at the Emirates meant they were unable to offer the salaries their rivals were offering the players. But things are about to change this summer ai??i?? at least that is what Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis has promised. Increase in revenue, better sponsorship deals and clearance of debts now means that Arsenal can afford a player like Wayne Rooney with wage of A?200,000 a week. Arsenal have also started a massive clearing of deadwood from the dressing room, which will free up the wage bill significantly.
So with flexible wage structure and money to spend, this will be the one of most crucial transfer windows for Arsene Wenger in his Arsenal career. But all said and done, the money also needs to be invested cleverly, as Arsene Wenger said, even though they are in a better position financially, Arsenal cannot afford to make a mistake in the transfer market ai??i?? the likes the Chelsea and Manchester City can. So here is a look at the parts of the squad that need strengthening first and foremost.
Defensive Midfielder
Although Mikel Arteta has done an admirable job in that role, it is not a natural position for him – In fact playing Arteta in that role has restricted his influence a lot. Arsenal will see the best of Arteta if he is freed off his defensive responsibilities (or at least some of it) and is played alongside a proper holding midfielder.
Arsenalai??i??s defence has come under a lot of criticism during the first half of the season and although it was mostly down to lack of organisation at the back, the lack of defensive cover from the midfield was a prime reason as well ai??i?? the back were left exposed far too often. Wilshere, Diaby and Ramsey can partner Arteta, but all three of them are more suited to a box-to-box role than the role of a holding midfielder. Francis Coquelin is an option, but Arsenal needs a more experienced head in that role. EmmanuelAi??Frimpongai??i??s development has also stagnated due to injury and his future at the Emirates is in doubt. A proper defensive midfielder is perhaps the most urgent requirement in the squad and here are the possible options Arsene Wenger can look at this summer.
Lars Bender
The 24-year-old German has been fantastic for Bayer Leverkusen for the past few seasons and has already earned 11 caps for his national team. He is brilliant defensively and will be able to provide the protection to the back four alongside Arteta. Bender averages 4.5 tackles and 2.5 interceptions per game in Bundesliga and been a key figure in the Leverkusen side that finished third last season.
Arsenal have been linked with him recently, although he comes with a hefty price-tag of A?20m. Interestingly, his brother Sven Bender has also been linked with the Gunners, but Lars is certainly the better option of the two.Ai?? But presently a deal to sign him looks unlikely as Leverkusen have qualified for the Champions League and it will be hard to convince them into selling their prized asset.
Maxime Gonalons
Reports suggested that Arsenal were preparing a A?10 million move for the 24-year-old Lyon midfielder, but the French club have crushed all rumours by releasing a statement that he will not be sold this summer. But on the hindsight it could also be a strategy to increase the valuation of the player.
Gonalons has progressed through the Lyon youth academy and is currently the club captain after being handed over the arm-band in January. He is highly rated back in France and made his debut for the French senior team back in 2011. At this moment, he looks to be the most likely player to arrive at the Emirates in this list and he would be a fine addition. Despite his age, he has a lot of experience and has good leadership skills as well. He averages 4 tackles per game and has made 109 interceptions in the league last season.
Etienne Capoue
The 24-year-old has been on Arsenalai??i??s radar for a long time now and Toulouse Olivier Sadran has indicated that the defensive midfielder can leave at the right price. Capoue is a versatile footballer, who can play both as a holding midfielder and as a center back. He is also capable of doing all the dirty works in the midfield and adds a bit of creativity when needed. The French international has also expressed his desire to leave the club and play in ai???bigger competitionsai??i??.
Capoue is a very level-headed footballer and will also add a lot of physicality to the midfield. He is well built and is naturally athletic. But Arsenal will face competitions from arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur and PSG in this race to secure the signature of the midfielder. It will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger can use his French connection to secure this deal and it is something which looks very likely at the moment.
The other names that have been linked with the Gunners are that of Morgan Schneiderlin, Sven Bender and Victor Wanyama. While Schneiderlin has had a very good season at Southampton, he is mostly likely to stay at the club next season. It will also be very hard to convince Dortmund to let go of Sven Bender as they have already lost some key players this summer ai??i?? moreover his brother (Lars) is a better defensive midfielder. Arsenalai??i??s interest in Victor Wanyama seems to have faded recently and the midfielder is set to move elsewhere.
Striker
The biggest question that Arsenal faced at the start of last season was ai??i?? who will replace the goals of Robin van Persie? The answer that Arsenal provided in the end was ai??i?? everyone; literally. Arsenal scored 74 goals in the 2011-12 season with van Persie scoring 30 among those and last season the Gunners scored 72 goals with Theo Walcott being the highest scorer with 14 goals. Four Arsenal players scored more than 10 goals in the league last season (Walcott, Cazorla, Giroud and Podolski) and that is how Arsenal still managed to score 72 goals with Robin van Persie in the side. The positive part of this achievement was the fact that the team was no longer dependent on just one player to find the back of the net, but the worrying bit is that Arsenal lack a 25-goals-striker in their squad presently.
While Giroud has done well in his first season at the club and has at times been unfairly criticized by the fans ai??i?? it is perhaps apparent that he is not the type of striker who can score 25-30 goals in season for the club and that is something every side which wants to challenge for titles needs ai??i?? a goal machine upfront. Giroud works hard, helps out defensively, builds up attack, but his finishing, at times, leaves a lot of be desired. It was also established that Walcott wonai??i??t be converted into a striker permanently, and perhaps even the England international has understood his limitations in that role. So the Gunners need to add more firepower upfront, especially with Giroud being the only natural striker remaining in the squad (both Marouane Chamakh and Bendtner are about to leave the club). Arsenal have signed French U-20 international Yaya Sanogo, but he is someone for the future.
Here are the names that are likely to arrive at the Emirates next season.
Gonzalo Higuain
The deal is near completion and the Argentine international is expected to arrive at the club in the next few days. He is set to be the first big name signing this season and according to reports Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with the player. The transfer fee involved in this deal is believed to be A?22 Million, as the Gunners warded off competition from Juventus. Arsenal officials are believed to be on their way to Madrid to complete this deal.
The 25-year-old will be a superb addition and will also send out a sign of intent to Arsenalai??i??s rivals in the transfer market. It is an indication that the club is no longer hesitant in spending the cash when required. Higuain is still young and already has massive experience both at the International stage and in European football. He will add a new dimension to the Arsenal attack, which at times looked a bit toothless upfront towards the end.
Wayne Rooney
He is perhaps the biggest name that has been linked with the Gunners in recent times. Both Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis have indicated their interest in Rooney, who faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after expressing his desire to leave the club. Rooney-rumours have received mixed reactions from the Arsenal fans ai??i?? while some would happily welcome him to the Emirates, others are skeptical about him due to his link with United and due to some of the comments he made about the club in the past. But despite his antics, Rooney remains a world-class footballer ai??i?? there is no two ways about it.
Recent rumours suggested that after securing Higuain, Arsenalai??i??s next target is the Manchester United forward. The Gunners can afford his wage and it is believed that they are prepared to offer him a A?175,000 a week contract. But United are yet to receive any concrete offers from Arsenal as this deal hangs in the balance.
Stevan Jovetic
Arsenalai??i??s interest in him seemed to have cooled down significantly after Higuain deal was rumoured. Jovetic it seems is more eager to join Juventus, although Arsenal have the capability to out-bid the Italian champions. But it seems Wenger is now looking at other options and Jovetic is unlikely to arrive at the Emirates as of now.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, the highly rated 18-year-old Partizan striker has also been believed to be close to joining the English club, although he again is someone for the future and is unlikely to get first team action immediately.
Luxury
Marouane Fellaini ai??i?? Initially it was rumoured that Arsenal have activated the release clause in Fellainiai??i??s contract with a A?22 Million bid for the Everton midfielder, but these talks have cooled down in recent times. There were question marks about this deal had it gone through (or if it goes through). Will Fellaini fit into the footballing ethos of Arsenal as the Gunners are unlikely to play the style of football in which he is most effective? Whom will he replace in the starting eleven? He is not a proper defensive midfielder that Arsenal are looking for, so he is unlikely to play alongside Arteta. Fellaini seemed most effective when playing in the hole behind a striker as he can win aerial balls and set up play, but he surely canai??i??t replace Cazorla, Wilshere or Rosicky in that role. So if Arsenalai??i??s interest has cooled down, they might have dodged a bullet.
Cesc Fabregas ai??i?? Only the most optimistic of Arsenal fans would have fallen for these rumours, which seemed to have been initiated by Manchester Unitedai??i??s reported interest in the Spanish midfielder and Arsenal having a ai???first-refusalai??i?? clause in his contract. But the Spaniard has quickly moved to dismiss claims of him being unsettled at Barcelona and wanting a move back to the Premier League.
Clement GrenierAi??– The 22-year-old is being touted as the next best thing to have come out of the Lyon youth academy. He has been compared with the likes of Kaka and Juninho (due to his amazing ability from free kicks). Arsenal have scouted him since the 2008, when he was playing for the French U-18 squad and now he has already made his debut for the senior team. The versatile attacking midfielder has already hinted at the possibility of joining Arsenal, although Lyon will try their best to hold on to their prized asset. This deal looks very likely at the moment though and Grenier could be the latest addition to the ever growing pool of talented attacking midfielders at the club. But is likely to be on for the future as he is too inexperienced at the moment to get into the first team ahead of the likes of Cazorla, Rosicky or Wilshere.
Arsenal already have a plethora of attacking midfielders and any more addition in that part of the squad would be a luxury. Arsenalai??i??s prime targets are signing a striker (which they are close to accomplishing) and a defensive midfielder. Now new addition in the defence is required unless there is a departure ai??i?? which looks unlikely since the future of Koscielny and Vermaelen seemed to have been secured. Sagna is the only possible big name departure that can take place this summer, although Arsenal are unlikely to bring in a new right-back even if that materializes as Jenkinson and Bellerin are expected to enjoy more first team action next season.
Overall, this promises to be the most transfer window for the Gooners in recent times and one that could also significantly shape the future of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.
