The Champions League knockout stages usually promises quite a few interesting match-ups but this year the casual football fan has been spoiled rotten. In 2012/13, Europeai??i??s marquee club football competition features three fixtures that would make for great, if not spectacular semi-finals or finals – at the first K.O. round already. Last week, the reigning Spanish champions Real Madrid hosted perennial trophy contenders Manchester United in a thrilling 1-1 draw – a result that belies the open nature of the match. On any other night it wouldai??i??ve probably ended in a legendary slugfest, however, the custodians of both clubs had other plans.
When one thinks of the Champions League itai??i??s the traditional superpowers of European football that come into mind: AC Milan, Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Manchester United or Real Madrid amongst others.
Though a semi-final sans any of the aforementioned doesnai??i??t make the Champions League a weaker competition, it does, however, make it a slightly less engaging affair. With all due respect to Schalke 04, Paris Saint-Germain, Malaga or Porto, these sides – though of undoubted quality ai??i?? donai??i??t necessarily inspire the imagination, let alone epic European Champions League nights that have become the hallmark of the competition.
Unfortunately, some of the 2012/13 Champions League campaignai??i??s most enchanting matches will be contested in the first knockout round. As mentioned earlier Real Madrid have already played the first leg of their double-header against Manchester United, while Arsenal will welcome Bayern Munich later on this evening. Also, Milan will square off against runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona. These are the kind of fixtures that everyone is looking forward to. Itai??i??s a bittersweet experience nonetheless. Three of the most illustrious clubs in Europe will not progress to the next round of the Champions League, in the process taking away some of the prestige associated with the tournament.
Everybody loves the story of an underdog; nevertheless one also wants something historic and traditional too.
With the conclusion of the 2nd leg of their tie at the Camp Nou, Milan and Barcelona will have faced one another six times over the last 18 months ai??i?? though never later than the quarter-finals. Itai??i??s something of a crime since this particular pairing makes for interesting matches, if not unfinished business on some level.
Barcelona have only lost one final in the Champions League era, incidentally to Milan in 1993/94. Even worse, itai??i??s Johann Cruyffai??i??s legendary Dream Team that suffered a defeat to an equally competitive Milan side. Ask any Blaugrana supporter and theyai??i??ll admit that itai??i??s still a thorn in their side.
Over the last couple of years the current Barcelona team, revolving around Lionel Messi has emerged as the most recent addition to be elevated onto the pantheon of legendary sides. Some are even willing to brand the current Blaugrana set-up the greatest team in the history of football.
At the other end of the spectrum are Serie A outfit Milan who are amidst a rebuilding phase after an unprecedented mass exodus of key players in the summer of 2012. Still, Milanai??i??s qualification for the knockout round has its merits. Though the Silvio Berlusconi-owned club didnai??i??t face any of Europeai??i??s genuine heavyweights at the group stage, their bracket was easily one of the more tricky ones (Zenit St. Petersburg, Malaga and Anderlecht). Milanai??i??s feat becomes even more impressive when one considers that the Rossoneri had to adjust to a life without the ever-reliable spine of Thiago Silva, Alessandro Nesta and Clarence Seedorf amongst others.
Though the ai???oldai??i?? Milan side was on the wrong side of 30, it had experience and European pedigree in spades. This new-look Milan team has neither, making their recent turnaround in Italy and abroad remarkable to say the least.
At the heart of Milanai??i??s resurgence is 20-year-old Stephan El Shaarawy, who almost instantly filled the very large boots left behind by the talismanic Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Italian international with Egyptian roots is the primary reason why Milan are still in contention for a place at next seasonai??i??s Champions League tournament. Without his goals, the Rossoneri would probably linger in the lower regions of Serie A.
Nonetheless, requiring a player (a 20-year-old one at that) to carry a team singlehandedly is an outrageous demand ai??i?? even if heai??i??s as wonderfully gifted as El Shaarawy. Since Christmas however, the goals have dried up for the youngster. The last time El Shaarawy scored a goal has been in a Serie A fixture against Atalanta at the end of January. Though Milan have since acquired enfant terrible Mario Balotelli to share the goal-scoring duties with El Shaarawy, heai??i??s ineligible for the Champions League – leaving Massimiliano Allegri with quite a selection headache.
On Wednesday evening, the Serie A outfit will play against a rampant Barcelona side who have all but secured another domestic title ai??i?? by mid-February no less. Whereas El Shaarawy has hit something of a rough patch (mixed with recent injury troubles), his opposite number Lionel Messi, is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The little Argentine has scored a ridiculous 48 goals in 38 games and created a further 15 for his teammates. After 24 rounds of domestic football he has only failed to score in four fixtures. As a matter of fact, La Pulga hasnai??i??t stopped scoring domestically since 11/11/2012. To say heai??i??s in good form is a huge understatement.
If Lionel Messi was the only concern Milan had to contest, with it would a more evenly balanced tie. However, though Messiai??i??s fellow forwards are all misfiring at present, Barcelonaai??i??s midfield is on form, with Andres Iniesta performing at his brilliant best ai??i?? even without his partner-in-crime Xavi.
El Illusionista, as he is affectionately called, is unplayable when on form. His recent outings in a Barcelona jersey suggest as much. This time last year, Cesc Fabregas disappeared into the wilderness of indifferent form after a sparkling start into his debut season with Barcelona. In his sophomore year, he appears to have become much more consistent with his performances, scoring and creating goals at a remarkable rate. Due to the options available, playing without Xavi is much more manageable these days.
Nevertheless, for all of Lionel Messiai??i??s record-breaking exploits in front of goal, Barcelonaai??i??s embarrassment of riches in midfield, the Blaugranaai??i??s defense is leaking goals still. Their two Copa Del Rey games against CA?rdoba FC notwithstanding, Barcelona havenai??i??t kept a clean sheet since the El derbi Barceloni on 06/01/2013. Itai??i??s not the quality of the oppositionsai??i?? attacking prowess thatai??i??s causing Barcelonaai??i??s backline to falter, but the defense itself. Though Tito Vilanovaai??i??s Barcelona side scores goals by the truckload, they are also giving away rather cheap goals on a regular basis. From bottom feeders Deportivo La Coruna to goal-shy CA Osasuna ai??i?? during the course of 90 minutes plus overtime any side is invited, almost prompted, to take advantage of Barcelonaai??i??s wobbly defense.
Itai??i??s almost as if solid defending is beneath Carles Puyol & co. no matter the pairing at the heart of defence. Whether it is the first-choice tandem of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, or one of the two plus Javier Mascherano ai??i?? the end result is always the same, Barcelona will concede at least one goal.
Rumor has it that Tito Vilanova has made the acquisition of a proven (read: real) center-back in the summer a top priority. Itai??i??s quite obvious that signing Alexandre Song has been a mistake from the word go. Though he has featured in a respectable 21 fixtures in all competitions, he made the bulk of his appearances through November ai??i??12. Since then he has only started in two games that were not Copa Del Rey ties. For the time being, Barcelonaai??i??s woes at back will still persist as Song isnai??i??t the 2-in-1 solution the Blaugrana hoped he would be. Yet another classic example for self-inflicted wounds made in Barcelona.
Barcelona enter the tie as the clear favorites but their suspect defense along with Milanai??i??s newfound resilience and industry should make this match a more even contest. For one reason or another itai??i??s less David vs. Goliath but perhaps one more special European night to add to the folklore of the competition ai??i?? though contested way too soon.
