Spanish La Liga – Round 22 Review: Barcelona and Real Get Narrow Wins, Zaragoza Headed for Relegation

Real Madrid got a crucial 1-0 win at Getafe, with the solitary goal being scored by Sergio Ramos, and retained their 7-point lead over last season champions FC Barcelona. The capital club have now won 16 of their past 17 matches (with the only exception being El ClA?sico at the Santiago Bernabeu) and are clearly in the pole position to win the league this time around.

Meanwhile, a very depleted Barcelona side (with only 14 first team players available) had to call some of their youth players, namely Tello and Jonathan dos Santos, to start against Real Sociedad and they got a 2-1 win. Ai??Tello and Lionel Messi scored for Barcelona, while Carlos Vela got one back for Real Sociedad. The game was marked by Sergio Busquets’s great injury scare, but after the official diagnosis, it turns out not to be as serious as initially expected.

Valencia have continued their relatively poor run of form with a 0-0 draw at El CaldAi??ron against AtlAi??tico, but they are still comfortably in third place. AtlAi??tico, on the other hand, haven’t yet lost under Simeone and look like they could challenge for a top 4 finish.

Although they drew against Racing Santander at home and haven’t yet won a match this year in the league, Levante still hold on to fourth place, now with the same points as Espanyol. The latter and Athletic Bilbao played an incredibly exciting match at San MamAi??s, with 3-3 the final score.

At the bottom, Zaragoza played an absolute final at home against Rayo Vallecano. Having lost 2-1, they are now 10 points away from safety, a gap that might very well prove too big to overcome, especially given how badly Zaragoza have been playing. In their first game after the sacking of the charismatic Manolo Preciado, Sporting Gijon got a 1-1 home draw against Osasuna and they’re now three points away from safety. Mallorca have continued their recent improvement with a 1-0 home win over Betis.

Finally, Sevilla lost 2-1 at home against Ai??aAi??resurgentAi??Villareal. The Yellow Submarines have got their first away win of the season and can finally breath, while Sevilla continued their slump and are now 11th in the league, with coach Marcelino under intense scrutiny from the fans.
