On Wednesday night Napoli will be playing Chelsea in the Champions League. The southern Italians have a good chance of progressing after a 3-1 win in the first game at home at Stadio San Paolo, even if they might want to kick themselves over the fact that it could easily have been a 5-1 victory instead. Now all that Chelsea need to go through the quarter finals is a home 2-0 win. While this is not unlikely by any standards, Napoli do have some good weapons for such a situation. They have the chance to stand back and soak up pressure, all the while threatening Chelsea with their famous and lethal counter attacks. One thing however is the counter attacks themselves, another, and easily overlooked, thing, is the reasons why Napoli get so many of them. In this article we will take a look at some of these reasons.
For a counter attack to take off you obviously need to win the ball ai??i?? you will not get any chances just by soaking up pressure in itself. Walter coach Mazzarri’s men have basically have two modes when defending. Either they defend deeply in the aim to kick the ball away or they defend deeply with the aim of starting a quick counter. Once in a rare moon they pile pressure higher on the pitch, but mostly they are content to retreat and establish a five man defense with the wingers acting as defenders.
A lot of people watching Napoli rarely, like most English commentators, are let to believe that Napoli’s lack of ball possession is a sign of weakness. That their seemingly aimless kicking away is a sign of a team breaking down under pressure. What these people miss is that this situation appears in almost all Napoli’s matches, except against the smallest of teams who themselves defend very deep all the time.
The idea behind these periods of kicking away is to allow the attackers and midfielders to catch their breath. For five to ten minutes it is mostly perfectly okay to let the opponents have the ball and via a compact defense force them to make early crosses into the area where captain Paolo Cannavaro is extremely efficient in heading the ball away.
The reason for the need of ai???in gameai??? rest for the attackers is that they, Lavezzi and Cavani, at other times in the game play a very important role in the defense. Not only are they the people who are meant to end the counter attacks with a shot on goal, they are also the ones who are meant to stress the opponents’ defenders and defensive midfielders to make errors. Sometimes these errors are very visible, as a defender losing the ball outright to one of Napoli’s front men, but most often it is simply a bad pass or a risky dribble.
When Napoli is defending with the focus of getting a quick counter you will see both Cavani and Lavezzi work bone hard to stress the opponents in their build ups. An extremely talented attacker like Zlatan Ibrahimovic would not work in Mazzarri’s system, which demands a lot of work without the ball from the strikers. The attackers as the first line of defense is imperative to Napoli’s success, and for followers of Italian football the view of an ever running Lavezzi and a Cavani defending at his own corner flag has become old news. Via this hard work they make sure that the opponents make mistakes, not only preparing the ground for a counter attack, but also generally making the life mush easier for Campagnaro, Cannavaro, and Aronica in the back line.

One of the most important skills for an attacker in Napoli is to be able to take part in this pressing. Lavezzi might be scoring some more goals at the moment, but he has always been a success in Mazzarri’s system, despite his lack of goals, because he fills the pressing role so well. When the winter signing Eduardo Vargas tried to do the same in his debut against Cesena in the Coppa Italia he tackled the ball directly onto the feet of a Cesena player who then scored.
People criticized Vargas but in reality he was just trying to fill the role that Mazzarri has no doubt asked him to fill. The hard thing however is to know, and feel, when it is the right time to do so. It’s very important that the team work together in the pressing and new players have to learn the when it is the right thing to do and when it is the right thing to lull the opponents and tv-commentators alike into the believe that Napoli is fatally wounded.
