Milan, Juventus Favorites At Home As Inter Face A Tricky Tie – Serie A Round 36 Preview

There is still all to play for in Serie A as teams gear up for the 36th round of games that is scheduled over the midweek. The title race is still open and so is the race for the coveted last Champions League spot. Only one team has already been relegated to the lower division for the next season, while there are several whoai??i??d leave no stone unturned during these three games to continue playing in the top division next year.

TheHardTackle briefly previews all the games during the midweek in a crisp manner with all the relevant information and predictions.

CHIEVO VERONA

V

AS ROMA

Stadio Marc’ Antonio Bentegodi, Verona

.

Chievo have always been a tough nut to crack and things will not get easier for Roma as they visit a stadium, where the pitch obstructs the passing game Luis Enrique prefers his side to play. Roma have been able to collect only a single point from their last three league games and with others in the race for Champions League spot having considerably overtaken them, there is no more ground to lose for the visitors. Chievo have had a more than a decent season for their merit and will fancy a top half finish producing some positive results towards the end of the season. They are not having the best run of form of late but given Romaai??i??s unpredictability and susceptibility against the mid-table teams, Chievo are more than with a chance to get something out of this game.

With a string of poor results on the back of their mind and the pressure to deliver to stay in contention for the European spot, Roma may once again crumble and drop points jeopardising Luis Enriqueai??i??s position as the coach.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Chievo 1-1 Roma

.

NAPOLI

V

PALERMO

Stadio San Paolo, Naples

Tuesday, May 1, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

.

This is one of the more exciting games from the midweek action. Napoli, after having a long period of dismal football post their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Chelsea, have got things back in shape just when it mattered the most. They are now reckoned as favourites to claim the third position in the table and a chance to contest for the group stages in the Champions League. This is the trickiest of the three games remaining for Napoli and a win here should boost their confidence enough to produce the required results in the following games against Bologna and Siena.

Palermo have been a highly unorganized side on the road and have registered only one victory while travelling. Theyai??i??ve been incurred nine losses away from home which is a piece of stat that might add to Walter Mazzariai??i??s confidence ahead of this tie. Palermoai??i??s season is as good as over and this is a good time to experiment with some fresh tactics as thereai??i??s not much to lose on their part. Napoli, on the other hand, have all to play for and will go with the tried and tested methods. Edinson Cavaniai??i??s form is absolutely crucial now during the final fold of the season.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Napoli 2-0 Palermo

.

AC MILAN

V

ATALANTA

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

****

.

The defending champions may win all their remaining champions and yet miss out on their objective to retain the title. Apart from winning all that comes their way, Milan must hope Juventus drop points at least on two occasions. With their moral boosting 1-4 away victory over Siena, Milan are favourites to run another riot at Atalanta this midweek. Cassanoai??i??s return has bolstered the attack and Ibrahimovic too has found his scoring boots again.

Atalanta have had a highly impressive campaign this season and despite the penalty of six points that they were awarded at the start of the season, their incredible run sees them in the top half of the table, far away from teams that are uncertain of surviving another season in Serie A. However, playing Milan at San Siro is a different ball game altogether (though Amauri may disagree). Atalanta are going into this game with two back-to-back victories against Chievo and Fiorentina but are least likely to salvage even a point against the Rossoneri, who showed plenty of signs of their return to the original form in their previous game.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Milan 3-1 Atalanta

.

CATANIA

V

BOLOGNA

Stadio Angelo Massimino, Catania

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

****

.

Both the sides have had a fairly successful season so far and are pretty well positioned in the table occupying the eighth and eleventh spots, respectively. There isnai??i??t much left to play for either of the sides in the remainder of the season but both can push further for a certain top half finish with a win. Under the tutelage of ex-Roma marksman Vincenzo Montella, Catania have flourished beyond expectations and have surprised many with their current standing. However, they are coming into this game not in the best of forms after a win, a loss and a draw in their three previous encounters.

Bologna were considered a one man team at the start of the season given their skipper Marco Di Vaioai??i??s importance to their progress. At one stage, they struggled to keep pace with other mid-table teams but have successfully been able to find themselves a comfortable position where they can be certain of another season in the top tier of Italian football. Ahead of the likes of Palermo and Fiorentina, they too have showed a lot of promise during the season. Their current form is not top notch but the recent win over Genoa should do their confidence good. The team has a good goal-scoring knack but is pretty vulnerable on defensive front.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Catania 1-1 Bologna

.

CESENA

V

UDINESE

Stadio Dino Manuzzi, Cesena

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

****

.

Like Napoli, Udinese are another side running in for the Champions League spot and needless to say, they too cannot afford to drop anymore points. Their latest win over Lazio ai??i?? a game that ended rather controversially ai??i?? is expected to get them back to the winning ways after a drought of wins that lasted too long for their fansai??i?? liking. The club owner too commented on Guidolinai??i??s tactical errors that stopped Udinese producing positive results but a highly important win over direct competitors for European football should allow everyone to take a sigh of relief.

Cesena have been relegated in their second season in Serie A since their promotion and there is absolutely nothing that may motivate during their last few games in the league. They quite managed to grab a lead against Inter over the weekend playing at San Siro but to nobodyai??i??s surprise, Inter found two back to add to Cesenaai??i??s misery. Playing one of their last two remaining home games, Cesena may be fancying a chance to provide a shocker to their opponents but with so much at stake, Udinese are highly unlikely to do anything silly.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Cesena 0-1 Udinese

.

FIORENTINA

V

NOVARA

Stadio Artemio Franchi, Florence

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

.

Few people expected Fiorentinaai??i??s season to go as haywire as it has turned out to be towards the end. Languishing in sixteenth, they are coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss to Atalanta. From the looks of it, Fiorentina are safe enough to survive in the league but had things gone only little differently, they might have found a real tough job at their hands to ensure survival. Novara are as good as relegated and but for a miracle, theyai??i??d go off Serie A after making it to the top division post a hiatus that lasted for five decades. This game might turn out to be a very uninteresting affair for neither of the teams is high on motivation. Fiorentina were expected to bounce back post their rather surprising away wins over both Milan and Roma but against Atalanta, they were back to being what theyai??i??ve been the entire season ai??i?? unorganized and unimaginative.

With their last three games, including this one, being against sides having had a season worse than theirs, Fiorentina might fancy cashing in on points to end the season on an encouraging note. However, the technical frailties in their play are hardly a secret.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction:Ai??Fiorentina 0-0 Novara

.

GENOA

V

CAGLIARI

Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genoa

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

****

.

Genoaai??i??s season has been inexplicably horrific and it is extremely discouraging to see them struggling to stay out of the relegation zone. Their last game at home was a shambolic 1-4 defeat at the hands of Siena, a game that was intervened by their ultras who questioned the playersai??i?? worth to wear a Genoa shirt. Post the humiliations, they were expected to bounce back to prove a point to the fans but have gone on to incur two more consecutive losses at the hands of Milan and Bologna. Rodrigo Palacio has been the only saving grace in an abysmal season for the Rossoblu.

Cagliari too arenai??i??t doing particularly great but have collected enough points to remain safe above the danger zone. Having collected four points in their last two home games, theyai??i??d see themselves a good chance against a wounded Genoa who simply cannot afford to drop anymore points for the next two weeks. Genoaai??i??s hunger and the panic caused in the dressing room may finally bring out their best to grind a result that appeases the home fans.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Genoa 1-0 Cagliari

.

JUVENTUS

V

LECCE

Juventus Stadium, Turin

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

****

.

Juventus have been the story of the season beyond any doubts and Antonio Conte shall not forgive himself, if the boys blow it from here. Two wins in the three remaining games ai??i?? all against teams far inferior in quality in comparison to theirs ai??i?? Juventus cannot ask for a better opportunity to claim the Scudetto after six long years.

Lecce have had some exceptional moments in the season but have been disappointing, by and large. They are currently lying in 18th in the table and are expected to give a tough fight to Genoa in the race for survival. Their showing lately has been poor in the league and it is increasingly looking like they too will follow Cesena after spending two seasons with the big boys.

Juventus are currently leading Milan by three points and a win at home will almost ascertain their claim on the title. Given their recent form, anything but a Lecce mauling will not be a wise manai??i??s bet.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Juventus 3-0 Lecce

.

LAZIO

V

SIENA

Stadio Olimpico, Rome

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

****

.

Being one of the four contenders for the priceless third spot, Lazio play one of their most important games of the season here. After spending reasonably good amount of time occupying the last European spot, their form dipped and currently they find themselves down to the sixth position below the likes of Napoli, Inter and Udinese in that order. With a tough away game against Atalanta being next in line followed by a probable winner-takes-it-all battle against Inter on the final matchday, Lazio must ensure they do not drop any points here playing home. They have collected only one single point in their last two games and they must put behind the disappointment of the two back to back losses against Novara and Udinese.

Siena are safely positioned above the relegation contenders and look certain to spend another year in the top flight. The latest home defeat against Milan was demoralising but Lazio are in anything but red hot form. Siena have been a tough side to beat for many of the supposedly big sides in the league and Lazio may find it harder than most expect.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Lazio 1-0 Siena

.

PARMA

V

FC INTERNAZIONALE

Stadio Ennio Tardini, Parma

Wednesday, May 2, 2012; 18:45 Hrs GMT

.

It has been an extremely sinusoidal season for Inter which has seen them at both the ends of the spectrum. However, allai??i??s well that ends well and as things stand, Inter are in with a great opportunity to qualify for Europeai??i??s premier cup competition, which by their own standards should be just a formality in an ideal world. But, such has been the nature of this season that they find themselves struggling against the newly emerged forces in Italy.

Inter are currently fourth on the table and with their last two games of the season being tough tests against Milan and Lazio, they are at little choice but to raise the bar here and deliver. A European qualification will be a remarkable achievement from the season given the way things have shaped for Inter for the most part of it.

Parma have been in an exceedingly good form and will not make it any easy for Inter to go past them at their own den. They have won their last four games and Inter may have wished to face them at some other time in the season.

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction: Parma 1-1 Inter
