Manchester United v Arsenal Rival Rendezvous – For Every van Persie There Is A Santi Cazorla

Fergie & Wenger- Still going strong!

There was once an era when a match between Arsenal and Manchester United was one of the most bloodiest of all clashes in England. Those were the days when footballers like Patrick Viera and Roy Keane lead their respective clubs on the field, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex were the staunchest of enemies. But in recent years the rivalry hasAi??mellowed down to a certain extent, mostly due to the fact that Arsenal over the past few seasons have failed to maintain a strong title challenge throughout the season. Sir Alex and Wenger have also developed a mutual respect for each and those fierce (and controversial) press conferences are now things of the past. But despite all these, this still remains one of the biggest rivalry in the Premier League and the recent Robin van Persie transfer saga has added a bit more spice to this encounter. The emotions these matches generated among the fans is unimaginable.

The resident team at TheHardTackle is not immune to such emotions and it is only fair that we allow the fans in us to come out in force in the buildup to this massive clash. Ai??As part of our Rival Rendezvous series, we putAi??Sounak MukherjeeAi??(SM) in the Arsenal corner to trade blows with United fanAi??Nipun MalhotraAi??(NM). Each gets to ask the other a set of six questions, designed specifically to get the blood boiling. So hold on to your hats and enjoy the ride that is sure to get bumpy.

NM: So we meet again, eh? First of all congratulations for that brilliant comeback in the midweek, awe-inspiring stuff. But, for me nothing has changed, really, as Arsenal still remain mere pretenders and clearly few paces off the front three. Progress is a term widely used in football these days and this leads me to my question, is Arsenal as a football club actually progressing or is standing still the wise thing to do for now, with the crazy economic conditions our game operates in?

SM:Ai??First, I’ll answer your question (Is the Club progressing?) in one word and then go into the details. Yes, the club is most certainly progressing. We conceded a little less than a million goals last season, and now we have, as you are reading this, the best defensive record in the league, if that is not progress, I don’t know what is. From an overall perspective, Arsenal, now have a perfect mix of youth and experience, something that was missing in the team in the last four seasons. So, even in that respect, we have progressed as a club. Finally, if trophies are the be all-end all yardstick for progress, then, yes, we are stuck at a limbo of expectations and potential which are not getting converted to silverware.

NM: You must be expecting this one for sure; Robin Van Persie is a name that has perhaps reignited this simmering rivalry yet again with his much publicized switch from North London to Manchester. Have Arsenal moved on from the Dutchmanai??i??s shadows, may be not completely but perhaps to the point that the pain has given way to casual indifference? Seeing RVPai??i??s name on the score sheet for United almost every weekend a reason for troubled sleep among Gooner ranks? Will your lot forgive him and acknowledge his contribution to your beloved club, someday, ever?

SM:Ai??The Gooners, who can’t sleep at night because some treacherous Dutch football player for some random club in the league is banging in a lot of goals, are not really fans. We have improved as a lot in leaps and bounds after van Persie has left. Now, the goal-scoring is a collective responsibility and so is the defending. We play a team game, unfortunately, we are too serious about playing a team game, because we perform poorly in unison too. Ai??

As far as forgetting him is concerned, well, we are totally over him. We have moved ahead and accepted the fact that no one player in the team will give us 30 goals in a season. Moreover, for every van Persie you have, there is a Santi Cazorla with us.

NM: A question on Arsene Wenger, someone who I deeply admire and respect for his contribution to the game and also as one of the few genuine footballing men around. Wenger has done it all and has always championed the cause of youth to the point that he had become the butt of a few repulsive chants. But in the last season or two Wenger seems to have molded his strategy, the acquisitions of Arteta, Podolski, Cazorla and Mertesacker are a case in point of the change in approach. Do you see this as an acceptance by the great Frenchman that his youth policy was perhaps flawed and possibly imperfect in the current competitive world? In hindsight had Arsene been more careful in balancing youth with experience, the current seven year trophy drought wouldnai??i??t have materialized, agreed?

SM:Ai??Honestly, I can write an article to explain this. But, space permits to cut it short and precise. Arsene’s Youth Policy was the only logical thing for the club to take upon in 2004-05′ when the stadium loan was taken. Arsenal Football Club is the most perfectly run club in Europe from a sustenance perspective. We don’t buy players from transfer budget but from player sales. Sometimes it gets difficult to digest the incredible signings of other clubs like Adebayor for 25 Mil and Hazard for 30 Mil, but then when the fans see a player like Santi Cazorla and his transfer fees, they realize that what Arsene does is close to ‘football transfer magic’. If you ask me, if the policy was flawed, the answer will be ‘No’, if you ask me if the policy worked in this ‘competitive’ market, unfortunately the answer will be ‘No’ again. Sigh!

NM: A lot has been made of Arsenalai??i??s improved defense, consequently Steve Bould has earned praise for the same. Personally, I believe itai??i??s too early to make a call, anyways this game could really prove to be the defining moment, do you think the Gunners can keep the duo of Rooney & RVP quiet? What do you make of the current United side and also Fergieai??i??s decision to buy the Dutch hitman?

SM: I think now we understand the defensive responsibility of the entire team, every player has multiple jobs to do. Even during set-pieces, Giroud falls back completely and provides height and physical presence at the back. So, if the team can perform as per plan, I don’t see why they can’t stop RvP and Rooney. Of course, moments of brilliance can totally change the picture, but then that can’t be an excuse now.

NM: I had to ask this, as a realistic Gooner what are your hopes from this season, pragmatically? Top four and a good cup run or you think that if Arsenal can keep a solid base at the back this side can challenge for top honors? The word revenge has been mooted around in some quarters for last seasonai??i??s events at Old Trafford; do you see yourself getting something from the impending trip to the Theatre of Dreams?

SM:Ai??To be very realistic, I, as a fan, sitting far away from London, not buying Season Tickets, can say ‘4th place is fine with me’, but that is not the case with people who invest a lot of money on buying tickets. Then again, we don’t run the club, we are only bothered by the events on the football pitch. In fact, if we win games, nobody will give a camel’s nose about how the club is being run. So, for me, 4th place is a certainty. I ‘ll be pleasantly surprised if we finish above that.

NM:Ai??Ai??What is the single most important factor that will decide this contest? The duel between Santi Cazorla and Carrick or with the news that Gibbs will be missing the second choice Arsenal left back possibly Santos up against a rampant Valencia?

SM:Ai??It has to be how efficient our defenders can be against such a dangerous strike-force. If we defend really well, we can attack without hesitation. We need to trust Andre Santos and even provide him as much cover as possible in the form of Podolski. Overall, Arsenal’s defense vs United’s attack will decide the game. A 1-1 for me, I believe!

Having survived that round of grilling, it is time now forAi??SounakAi??to hurl a few grenades towardsAi??Nipun.

SM: In the presser earlier, Arsene had requested Arsenal fans not to boo van Persie. I am not sure fans will listen to the manager, you get what you give! But, from a totally Manchester United perspective, how big a signing was that, after all?

NM: After initial skepticism United fans have taken to RVP and he is certainly a fan favorite now. What has certainly helped is the fact that Van Persie has made a seamless transition and for strikers every goal scored his worth its weight in gold. I believe itai??i??s a massive coup; never did we fans imagine that this would be a possibility but always trust Fergie to achieve the impossible. Whatai??i??s even more fascinating is the idea of Rooney and RVP lining up together in tandem and we are already seeing shades of something special.

SM: After the midweek loss to Chelsea in a 120 mins game, how much of a difficulty will it be for United to play Arsenal now? How many from that team will feature this weekend?

NM: While Chelsea brought out the big guns, Fergie rested almost all his first teamers and hence all of them should be well rested and raring to go. Among those who played in that epic encounter at the Bridge only Rafael is a certainty to start this weekend, also one of Welbeck or Hernandez might be involved but thatai??i??s about it. Ergo, fatigue will and shouldnai??i??t be a problem this Saturday afternoon.

SM: With the opposition fans/players/managers always upon United blaming them for buying referees, how does the manager/fans handle such a situation or rather put to bed an atrocious claim?

NM: At first it was annoying then it became a nuisance but seriously now it is just amusing. There is no point debating and justifying, as ABUai??i??s canai??i??t be reasoned with. The sheer hatred for Man United is just mindboggling at times, but we laugh it off. If there was any truth to such allegations surely the likes of Wenger would be up in arms, and the Sheikhs and Russians of this world would also have a say, wouldnai??i??t they? This midweek, the travelling United contingent also saw the funny side of it as they came up with this classic banner ai??i?? Clattenburg ai??i?? Referee, Leader, Legend.

SM: Manchester United lie in the second place in the league but they have almost conceded two goals every game they have played so far. In the absence of Vidic, how can United cope in the league now? Is Ferdinand way past his glory days, as there are rumors floating of West Ham wanting their player back after all these years?

NM:Ai??Vidic will be back after a month and as you can see we are just 1 point off the top, so despite not being at our best defensively we have coped, just about. Also, the fixture list will ease up soon coupled with the return of Smalling and Jones, I think we will be fine. The heartening aspect is the form of Rafael, who has been absolutely sensational and looks to have nailed the Right Back berth.

As far as Ferdinand goes, he canai??i??t play 2 games a week regularly and thatai??i??s a known fact now. Yet, he can deliver man of the match performances on the big stage like his outstanding contribution at Anfield. Rio needs to be used with caution and the manager will do that once Smalling and Jones return. For me, Rio remains a vital cog in the team, and has at least two more years of football at United left in him.

SM: With Rooney, Chicharito and van Persie, United have, unquestionably, the best striker partnership in England, maybe, even Europe, but doesn’t the midfield lack creativity and spark? Isn’t there too much of dependence on the strikers to deliver?

NM: Yes. Next question please.
On a more serious note, this issue continues to trouble most of us fans, but Ferguson remains confident. Defensively, Carrick is the only renowned ball winner with Fletcher trying to fight his fitness demons. And for me personally that remains more of an issue than the aforementioned creative spark.

On a positive note Tom Cleverley is coming up nicely while Anderson still has my backing to get his United career back on track, so we can see why Fergie has been hesitant in splurging on a CM. Finally for at least this season we have the evergreen Ginger wizard, the likes of whom can never be truly replaced.

SM: Ai??Finally, after more than a decade of that infamous Pizza-Gate incident at Old Trafford, can United-Arsenal games be that fierce ever again?

NM: Ai??Naah, canai??i??t see that happening, not for the foreseeable future at least. The reasons are two folds, firstly Arsenal have dropped off the pace considerably and right now Chelsea and City occupy that top billing with Liverpool there for historic reasons. Also, the likes of Viera, Henry and Fabregas, have left the scene, so too have Keane and the Neville brothers, the duel has lost its edge but perhaps the Van Persie transfer could spice things up a bit. There could be a few tackles flying the Dutchmanai??i??s way this weekend and that could change the atmosphere around Old Trafford.
