Considering the wealth of Manchester City, you’d expect that with a new transfer window open, they would be extremely busy as usual. But not necessarily so. January transfer windows can be hard to judge, and hard to buy in – often purchases feel like panic buys or stop-gap measures. The last thing City need is the latter of those two, and more burden on the wage bill. But with the Toure brothers now away for up to eight weeks, Roberto Mancini may be keen to reinforce, and it’s an open secret that he would like at least a couple of more players. But with the financial fair play rules looming over the horizon, City’s board may not be quite as keen, and it seems Mancini has been told to sell before he buys.
Possible Arrivals
Daniele De Rossi
Mancini has made no secret of his admiration for the Roma player. The question is, can he wrench him away from his beloved Rome, a city and club that he loves more than anything? Roma are believed to be offering him a lucrative new contract worth A?180,000 a week to keep him at the club, and City will struggle to get him. The 28 year old has 70 caps for Italy, and fits the bill for what Mancini would like in his squad – a deep lying midfielder with great distribution, especially now that Nigel De Jong has fallen out of favour, probably due to his limited distribution skills.
Alessio Cerci
Mancini has often been quoted by the press as needing a wide player – having failed in getting Alexis Sanchez in the summer, he was also linked then, and now, with Fiorentina’s Alessio Cerci. It’s a strange choice, as the Fiorentina fans would apparently not be too sad to see him go, as he can be a very frustrating player. But on his day, there is no doubt he is talented.
Eden Hazard
There has been little transfer talk regarding City yet, for a change, so it’s hard to say who might be coming.Ai??Belgian playmaker and Lille player Eden Hazard has been linked to City and numerous other teams. He would not be cheap at over A?30m, but he is a fantastic player. A January move seems unlikely, but expect activity in the summer, if not to City, then to some other big club.
Wesley Sneijder
There has been talk in the press of a straight swap with Carlos Tevez. However, this is highly unlikely – Sneijder is not the type of player Mancini needs most right now, though a possible deal would in theory be tempting. Swap deals rarely happen, though.
Wayne Rooney
Surely not? After the British press reported Alex Ferguson was ready to sell Wayne Rooney on the eve of the FA Cup weekend, as sure as night follows day was the subsequent reports linking City to the player, as they were of course a year ago. One paper says City want A?60m Rooney, but the club and player have dismissed any reports of him leaving. This is a move that surely will not happen, especially with City’s owners looking to cut expenditure.
Elsewhere, the emphasis may be to continue to develop the academy, and buy young – as we speak, a 14 year old Norwegian is on his way to City. This fits in with Cityai??i??s intention to eventually curb spending and bring through youth to the first team where possible.
Possible Departures
Carlos Tevez
The world prays that this particular saga will be finally resolved in the January transfer window. Both Milan teams seem the likely destination, if a price can be agreed, likely to be just over A?20m (though rumours persist that City are holding out for A?30m). Apparently, both teams would prefer a loan deal with the option to buy in the summer, but City want a permanent deal. PSG are also interested, but Tevez clearly isn’t.
Wayne Bridge
The forgotten man of Manchester City, things came to a head recently after a public slanging match between the player and the manager. Again the issue is wages, but expect a loan deal somewhere in January (maybe QPR), with City subsidising the wages.
Nedum Onuoha
As is the case in every transfer window, expect him to be linked with various mid-table Premiership team, and move on loan eventually, or permanently for a cheap A?3-A?4m
Adebayor and Guidetti will remain on loan, along with others (such as Boyata and Michael Johnson).
The only other area of weakness is at left-back, where Aleksander Kolarov hasnai??i??t proved a reliable back up to Gael Clichy. However, a January move for Kolarov or an incoming back-up for Clichy seem unlikely in January, but expect some activity in the summer – Kolarov may well return to Italy.
Summary
Itai??i??s hard to judge Manciniai??i??s intentions in the January transfer window, but it is probably safe to assume that this will be one of the quietest windows in Cityai??i??s recent history. As ever, there is a need to get rid of ai???deadwoodai???, but this may result in more loan deals. Hopefully Carlos Tevez will secure a permanent deal out. Either way, Mancini will want to strengthen further, but his primary target De Rossi may be out of his reach. A wide player is a possibility, plus further recruitment of youngsters, but the need for an additional central defender now looks unlikely due to Kolo Toureai??i??s once-inevitable departure now not looking that likely after a recent resurgence in the first team. City may be best sticking with what they have, for now, and waiting until the end of the season to strengthen the squad.
