It was billed as the biggest game in Premiership history. A potential audience of 600 million people were to tune in to watch the two Manchester clubs go head to head for the title for the first time in over forty years. It is debatable if this was the biggest games since 1992, when the Premier League age dawned.
After all, Chelsea went to United in a similar position last season as City found themselves pre-match on Monday. The difference here was that City had home advantage, and this was a derby. A week of nerves, taunts and bravado boiled down to this, and as it turned out, it was the most-watched match in Premiership history.
As with all big games, it attracted a celebrity crowd. Michel Platini was rumored to be trying to make it to the match, Diego Maradona was definitely there, along with Liam Gallagher, who gate-crashed the post-match press conference. Ex-chairman Thaksin Shinawatra sat in amongst the fans, and ex-players Shaun Goater and Shaun Wright Phillips were given back-stage passes. Even Eden Hazard was there, watching his potential suitors. The rain thankfully stopped for a day, as Manchester was magically transformed into a sunny paradise (of sorts). The stage was set, and the atmosphere was electric.

For all the hype, the match was unlikely to live up to the billing, due to the high stakes and the tension that inevitably tags along. But perhaps the telling moment occurred not during the match, but an hour before it even began, when the team line ups were announced. City went with an unchanged line up from the side that had beaten Wolves 2-0 the previous week. United however, went with a line up that had not been seen before, and appeared almost to be an acceptance by Alex Ferguson that United couldnai??i??t go toe-to-toe with City.
Was it also an admission that years of Glazer management had left him with an inferior squad? Before the match, Ferguson had stated that he would never send out a team to play for a draw, but here was a line-up that appeared to contradict that ai??i?? and so it proved. In the end, it turned out to be the first game in three years in which United had not registered a single shot on target.
On the touchline too, Ferguson was showing signs of a changed man. Like many a manager, he is well-known for having the odd word or a hundred in the ear of the fourth official, but it is rare that he has a touchline spat with an opposing manager, especially one with whom he is known to have an amicable relationship.
And whatever happens in the final two games of the season (and it is still hanging in the balance), there were more signs on Monday night that times are changing. Last seasonai??i??s FA Cup semi-final and the 6-1 demolition of United at Old Trafford had helped remove a feeling of fear that past City teams may have felt when facing United. Even when United were victorious at the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup in January, the second half 10-man 2 goal comeback had United rattled when at half-time it looked like they could emulate that earlier 1-6 score-line. David Silva in fact said as much after the match on Monday ai??i?? the psychological hold United had over City has gone.
For City, the title race is now firmly back in their hands. However, it is too early to be celebrating with a daunting trip to Newcastle on the horizon. With United playing two teams with little to play for, and City finishing the season against a QPR team desperately fighting against relegation, there is plenty of work to be done. Roberto Mancini has laid the groundwork by annoying the Sunderland manager Martin Oai??i??Neill, a deliberate act designed to ensure that both teams United face will try and prove him wrong and show that for United these are not easy games as Mancini has claimed.

But whatever happens, this is a new Manchester City. The old City raised the hopes before dashing them cruelly. The old City would have lost the FA Cup semi-final last season (or gone one better and lost the final instead). The old City would have seen its season end with a whimper, or at least surrender the title at home to their fiercest rivals. When City held a five point lead at the top of the table, and were destroying opposition teams earlier this season, it seemed this would be their best ever chance to win the title. But come what may, they have overcome psychological hurdles in the past month that should ensure that they can compete for the title season in, season out.
In addition, the constant talk of Fergusonai??i??s mind games, along with his squadai??i??s greater title-winning experience has proved to be something of an exaggeration. Cityai??i??s squad have won titles themselves, many cups, and a World Cup to boot. This is not new territory for many of them. The City squad contains plenty of players who have dealt with high pressure football before. Balotelli has league titles to his name, as does Edin Dzeko, winning a title with Wolfsburg for the first time.
Gael Clichy won a title as a young man at Arsenal, whilst of course Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez have been there and done it. David Silva has represented his country on the ultimate stage, and apart from the 40 other trophies that the squad can count between them, it is a team full of internationals who have played in many huge games. Now they have to prove once more that they have what it takes. There may be more twists and turns to come, and the last two days of the football season could yet provide the greatest climax ever to a Premiership season.
