It is rare to lose a home Derby match, exiting the FA Cup, and yet leave the ground feeling proud of the team’s performance, but that was the situation facing many Manchester City fans after their 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, whose elation was soon dampened slightly by drawing Liverpool in the next round.
The reason for the pride came from a spirited second half display after a first half where pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong. A man down and three goals down at half-time, talk was of whether United could match or even beat City’s 6-1 score line at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Pride was mixed with relied at the final whistle that honor had been restored. Talk of moral victories abounded, not that United will care as it is their team that progresses to the next round.
The team news provided plenty of shocks. City, shorn of five first-teamers still decided to rest their goalkeeper Joe Hart and left-back Gael Clichy, with Costel Pantilimon and Aleksander Kolarov stepping into the breach. The biggest shock though was on Unitedai??i??s bench where Paul Scholes came out of retirement until the end of the season to be named in the squad.
The Match
City dominated possession in the early stages but found themselves a goal down from United’s first attack. Rooney found Valencia on the right and a pin-point cross found Rooney once more, whose bullet header found the back of the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Not soon after came the gameai??i??s main talking point – a red card for Cityai??i??s captain Vincent Kompany. Debate still rages on its legitimacy, but most surely think it to have been ridiculously harsh. Whilst a minority see the excessive force and recklessness that could merit a dismissal, most in the ground were surprised to even see a foul awarded – after all Kompany was in control and won the ball cleanly – Nani was not touched, as shown by the fact he remained on his feet. Whatever the rights or wrongs though, the fact remained that after only ten minutes City were a goal and a man down. The day was turning into a nightmare.
The rest of the half panned out as United had hoped ai??i?? with the extra man they took control of the match, retaining possession and regularly fashioning chances. A second goal came after a half-clearance via Nasriai??i??s head was superbly volleyed in by Welbeck. A third then followed from the penalty spot, a Kolarov foul resulting in Rooneyai??i??s spot-kick being saved but he was first to the rebound, heading into the net.
Mancini must take credit for a tactical master stroke at half-time, changing to 3 at the back with full backs patrolling the wings to support the midfield and attack. An early goal in the second half too (an excellent free kick from the otherwise underwhelming Kolarov), just three minutes into the second half not only revived Cityai??i??s confidence, but rocked Unitedai??i??s. The expected deluge of goals never came and it was City that grew in stature.
Paul Scholes came on with half an hour to go, and whilst he finished the game with a 97% pass accuracy, he crucially gave the ball away to James Milner who crossed for Aguero to score at the second attempt. A late free kick and corner troubled United, but City could not find that vital equalizer. As the full-time whistle blew, both teams were applauded off the pitch.
So what now for City?
Ironically, the defeat could help City in succeeding in their main goal – winning the Premiership. A fully-fit squad two weeks ago is now creaking severely, and a run of extra games wouldn’t have helped. Defeat in a derby and a cup exit is never good, but City should be spurred on by their second half display in their attempts to secure a league and cup double. There has been some rubbish written in the press recently that Mancini has no right to complain about injuries considering the money at his disposal, but they seem incapable of grasping the simple concept that City’s squad is the same size as everyone else’s.
A frantic January will test the squad to its limits. With the Toure brothers away for up to 8 weeks, Vincent Kompany will now also miss four games (an appeal against his red card was always doomed to fail), whilst Dzeko and Balotelli missed the FA Cup defeat through injury. Now David Silva is thought to be an injury worry with his ankle, whilst Samir Nasri played through the cup game after a bout of the flu.
The press report that Mancini wants to buy a defender to make up for the absentees, as he feels City don’t have enough players for this critical period – time will tell if he gets his way, but the January window will probably be more about getting rid of more surplus players – mainly Carlos Tevez, to somewhere in Milan.

Cityai??i??s immediate goal is to defeat Liverpool over two legs in the Carling Cup semi-final, to be guaranteed a Championship side in the final, thus giving them a strong chance to capture another trophy.
The Europa League will be the least important of the three trophies they are now fighting for, but Mancini can still be expected to take the competition at least semi-seriously, and field strong sides. Porto will be a tough draw, and should guarantee another couple of exciting games.
But the primary goal, as it has been since August, is the Premiership title. The race to the title seems to be a three-horse race now with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, so City fans will be hoping that City can hold onto top spot over the next few difficult weeks – if they do, a first Premiership title could be within their grasp.
