Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table with two games remaining after Vincent Kompanyai??i??s header in the stoppage time of first half saw them leapfrogging Manchester United.

The game that was dubbed as the biggest game of the season, lacked qualities that we saw earlier when the two sides met at the Old Trafford. It was devoid of any tactical and technical brilliance instead there was high tension all over.
Sir Alex Ferguson was upbeat prior to the match saying “We’re going out to win tonight, I’ve never gone for a draw in my life.“
Manchester United, who usually are experts in handling these type of situations, couldnai??i??t raise their game. Their performance was lamentable, which wasnai??i??t helped by a dire team selection. Ferguson fielded a 4-5-1 formation with Ryan Giggs and Park Ji Sung given starts in the midfield while Rooney stayed upfront all alone. Nani was used on the right, Chris Smalling partnered Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence and Phil Jones started at right back.
Mancini and City were like a sleepy blue ocean carrying out the task in style. Since, the gap extended to eight points, the Italian somehow found a way to maintain a low key profile. Every time, his side won and United dropped points within last four games, he ironically casted doubts on his side and maintaining a stance that United will sweep them aside easily. Mancini didnai??i??t feel the need to change his side. He knew exactly what he is doing.
Ferguson has always trusted Park Ji-Sung, especially in big games. He used him high up the pitch, more centrally to track back the movements of Yaya Toure.
But what came out was catastrophe. He wasn’t fully fit and thereby chased the Ivorian midfielder like a shadow, failing to match his guile and movement with stamina and energy. He was deployed to nullify the constant threat of Toure from the middle, but this time couldn’t perform the task assigned diligently. As per the stat goes the former Barcelona man completed more passes than any other player, essaying a vaunting dominance in the centre of the park.
Ryan Giggs was stationed in the left hand side but his presence was hardly felt. Ferguson’s main strategy was to exploit the weaknesses of Clichy.
Nani was expected to encore the performance of two years back, when at the Emirates he gave Clichy a tormenting night, which the Frenchman would never like to remember.
What was most frustrating to watch was the game lacked quality from both the sides. City took a while to settle down though lacked rhythm and tempo.
Rooney cut a sorrow figure as he was left isolated for most of the game. Again, the inclusion of Park created all sorts of problems. Though, he usually does the role efficiently.
Ferguson fielded a typical European formation, using Rooney as a false number nine, as a draw would have done good for them. But Park was up against a dynamic midfielder like Yaya Toure. While the Korean tried to stay goal side of Toure, it caused a crater of a gap between him and Rooney. Further, when the away side retained possession United’s transitions were poor, passing was ambitious and clearance was rushed – as a result neither they could bring Rooney into the game nor they could sustain possession in the middle.
United’s best bet was to play the ball to Rooney and hoping that he might do something extraordinary. But Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott were outstanding with their positioning and gave the England striker no time on the ball, leaving him frustrated.
The only active battle of the night happened on the right hand side of the pitch. United were over-run in the left hand side of the pitch. The combination of Zabaleta and Nasri created acres of space leaving Evra gasping for breath at times. They gave Evra all sorts of troubles ai??i?? sometimes it was becoming two-versus-one, while at other times Nasri was drifting in. But the end product was not effective. Corners and passes in the final third were created in large numbers but without any good effect.
The match was finally decided by a solitary goal, that too from a set-piece. A dangerous ball in the box came from David Silvaai??i??s corner and Kompany thumped in a header, rising above Smalling in front of him.
Probably, what was most frustrating was the response from United. They should have gone for more men in the box. Ferguson introduced Welbeck in place of Park shuffling the formation to 4-4-1-1. City came up with a sharp riposte by bringing De Jong in place of Tevez making it 4-5-1. City went bit defensive and controlled the game till the end making sure they hold the lead till the end.
It is easy to criticize United here. But, the game was decided by only one goal coming from a set piece. Had United defended that corner well, City might not have won the match. Secondly, it is easy to put the knife on Parkai??i??s head but how many times the Korean has been Unitedai??i??s unsung hero in big matches?
In a season like this, when The Red Devils were hit terribly by series of injuries, they had to put up a show with the resources they have. They lost Fletcher, Anderson, Cleverley (who was playing so well at the start of the season) and even in this vital fixture they lost Evans (arguably their best defender), so the task was never easy.
Finally, where the league is heading now? It is unprecedented not only for United but for any other team of Premier League to have lost an eight-point lead with only six games remaining. Sadly, the title is not in their hands now. They could have done more but sometimes it is easier said than done. Otherwise, football wouldnai??i??t have been a bloody hell.
