With Liverpool v Cardiff City – first big domestic final of the season around the corner, TheHardTackle starts its build up to Wembley with a sound warning to all those writing off the Welsh club.
Although Cardiff City have not featured in the top division of English football in four decades, have reached their first League Cup final and lack the domestic success of a ‘big club’ like Liverpool, it is important to note an important statistic before this weekend’s final. This will be the fourth time that Cardiff City have played at the new Wembley Stadium in the last four years, whereas Liverpool are yet to play a major game at the stadium.
It would be fair to say that two of these occasions were not cup finals (FA Cup semi-final and play-off final), however the smaller clubs’ pedigree when looking at Wembley appearances at the new stadium is bettered only by Manchester United and Chelsea – not bad when considering the relative size differences in the clubs.
The history of Cardiff City and cup finals is sparse compared to their rivals in red but this belies the true tale as Cardiff City are still the only team to have taken the FA Cup out of England, beating Arsenal in their now infamous 1927 win. They have also come runners up in the FA Cup twice at Wembley (1925 and 2008) leaving their total record, at Wembley, with a respectable 2 wins and 3 losses.
The recent form of the Bluebirds in the league may leave some of their 31,000 travelling fans with cause for concern due to a slide in the performance. A month ago, Cardiff City had the fewest defeats in the Npower Championship with just 4 defeats in 28 games, but have slipped to 3 defeats in the last five games conceding 10 goals and scoring just 4.
This has seen them drop to fourth in the table with surrounding teams having up to two games in hand. Manager Malky Mackay has sought to reiterate over the last few weeks that the Cup Final has not been a distraction but recent form suggests otherwise.
Although Cardiff City’s team sheet may not contain the wealth of world-famous names such as Gerrard, Reina and Suarez to name a few, it would be foolish to write off their squad and the talent it possesses. There are a number of players that will cause Liverpool problems on the pitch come match time on Sunday namely Kenny Miller, Peter Whittingham and Kevin McNaughton.
Kenny Miller is a nomadic striker who has played over 50 times for his country Scotland, scoring 28 goals. He was also the winner of Scottish Premier League’s Golden Boot despite leaving Rangers in January and he is Cardiff City’s joint top scorer this season.
Peter Whittingham is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Championship and has never been in greater demand; supposedly, the subject of a A?3M bid from West Ham United in the January transfer window. Whittingham has regularly scored goals for Cardiff in the last three seasons, finishing top scorer in the Championship two seasons ago.

Liverpool have plenty to fear from a Cardiff side that regularly scores first in most matches and until recently, had a very solid defence. The strength in Cardiff City lies in the contribution made by their hard-working midfield players and attacking full-backs and it’d be fair to say Liverpool won’t rest easy knowing that the much-loved Kevin McNaughton will be attacking the Liverpool left-back at every possible opportunity.
Cardiff have found goals from all areas of the pitch this season with centre backs Hudson, Turner and Gerrard (Anthony, Steven’s cousin) all finding the net this season from set plays. Liverpool will also have noted the immense long throw of Aaron Gunnarson who will regularly throw the ball some thirty yards right into the box.
Having made it to the final, it would be right to look at the manner in which Cardiff City have arrived at Wembley, as it is a story of last minute drama and penalties. Cardiff travelled to Oxford United in the first round and found themselves without many first team players due to international games. They met a spirited defence from the League Two outfit, and only managed to win in extra time after two goals from Peter Whittingham and Nat Jarvis.
The second round saw Cardiff play League One side Huddersfield and once again, went to extra-time thanks to a last minute Craig Conway goal where they won a dramatic game 5-3. The third round saw play-off rivals Leicester travel to Cardiff City stadium where a tightly contested game resulted in a penalty shoot out eventually finishing an incredible 7-6 to the bluebirds. Burnley travelled to Cardiff in the next round and were the first team to be beaten by Cardiff in normal time, when young star Joe Mason curled a winner in after 40 minutes.
This left Blackburn Rovers travelling to Cardiff in an immensely emotional quarter-final, played just days after the untimely death of Wales manager Gary Speed. Two goals in each half from Kenny Miller and Filip Kiss saw Cardiff safely through to an all-Championship semi-final, with Crystal Palace, the slayers of Manchester United.
Cardiff City lost a very tense first leg of the semi-final away at Crystal Palace and won the home leg one-nil thanks to an own goal from Anthony Gardner. Cardiff City hit the woodwork three times in open play and deservedly scraped past brave Palace thanks to two penalty saves from Cardiff goalkeeper Tom Heaton. And now, after an emotional journey to the final, Cardiff are potentially just 90 minutes from a giant killing victory over massive favourites Liverpool.
Cardiff City are likely to adopt a 4- 4-1-1 formation with emphasis on counter attack and high pressure football hoping to force Liverpool into mistakes. They will also hope to take advantage of Gunnarson’s long throw and attacking set-pieces, but no one is under any illusions as to the magnitude of the task facing Cardiff City.
As underdogs, Cardiff City will enjoy their day at Wembley. Many people will expect Liverpool to dominate the game, yet many more one suspects will be hoping that just like the boys in blue in last year’s final, Birmingham, the Bluebirds can spring a surprise and return back to South Wales with a trophy and a shot at European football.
