Indian Football witnessed historic scenes on 29th January when franchise owners of various clubs got together to bid for various international stars like Hernan Crespo, Fabio Cannavaro and Robert Pires among others. What followed was an IPL like auction and the world was forced to take note of this development in Indian Football. The PLS has had international media talk about and we at TheHardTackle take a closer look at this closely awaited event and preview how it will affect Indian Football in its most crucial phase.
PLS: The Initialization
Premier League Soccer or the PLS as it is popularly called is the brainchild of IFA and CMG, a leading sports management firm. The PLS will have 6 teams based at Kolkata, Barasat, Howrah, Haldia, Durgapur and Siliguri for the next ten years. It was decided that the teams will have a base price varying from 1 crore to 70 lakhs and will be owned by the franchises. To give PLS a professional flavor it was decided that franchisee will be required to set up a professional team which would consist of a CEO, a Team Manager, Professional Coaching Team and a Physio. The spending power for each franchise was limited to 12.5 crore for the first year. The foreign recruits were limited to 4 per team in order to give Indian players a chance. Each team could recruit 4 foreign players, 6 under 21 players, 6 catch mate players (domicile players), and 14 others Indian players.
It was decided to play the matches under the floodlight in order to make the game more attractive. Despite not having the approval of the AIFF and the ban on I-League players to sign for this mega event, a host of big international starts signed for the event. The announcement of icon players which included Favio Cannavaro, Roberto Pires, Hernan Crespo and Robbie Fowler created a stir in the international media and all eyes were set on the auction, which was to be held on the 31st of January.

PLS Auction: Who got what
The auction held on 31st January at Taj Bangla took the world by storm when a whopping $840,000 were spent on Hernan Crespo in a IPL-like auction, which saw the franchises fighting for the players. The base prices to buy a team looked small in front of what was actually paid for the franchises. Barasat with a base price of Rs. 80 lakhs was sold out for Rs. 25.15 crores. Kolkata and Siliguri with the base price of Rs. 1 Crore were sold out for Rs. 11.5 crores and Rs. 18 crores respectively. Howrah and Durgapur were sold out for Rs. 9 crores and 7.6 crores respectively. Haldia remained the only franchise to go unsold. Besides the icon players intense bidding was also seen for the coaching team which featured the like of world famous coaches like former Manchester city manager Peter Reid, Fernando Couto of SC Braga among others.

The hustle-bustle continued after the auction as well with the teams roping in various brand ambassadors and engaging themselves in marketing activities. The Barasat team revealed that had roped in former Indian captain to play for them and also had reached an understanding with him to allow United Sikkim players to play for them. If rumors are to believed then Sourav Ganguly has signed to become their brand ambassador.
What to Expect: Impact on Indian Football
The PLS will make world take note of India but it is a debatable issue whether PLS will actually help the Indian Football grow when the I-League which has a large appeal and a pan-IIT image has failed to do so. On one hand it will provide Indian fans an opportunity to see the stars like Crespo, Cannavaro and Pires from a close hand and also provide opportunity to ex-Indian players like Bhutia Vijayan and Ancheri among others to entertain the fans once again but on the other hand one wonders if these large amount of money could have been used to tap the talent at grass-root level and improve the infrastructure in the nation. Meanwhile, in a first in Indian football, a London based firm will be selling out TV rights for this tournament. It is being rumored that PLS will be telecasted in 50 countries across the world. The PLS will definitely take Indian football into the global households and will enhance the international viewership.

It’s cool that some of the world’s most famous footballers will be playing in India.There will be considerable interest in Indian football and that can only be good for all stakeholders. It’s too early to say just how successful the tournament will be.
Climax Lawrence, the Indian Captain sounded apprehensive about the success of the event because the PLS would miss the top Indian players and said that-
Fans will throng to the stadium at the start but we have to wait and see whether it’s sustainable. India’s top players – all of whom are playing in the I-League – will be missing and that’s possibly the only hindrance to the league’s success.
Clifford Miranda also sounded cautious and wished that AIFF could come up with a solution so that the Indian players could get to learn from the greats. HeAi??quoted-
Ai??The concept is good but my only concern is infrastructure. You are inviting some of the world’s best names here, but do we have the best of facilities to match? The big names have created a buzz. It’s good for Indian football. The top players are contracted with their clubs and it will be difficult for them to pledge loyalty to the PLS, but if the clubs, AIFF and organizers can come up with a solution, it’ll be good!
TheHardTackle believes that the PLS will help the game to become more popular among the spectators and the floodlit stadiums and the big foreign players will attract the people to the game. TheHardTackle hopes that that the huge money splashed at the foreign stars will also boost the local talent and will form a supply line for the national team and the I-League.
