When Chelsea will take on Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final in two weeks time, they will have absolutely nothing to lose. Nobody expected them to reach thus far and nobody expects them to bother the Catalan giants whatsoever. However, back in the Premier League, they have everything to lose, as the fight for the fourth place, and thus for Europe, will go down to the wire, in all likelihood.

This weekend, Roberto di Matteo will prepare his team to welcome Roberto Martinez’s Wigan, who have been in very good form, of late. Chelsea are 5 points behind Arsenal and Tottenham, with 7 games remaining. Arsenal will entertain Man City on Sunday, so it’s imperative for the Blues to win against Wigan and hope City, who themselves are fighting tooth and nail with United for the title, take two if not three points off the Gunners, reducing the gap to two points, with an impending head-to-head clash at the Emirates. In the last game, Chelsea did reasonably well to dispatch an injury-hit Aston Villa side 2-4 at Villa Park, and Di Matteo will hope that success in Europe can propel the team to keep performing in the League.

Wigan are presently 19th in the table, but their return of 13 out of a possible 24 points in their last eight games, losing just one, has gone a long way in giving them belief of avoiding a drop, yet again. Things took a turn for the better against Norwich, wherein Martinez, who’d messed up with team tactics and philosophy earlier in the season, mended ways to allow his team to play proper, reasonably attacking football again.

John Terry appears to be the only casualty for Chelsea, after the captain was substituted against benfica in the second half. Chelsea have confirmed that Terry is suffering from cracked ribs and that his health will be closely monitored. In addition to him, players such as Lampard, Torres, Ramires, and maybe Cole, who’d played in Champions League, are expected to be given some much-deserved rest against Wigan.

Gary Cahill and David Luiz look set to partner at the heart of the Chelsea defence, with Ivanovic and Bertrand starting at right and left back respectively. The double-pivot of the 4-2-3-1 formation may comprise of Mikel and Meireles, with Kalou, Mata and Sturridge ahead of them. Up front, Didier Drogba is expected to start this one, in place of Fernando Torres.

Even if Wigan weren’t in such good form, Chelsea aren’t in a position to take any team lightly, so there’s shouldn’t be room for any sort of complacency. As the game against Benfica suggested, the Blues could be happy sitting deep, allowing the visitors to have more of the ball, and hitting Wigan on the counter. However, such a passive tactic, which although would help in conserving energy, should only be deployed after taking an early lead. Otherwise, the home side could be in trouble.

The Latics manager is expected to field the same side that defeated Stoke City 2-0 last weekend, in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Al-Habsi in goal, ALcaraz and Caldwell in the centre, with Boyce and Figueroa as full-backs – that’s how the Wigan defence will line-up. Shaun Maloney, who was one of the reasons behind Wigan’s triumph at Anfield, will start on the right flank, with Beausejour on the left. The central midfield will comprise of McCarthy and McArthur. Victor Mosses has played reasonably well this season and he will support former Chelsea forward Franco Di Santo, who will be the furthermost player on the pitch for Wigan.

Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea)

Ever since Roberto di Matteo took over as interim boss, Danny hasn’t been a sure-shot starter, as he so often was under Villas-Boas. Di Matteo has preferred to deploy Ramires on the right wing rather than in his usual midfield role, than use the young Englishman. Knowing Sturridge, who rates himself very highly, it’s safe to assume that he’d be desperate to show the manager what he is missing whenever he leaves him on the bench. Although, Danny has scored 10 goals in the league thus far in the campaign, he would still like to finish the season on a strong note, albeit on the right flank, and stake his claim for the position of Chelsea’s centre forward for next season.

With Arsenal likely to drop points against Manchester City, Chelsea will take the field in yet another do-or-die encounter. Di Matteo’s men can reduce the gap between themselves and the Gunners to merely two points, if they win against Wigan, which they should if they are to remain in contention for a top-four finish this season.
