An injury-hit, struggling Chelsea side will welcome joint league leaders Manchester United on Sunday. In the last decade or so, the second meeting in a season between these two clubs has had the potential to decide the title race in either of the team’s favor – that’s not the case this time round, as Chelsea have a bigger fight on their hands for a top-four finish, while United continue to challenge for the Premiership title.
Such has been the season for Chelsea, that it’s near to impossible to determine which team will appear from the dugout at Stamford Bridge – the miserable bunch that almost lost to Swansea in the last game or the inspired men who defeated the invincible-looking Manchester City. Furthermore, the FA has stripped captain John Terry off the England captaincy. The court decided to postpone the hearing to July, after the Euro, but the weak FA couldn’t resist the media war cry, and gave in. “Innocent until proven guilty” – is not the case with John Terry.Presently, there’s a serious sense of injustice at Chelsea; Villas-Boas would ideally want his team to respond, but on the pitch.
On the other hand, Man United are level on points with Man City, at the top of the table, and have done really well after losing to Newcastle last month. Between then and now, the only game the Red Devils have lost has been at Anfield; that too in the dying minutes, despite playing reasonably well. Traditionally, United have always turned it on in the second half of the season, and if they have City within their sights after the upcoming games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, they could very well spoil Mancini’s party and make quite a few tattoos redundant!
While Chelsea have an added emotional angle to this game after one particular decision, United will play on the eve of the 54thAi??anniversaryAi??of Munich disaster.
Team News & Tactical Brief

After losing at the hands of Aston Villa in the last game of 2011, Chelsea started the new year reasonably well, but The Blues have now drawn their last two games against newly-promoted sides, Norwich and Swansea. More than the results, the performance left a lot to be desired, particularly at the Liberty Stadium. The machinery is collectively struggling, and it’s time for Villas-Boas to sort out the mess, one way or the other. There’s only so much the manager can do as far as selections/substitutions are concerned when quite a few important players have been ruled out with injury. Such is the crisis that even Malouda is starting in the midfield, following the absence of Ramires, Mikel and Lampard. The Chelsea #8 remains a doubtful against United, while Ramires, Mikel, Terry (all injured) and Cole (suspended) are definitely ruled out.
Cech will, of course, start in goal, but it’s not so straight forward in defence. New signing Gary Cahill has been brough in for such trying times. In the absence of Terry, he should ideally start alongside Luiz in the centre of defence. To counter the efficiency of Park or the threat of Nani, Andre would be better off deploying Ivanovic at right-back, rather than the inconsistent Bosingwa. Considering how lacklustre the first team has been of late, it would be better to inject some hunger back into the squad – and, what better than finally using the youngster who has been patiently waiting for his turn for eternity, behind Ashley Cole. Ryan Bertrand should start; not Bosingwa, not Ferriera, but Bertrand.
Although Lampard is still not fully fit, he can be expected to start such a big game. However, if he cannot, Chelsea would be better served by deploying Malouda on the left wing and using Mata centrally, ahead of a double-pivot of Romeu and Meireles. The creative Spaniard can exploit the space between United’s two blocks of four, and feed the forwards. Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge should take their usual positions on the pitch. A lot will depend on how Chelsea’s unusual defence stands up to the attacking threat of United, and whether the home team’s forward line is able to somehow make the ball cross the line behind De Gea.

The injury worries for United seem to be finally easing off, which is something that will delight the manager, especially with a tough fixture list coming up. With the team down to bare bones in the recent weeks, the manager has a much greater pool of players to choose from, for the game at Stamford Bridge. Nani and Wayne Rooney have trained for the past two days, while Ashley Young could also be back after being out for almost two months. Tom Cleverley is also on his way back and will travel to London, but Sir Alex is taking him as more of an insurance policy and the Englishman is expected to make his comeback in the reserves on Monday.
However, there is bad news in the goalkeeping department, as Anders Lindegaard could be out for 4-6 weeks following an ankle injury. De Gea is fit again after being ill for the game against Stoke, but the manager will make a choice between him and Amos just before the game. The other players who have beenAi??ruledAi??out are Phil Jones, Anderson, Michael Owen, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic with the latter two being ruled out for the rest of the season.
In terms of the tactics, Chelsea could once again see a familiar United line-up that defeated them in three of the four games last season including two in the Champions League. Carrick and Giggs are expected to start in central midfield with Park and Valencia taking up the duties on left and right flanks respectively. While Valencia will be hugging the touch line for the majority of the game, Park and Giggs could be swapping places time to time trying to create problems and confusion for the Chelsea defence.
Up front, Rooney is expected to start in his familiar role behind the front striker who could be either Welbeck or Chicharito. While the Englishman has been ahead of the Mexican in the pecking order, Sir Alex might also go for Hernandez up front considering his performances against the Blues last season and also the fact that he looked much sharper and closer to his best form in the game against Stoke on Tuesday. Either way, Hernandez is expected to be involved in the game at least as a substitute later in the game to run behind the tired Chelsea defence.
At the back, its going to be Evra, Ferdinand, Evans and one out of Smalling and Rafael as right back with David De Gea, if fit, in goal.
