For a club renowned for making awful decisions, and always getting the short end of the stick, this season has certainly come as a welcome surprise. A lot of it has inevitably been put down to just good fortune, and while it is true Chelsea FC finally seemed to have got Lady Luck to smile down on them, there have been a few laudable decisions that have made all the difference.
And examining just those decisions alone, is one heck of a novel way to review Chelsea’s most successful season ever.

1 ) Turning Frank Lampard Into a Defensive Midfielder
Who’d have thunk it? UnderAi??Villas-Boas, Frank Lampard was about as welcome as the drunk uncle who always made it to Thanksgiving. In a team purportedly overflowing with young blood and nimble-footed Brazilians and Iberians, Lampard was supposed to be the big, slow and clumsy oaf.
Except there was the tiny inconvenience of him scoring and saving the team whenever it needed him the most, making it impossible to discard him to the trash heap just yet. So while Villas-Boas wondered just how to do away with Frank Lampard altogether, Roberto Di Matteo cracked the code. He converted Frank Lampard into a defensive midfielder and got him to sit beside John Obi Mikel right in front of Chelsea’s suspect defense.
Frank isn’t a natural defensive midfielder, but while age and the changing nature of the game prevent him from being the best attacking midfielder out there, his uncanny football sense makes him perfect in the holding midfield area as the launching point of Chelsea’s counter attacks. He won’t score 20 goals from here, but he’s found his second calling.

2 ) Firing Andre Villa-Boas
It’s never smart to change horses midstream. but sometimes you just have to let them go. Under Villas-Boas, the team would not have won the FA Cup, the Champions League or even finished sixth in the Barclays Premier League. Enough Said.

3 ) Shelving Sturrdige For Ramires On the Right
Sturridge was at one point Chelsea’s highest scorer, so it takes a lot of guts to send him moping off to the bench and giving Ramires a say on the right. It work wonders because regardless of how spectacular Sturridge could be, he was someone who shot at the first sight of goal. And that’s polite-talk for saying he’s so selfish he can make Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben look like philanthropists. Ramires who deputed in Sturridge’s absence proved the former City player wouldn’t be missed, with or without Kalou in the side.

4 ) Signing Gary Cahill
At the start of the year, he was consigned to the Bolton bench against lowly Macclesfield. Less than 6 months later he’s a Champions League winner. When he was signed, it was accompanied by the usual chorus of groans. He was too similar to Terry, they said. He has a tendency to push forward like Terry, they said. He’s an impulsive defender just as Terry is, they said. Why would you buy a poor man’s Terry, they asked. Well for starters, we guessed Terry might knee someone in the back and get himself banned for the Champions League final. Who better to take his place than someone as much a carbon copy of Terry, as Cahill is.

5 ) Signing Juan Mata
Kudos to Andre Villas-Boas for a job well done, on this front. Without Mata we’d be staring at an entirely different kind of season. The Spaniard may have felt left out toward the end of the season, as Chelsea went into full-blown tortoise-shell defensive mode, but he’s a glimpse of what an exciting future the club has.

6 ) Getting The Cameo Stars To Do Their Bit
Villas-Boas made no attempt to hide what he thought of Kalou, Mikel, Ferreira and Lukaku. And while Lukaku barely saw any playing time under Roberto Di Matteo, the general feeling has been that the Italian has been kinder to them. Kalou’s career has been resurrected from the murky depths it wallowed in, and Mikel is now Chelsea’s toughest midfielder.

7 ) Shifting From the 4-3-3 to the 4-2-3-1
One could make the case that it was cowardly to go in for two holding midfielders, but it certainly did the trick. From being carved apart in that 4-3-3 formation with a high back-line, Chelsea went to holding off Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the 4-2-3-1 style. Not only did Lampard and Mikel add some muscle to the defense, Juan Mata was deployed in a more central role. With better players on the wing (read Hazard), this style could be a revelation.

8 ) Bringing On Torres Against Barcelona
When you’re defending so deep and so desperately, that Didier Drogba is actually your left back, then you know attacking the opposite goal is the last thought on anyone’s minds.
Bringing on Fernando Torres at left back, while Barcelona were desperately searching for their winner, was therefore was a stunning decision any way you cut it. The resulting goal courtesy an uninterrupted mile-long run by the Spaniard resurrected his career, the club’s morale and ended Barcelona’s fightback.

9 ) Sacrificing The League
Grapes are sour. It’ll be hard to claim Chelsea lost their chances of a 4th spot finish, only because they didn’t want it. But fielding a lesser team in the final few games of the Premier League, effectively surrendering without a fight, gave Chelsea’s Champions League final stars that additional day of rest. And a Didier Drogba running on a full tank is a terrifying proposition.

10 ) Parking The Airbus
Yes, it’s ugly and desperate and cynical. But it worked. Roman has won the trophy he’s always craved, albeit with the chastening reminder that his team tried his preferred style and failed miserably. It’s not easy to resist the opinions of the pundits, the officials, and that of your own boss, so kudos to Roberto Di Matteo and the powers-that-be in the dressing room for choosing to park the bus.
