Can Roberto Di Matteo Get The Better Of Steve Clark? (West Brom v Chelsea)

He led the team to promotion from the Championship and for a fleeting while it seemed like Di Matteo would continue the stellar work as he was named manager of the month in September 2010, after West Brom made their best ever start to a Premier League season. However, the good times wouldnai??i??t last for longer as West Brom then went on to garner unsatisfactory results for the next three months and the boardroom had seen enough of the Italian. Eventually they worked out a compensation with West Ham, as Clarke decided that joining West Ham under Gianfranco Zola was the right challenge for him at that moment. That stint largely yielded mixed results but he did enough for Liverpool FC to take notice and was appointed first team coach under Kenny Dalglish. As Dalglish garnered plaudits in the media for Liverpoolai??i??s resilient reversal of fortunes post Roy Hodgson, there were many within the club who were also crediting Clarke.

On 12^th May 2011, the duo signed improved three year contracts, but the season that followed was disastrous in every sense of the word. The club had spent a lot of money buying new players and were expected to qualify for the Champions League, but the signings simply werenai??i??t up to the mark and Liverpool ended up finishing 8^th. That summer saw Clarke depart yet another club until West Brom came calling; tt would be his first job as first team manager and today, they stand fifth in the table with 20 points in hand.

Chelsea are only projected as the winners here because of their superior quality in every position. However, a draw could equally be on the cards because of a fatigue-affected Chelsea side and also due to the fact that West Bromwich Albion are playing at home. Steve Clarke would no doubt settle for a draw if he knew that would be the outcome, but the approach would be to set themselves up for a win.
