Since the departure of Jose Mourinho and Rafael Benitez, Chelsea and Liverpool have had contrasting fortunes. Chelsea went on to win numerous cups, the League and the Champions League. Liverpool, however, have since struggled to reclaim top four spot; let alone return to their erstwhile days of glory. The Merseyside team may have had their aura dented by their recent struggles on the pitch but they nevertheless continued to present Chelsea with a challenge on the pitch. The records showed that Liverpool had beaten Chelsea on four previous league encounters coming into this game. However a less than satisfying league standing (12th) meant that Roberto di Matteoai??i??s Chelsea, who were second in the table, were still favourites to emerge with three points from the game.
A whole lot of attention was given to the fact that a former Liverpool favourite was on the Chelsea team sheet. It has been nearly two years since Fernando Torres made that controversial move from to Chelsea, but his lack of goals and woefully inadequate performances means that the Chelsea fans have yet to see him as one of their own, while those loyal to Liverpool perceive that as a celestial sign of his belonging to their club and theirs only.
Chelsea captain John Terry was on course to make his first start in the league after he had served his 4 match ban after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. Chelseaai??i??s inability to keep clean sheets in recent history suggested that the club was relieved to have their captain back in the side. Previous games that happened on the weekend saw Chelseaai??i??s title rivals at Manchester, both City and United, make stunning comebacks after finding themselves in difficult positions and now it was the turn of the European Champions to prove their title credentials.

First Half
Chelsea surprisingly dropped Gary Cahill from the line up, while Brazilian David Luiz was out of the game with Tonsillitis. This gave Spanish right back Cesar Azpilicueta a chance to make his mark upon a big game. Meanwhile for Liverpool, manager Brendan Rodgers sprang a surprise by going for a 3ai??i??4ai??i??1-2/ 3ai??i??5ai??i??2 formation with Andre Wisdom, Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger at the back. Slovakian strongman Martin Skrtel was out with a fever. Fullbacks Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson manned left and right flanks respectively.
The game kicked off after Stamford Bridge observed a minute of perfect silence as a tribute to many who perished in battle fighting for their nations. Captains Steven Gerrard and John Terry looked to be in good spirits at the toss as they exchanged a few words and shook hands with the officials. It was Liverpool who were seeing a lot of the ball in the first half as the Brendan Rodgers philosophy began to assert itself on the Stamford Bridge turf. Every time Chelsea got the ball, Liverpool seemed to revert to a back five with both the Johnson and Enrique dropping deep. It seemed like the tactics deployed by Rodgers was designed to force Chelsea to play narrow.
The cagey opening barely saw any goal mouth action in the first twelve minutes or so until Fernando Torres collected a long throw from Cech, skipped past two Liverpool players and passed it to Azpilicueta, whose teasing cross evaded every blue shirt that had galloped into the box. Chelsea were content to let Liverpool keep the ball in positions from where they couldnai??i??t inflict much damage. It also looked like Liverpool for their part were happy to keep the ball and play a slow possession game. Chelseaai??i??s quality however showed when they did get the ball, they moved it quickly and tried creating chances. A lung busting run with the ball from a motivated looking Torres forced Liverpool to concede a corner in the 19th minute. Juan Mata ran to the corner flag as per usual and delivered a sumptuous flighted ball in. John Terry saw his marker, Daniel Agger blocked off by Ivanovic and wriggled free to score a free header. Chelsea had barely kicked into second gear, but they had the goal.
The period after the first goal had both teams fighting it out at midfield. Luiz Suarez had barely seen much of the ball in the opening 25 minutes or so. Joe Allen in a first of what was to be many a time lost the ball to Hazard who turned past him in a flash and picked out Torres. The Spaniard couldnai??i??t make his chance count as he saw his shot blocked by Brad Jones. Liverpool responded in the 30th minute with a shot from Nuri Sahin but the effort didnai??i??t trouble Petr Cech as it went wide.
Minutes after that incident, as Chelsea tried to build an attack from the back, John Terry erroneously gave the ball away to Luiz Suarez. Desperate to cover for his mistake, the Chelsea captain went in for the ball again as Suarez began to advance forward. The resulting collision ended with Suarez taking a tumble and landing on John Terryai??i??s foot as the Chelsea captain winced in pain and stayed down while play continued. The tension among the Chelsea fans was palpable as Terry rarely stays down for a sustained period. This time however, it looked fairly serious. After a five minute break in proceedings, John Terry was stretchered off as a concerned looking di Matteo was forced to bring on Gary Cahill in his place.
The break seemed to have disturbed Liverpoolai??i??s concentration with the game moving into the five minute injury time period. First it was Andre Wisdom who let Oscar in after a silly error, but the young Brazilian couldnai??i??t capitalize. Chelsea then had a throw along Liverpoolai??i??s left flank. Juan Mata capitalized on a communication error between Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger and wriggled his way past them to get one on one with keeper Jones. Just as Stamford Bridge prepared to erupt in celebration and held its collective breath, the normally reliable Mata skied it over the crossbar. The first half had seen Liverpool keep the ball without hurting Chelsea much, while Chelsea seemed happy to let Liverpool stay in control and hurt Rodgersai??i?? team with whatever little possession they had.
The Second Half
It seemed like Joe Allen was a marked man in the game as Fernando Torres robbed the ball of the Liverpool midfielder who dragged him down cynically for a Chelsea free kick which was steered off to a subsequent corner. Torres again tried snatching the ball off Enrique but his challenge was adjudged a foul by referee Howard Webb and rightly so. Then it was Oscarai??i??s turn at winning the ball, he easily disposed Glen Johnson and tried getting past, but was elbowed down to the ground by the former Chelsea player who got a yellow card for his troubles. Hazard took the free kick which saw Fernando Torres rise and force Jones into making another save off the header.
The pattern also made it evident that Chelsea were now looking to take more initiative and werenai??i??t happy to let Liverpool have the ball at the back. Brendan Rodgers responded to the situation by bringing off Nuri Sahin and replacing him with youngster Suso in the 59th minute. Rodgers then brought about a change in team shape as Liverpool moved to a more recognizable 4ai??i??4ai??i??1ai??i??1 shape as Johnson moved into the left back position. This move in effect opened up the game as Chelsea continued to press high up the pitch. A combination of pressing, tired legs and waning concentration levels led to the game opening up for the first time with 30 minutes left to go on the clock.
Glen Johnson then found his verve as he drove in past Azpilicueta and put in a sharp cross. Chelseaai??i??s Gary Cahill was on the spot to make a timely clearance. On the other end, Ryan Bertrand was finding himself in space along Liverpoolai??i??s right and Mata put a delectable ball. The young full back found himself in acres of space to cross the ball in, and put in a perfectly weighted low cross for Fernando Torres to pounce upon. The striker however fell just short of the ball and saw it go behind him into space. Torres found himself short yet again as a brilliantly taken free kick from Oscar grazed the hair on his head before going out of play.
Suarez then latched on to the ball after Hazard lost it high up the pitch. He had Andre Wisdom in support but Cahill cleared it for a corner before Liverpool managed to make the opening count. They eventually made up for it when Jamie Carragher showed previously unbeknownst dexterity to flick the ball on for Luiz Suarez who found himself free after Ramires got caught ball watching. With United and City both having registered comebacks from losing positions, the same challenge was now staring Chelsea in the face with the score tied at 1 ai??i?? 1.
Liverpool threatened again as captain Steven Gerrard started to exert his influence upon the pitch by lobbing a 40 yard pass to Luiz Suarez who looked set to convert after expertly taking it down upon his chest. But Gary Cahill was alert to the danger yet again and stole the ball off the Uruguayan who was left frustrated. Chelsea who had made their now staple substitution of Victor Moses for Oscar decided to bring off the lively Fernando Torres for Daniel Sturridge in the 81st minute.
Steven Gerrard once again put Sterling through with a long pass hit along the ground, the 17 year old then crossed it for Suso whose tame attempt missed the goal altogether. As the game swung like a pendulum from end to end, Chelsea earned their final corner where the ball found Branislav Ivanovicai??i??s head before going out for a goal kick. The gameai??i??s final chance perhaps had Liverpool supporters wishing ai???man of the matchai??i?? Enrique was right footed as he found himself free after some good work by Luiz Suarez who set him up.
It ended 1 ai??i?? 1 at Stamford Bridge with both teams left feeling they could have done much better.
The Aftermath
More work to do for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers after the opening 11 games has seen them register just two wins so far. However, Rodgers would have earmarked this fixture as a difficult one the Merseyside team will no doubt be satisfied at stopping this Chelsea side with a 1 ai??i?? 1 draw. There is no doubt though, that Liverpool on the evidence of this game and many others this season, do need players who can take more of an initiative in attack.
Chelsea, on the other hand, will have realized that winter is finally upon them. The six players who play in midfield and attack for the blues, have played every game relentlessly and there can be no doubt about the fact that fatigue is beginning to set in. The Chelsea faithful will take positives from a very solid performance by Cesar Azpilicueta but questions will again be asked of his compatriot Fernando Torres who goes yet another game without a goal. That said, Torres was heavily involved in this particular game anyway and had a few chances. But would the Torres of old taken them? The answer probably is yes.
