1. Two rounds of fixtures
As the month of March starts, so too does the season run-in.
With 13 games to play in two months, more for some teams, the games are going to come thick and fast. With this in mind, the next seven days sees two important rounds of fixtures. Whilst things will not be decided for at least another 6 weeks, the form which teams show now will go a long way to determining where they finish in this seasonai??i??s NPower Championship.
2. Another Friday night, another Promotion battle
After Reading beat Burnley 1-0 on a Friday night two weeks ago, the Football league have decided to give supporters another perfect start to the weekend by arranging Hull Cityai??i??s trip to Blackpool for this Friday night.
Both sides are pushing for promotion, with Blackpool sitting fourth and the Tigers in 9th, although Nick Barmbyai??i??s men do have two games in hand on some of their rivals.
In their first meeting, a superb Gary Taylor-Fletcher goal gave the Seasiders the points at the KC Stadium. With home advantage, we expect Ian Hollowayai??i??s men to complete the double and briefly move up to third.
3. Warnock to make home bow against leaders
Neil Warnock will make his home debut as Leeds United boss when leaders Southampton visit Elland Road.
Back on the opening day of the season on a sun-filled August afternoon, the reverse fixture saw the newly-promoted shock Leeds with a 3-1 success. Since that day, the Saints havenai??i??t looked back, as they have stormed the division, hardly leaving the top two positions. After last weekai??i??s 3-0 success at Watford, Nigel Adkinsai??i?? men currently sit a point clear at the top, although second-placed West Ham do have a game in hand.
On the other hand, Leeds havenai??i??t enjoyed the best of seasons. Tipped by many to feature in the promotion race, the Whites have been dogged by inconsistency, so much so that manager Simon Grayson was relieved of his duties last month. In his place came Warnock, who drew his first official game in charge last weekend with a 0-0 draw at Portsmouth, to leave the Yorkshire club 4 points off the play-offs.
Both sides posses plenty of firepower, including the leagueai??i??s two top-scorers in Rickie Lambert and Ross McCormack. But, we at TheHardTackle believe the Saints superior defence should see the leaders gain another 3 points in their march towards the Premier League.
4. Wembley heroes entertain Hammers
After their heartbreaking penalty-shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Carling Cup final last weekend, Cardiff City return to league action by hosting second place West Ham United.
The Bluebirds gained alot of new admirers with the part they played in one of Wembleyai??i??s classic finals. Now though, they must put it all behind them and fully concentrate on their seasonai??i??s main goal; to do what their rivals Swansea City did last year and reach the Premier League.
A recent run of 3 defeats in 4 league games means they have dropped to sixth place. The visit of Sam Allardyceai??i??s Hammers, followed by a trip to Brighton on Wednesday, represents a perfect way to return to winning ways in the league, whilst also exorcising the memories of last weekai??i??s cruel defeat.
5. Foxes on the prowl
After early season troubles under Sven Goran-Eriksson, new boss Nigel Pearson finally seems to have steadied the ship, with the Foxes having won their last four games, including an excellent FA Cup win away to Premier League Norwich City.
Leicester currently occupy 12th place in the table, and are eight points off sixth, but with a wealth of talent at their disposal and momentum building, they could yet force their way into the play-offs.
This week, the Foxes entertain Midlandsai??i?? rivals Coventry City and then face a trip to struggling Bristol City. Pearsonai??i??s men are more than capable of picking up six points, a maximum which would further enhance their play-off claims.
6. Robins in freefall
Leicesterai??i??s opponents on Tuesday night, Bristol City, are in somewhat of a freefall.
One point from six games, coupled with improvement from both Coventry City and Nottingham Forest, means Derek McInnesai??i?? men have been dragged back into a relegation battle. Only Portsmouthai??i??s 10-point deduction for going into administration has kept the Robins outside of the bottom three.
The problem City have is scoring goals, having only scored three times in the six-game period. The loss of star striker Nicky Maynard to West Ham United during the transfer window hasnai??i??t helped.
This week, the Robins problems are set to grow as they face two in-form sides. First up is a trip to Ipswich Town, who have won 4 of their last 5 games. Then comes the visit of Leicester City, a team who are on a four-match winning streak.
Things seemed to start well for McInnes when he took over from former boss Keith Millen in October. But this recent run has undone all that good work. With Forest and Coventry having home games this weekend which they are capable of winning, against Doncaster Rovers and Crystal Palace respectively, no less than 3 points from the next two games is needed if City are to remain outside the relegation places.
7. Blues look to pile pressure on AVB
Tuesday night sees Birmingham City in FA Cup action as they host Chelsea in a 5th round replay.
Two weeks ago the Blues produced a fine performance to lead for most of the game, only for Daniel Sturridge to force a replay. Since then, pressure has been building on Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas following poor league performances as well as defeat to Napoli in the Champions League.
Having already knocked out Premier League opponents in the shape of Wolves and with a full house at St Andrews, Birmingham could inflict even more pain on AVB on Tuesday evening and set-up a quarter-final tie at home to Leicester City.
8. Robbie set for Seaside stint?
The former Anfield hitman, who was nicknamed ai???Godai??i?? by the Kop after netting 183 goals for the Reds, has most recently had spells in both Australia and Thailand, was all set for a move to Indiaai??i??s new PLS, a football version of the popular cricket IPL. But, with the tournament delayed, Fowler was left in limbo.
He returned to the UK as a free agent and declared his interest in looking for a new club, so in stepped Blackpool. On Thursday afternoon, Seasidersai??i?? boss Ian Holloway confirmed that Fowler had trained that morning, with a view to signing a permanent deal. Although a deal is yet to be agreed, Holloway added that the striker impressed and is close to full fitness.
With veteran Kevin Phillips already leading the line, the addition of 36-year old Fowler, who previously played for Cardiff in the Championship, would make the Blackpool frontline the oldest in the division, but also one of the most feared.
9. Adam Hammill
Another ex-Liverpool player coming back to The Championship is Adam Hammill.
The former reds youth player joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2011, but after finding his first-team opportunities limited, the winger has this week signed on-loan for Tony Mowbrayai??i??s promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.
After failing to break into the Liverpool first team set-up, Hammill enjoyed a successful loan spell at Barnsley, before sealing a permanent move to the Yorkshire club. Fast, skilful and equally adept with both feet, Hammill netted 13 times for the Tykes, many of which were long distance strikes. His form caught the eye of Wolvesai??i?? boss Mick McCarthy, who triggered a A?500,000 buy-out clause to take him to Molineux.
Now, after the 24-year oldai??i??s career has stalled, he will be looking to get back on track at Boro. With the Teesiders struggling to find the net on a consistent basis and Hammill keen to impress, the loan could prove to be an inspired move for all parties.
10. Can new star set Posh on goal trail?
Last weekend, Peterborough Unitedai??i??s record signing scored on his debut to net a last minute equaliser at Doncaster Rovers.
Following on from a 3-0 win at home to Bristol City the week before, Posh were favourites to win against bottom club Donny. However, after Rovers had taken the lead, Posh had Tyrone Barnett, a A?1.1m signing from Crawley Town, to thank for rescuing a point.
After scoring 14 times for Crawley in League Two this season, Barnett immediately impressed new boss Darren Ferguson. The striker will almost certainly make his first two starts for his new club this week when Posh travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday, then play host to Millwall on Tuesday.
With a proven goalscorer back in the ranks, having lost former hitmen Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McLean in the last year, will finally see a return of goals, goals, goals to London Road?
