A brand new season of the preeminent club competition in the world kicks off this week when thirty two teams across Europe ai??i?? some seasoned veterans, some making their debuts ai??i?? will begin the long arduous quest to be titled the best team in the continent come May 2013. As always, the first step in the journey is navigating through the group stage. Even though it has been criticized in the past for being boring and predictable, the stage has seen some major scalps over the years like Manchester United in the past season.
This season is set to be no different as the group stage draw last month has thrown together a number of big teams and paved way for what should prove to a tricky passage to the knockout rounds for certain clubs. With Matchday 1 looming large on the horizon, TheHardTackle previews the eight fixtures to be played on Tuesday night in Groups A-D.
Group A
Dinamo Zagreb vs FC Porto
Stadium Maksimir, Zagreb
Head to Head: The clubs have met in twice in two legged ties in Europe ai??i?? once in 1983/84 Cups Winners Cup 1st round and once in 1998/99 Champions League group stages ai??i?? with all the matches finishing in favour of the home team.
Match Background: After the nightmarish performance in last seasonai??i??s group stages, when they finished with zero points and a goal difference of -19 and thereby earning the dubious distinction of worst performers in the tournamentai??i??s history, the Croatian champions Dinamo will be out to prove a point (actually winning some might be more important). First up for them is the Champions League perennials Porto. While the Portuguese champions may have weakened considerably since the Europa League win in 2011 due to departures of key personnel, players and manager, they still remain a quality side under the stewardship of Vitor Pereira.
Form: Both teams are unbeaten in their respective domestic leagues so far this season. Dinamo have won six out of their eight league fixture and sit pretty at top of the table while Porto come of the back of a hard fought victory against Olhanense.
Key Men: Dinamo will rely on veteran centre half Tonel to marshal the defense and keep Porto at bay. The former Sporting Lisbon man will need no added motivation to perform in this fixture. For Porto, the big money summer signing Jackson Martinez will look to get his Champions League career off to a flier by scoring a goal or two against a defense which proved to be embarrassingly porous last season.
THT Prediction: Dinamo 0-2 Porto
Paris Saint-Germain FC vs FC Dynamo Kyiv
Parc des Princes, Paris
Head to Head: The two teams first met in 1994/95 Champions League group stage when the French side were victorious both home and away. The Ukrainians though exacted revenge when they knocked PSG out in 2008/09 UEFA Cup quarter-final.
Match Background: Few teams have had made as much noise as PSG in the recently concluded summer transfer window thanks to the benevolence of its Qatari owners. Armed with virtually a blank cheque, manager Carlo Ancelotti has significantly bolstered his squad with the likes of Zlatan IbrahimoviAi??, Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi for the clubai??i??s first Champions League campaign in seven years. Dynamo Kyiv in comparison are more frequent participants in the competitionai??i??s group stages but will still have their work cut out in order to get something from this opening fixture.
Form: PSGai??i??s form has been patchy this season with the new signings taking time to settle in. After three disappointing draws to start off their league campaign, the Parisians have notched up consecutive victories in their last two league encounters against Lille and Toulouse. Dynamo too have suffered a couple of setbacks in the league this season including the loss to rival Shakhtar Donetsk just before the international break.
Key Men: All eyes on Tuesday night at Parc des Princes will be on Zlatan IbrahimoviAi?? making his PSG debut in the tournament in which he has never quite been able to make telling impact. The man in charge of ensuring Ibrahimovic and co fire blanks will be veteran shot-stopper Oleksandr Shovkovskiy, who is the only remaining member in either team from the 94/95 clash.
THT Prediction: PSG 2-1 Dynamo Kyiv
Group B
Montpellier HAi??rault SC vs Arsenal FC
Stade de la Mosson, Montpellier
Head to Head: This is the first ever competitive fixture between the two sides.
Match Background: Montpellier were the surprise champions of Ligue 1 last season and consequently find themselves in the Champions League for the first time. Lack of prior European experience meant a place in Pot 4 in the draw and hence a tough draw. They start the campaign with a daunting fixture against the mighty Arsenal, the club which cherry-picked striker Olivier Giroud from the French champions in the summer. The French international though has not had the brightest start to his Gunners career and would be eagerly anticipating the opportunity to strut his stuff in a more familiar environs.
Form: With a solitary win and three defeats in five Ligue 1 matches, it is safe to say Montpellierai??i??s defense of their crown is not going according to plan. Worryingly for the Montpellier faithful, the club is yet to keep a single clean sheet this season and conceded three against Reims last Friday. Itai??i??s far from the ideal preparation before welcoming a team which pumped half a dozen goals this weekend against Southampton. Apart from the goal scoring prowess, Arsenal boast of a mean defense as well which has conceded only one in four matches this season.
Key Men: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, the 23 year old Montpellier central defender, has already attracted the attentions of a number of top clubs in Europe including the team he will line up against on Tuesday. A commanding display from the French international would not go amiss. For Arsenal, Lukas Podolski, back in Champions League for the first time since leaving Bayern, will be looking to maintain his goal-scoring streak after bagging in the last two games.
THT Prediction: Montpellier 0-2 Arsenal
Olympiacos FC vs FC Schalke 04
Karaiskakis Stadium, Piraeus
Head to Head: This is the first competitive fixture between the two teams.
Match Background: Olympiacos, the powerhouse of Greek football, are making their 14th appearance in Champions League and will be looking to emulate their own feats in 2007/08 and 2009/10, the seasons in which they successfully qualified for the knockout stages. The Greek champions will look to avoid last seasonai??i??s start to the campaign when they slumped to a home loss to Marseille, their only European defeat in last six matches at Piraeus. The defeat would ultimately cost them dear as the French side pipped them to the 2nd spot in the group by a single point. Schalke are back in the competition after their heroics in 2010/11 when they made it all the way to the semifinals. The German club in their fifth appearance in the competition is still searching for an opening day victory.
Form: The Greeks are perfect in their domestic league with three wins out of as many matches. Schalke too have made a decent start with winning twice in the league in three outings and progressing comfortably to round 2 of the German Cup.
Key Men: Olympiacos captain Vasilios Torosidis is a lynchpin for both club and country and the right backai??i??s performance will hold the key to how the team fares in the competition. Schalke have loaned Ibrahim Afellay for the season from Barcelona and the Dutch winger should relish the more starring on offer here than at Camp Nou for the last season and a half.
THT Prediction: Olympiacos 3-1 Schalke
Group C
MA?laga CF v FC Zenit St Petersburg
La Rosaleda, MA?laga
Head to Head: This is the first competitive fixture between the two teams.
Match Background: MA?laga are making a debut appearance in the tournament on the back of a summer filled with financial uncertainties. After spending lavishly last season – more than either Real or Barca ai??i?? the club has been crippled by a number of high profile departures, which threaten to undermine their maiden Champions League campaign. Still there is enough sprinkling of quality in the side to mount a serious challenge to qualify from the group stage. Bear in mind, the team has only conceded thrice in nine European home games. Up against them on Matchday 1 are the Russian champions Zenit, who in stark contrast to their opponents have generously splashed the cash in the transfer market this summer. The capture of Hulk and Alex Witsel, two of the most coveted players in the continent, for an eye-watering combined fee in excess of A?60 million has catapulted them to the position of strong favourites to win the group and progress much further in the competition. Zenit though are notoriously lousy travelers in Europe, with only one away win in the competition history and has lost in all four of their previous visits to Spain.
Form: In spite of their financial woes, Malaga has made a dream start to the season and presently sit pretty at second in the La Liga table with ten points out of available 12. In those four games the defense has conceded only once. Zenitai??i??s preparation for the game has taken a jolt when they lost at home in weekend to league leaders Terek Grozny in what was their second defeat in last three games.
Key Men: MA?laga boasts in their ranks one of the brightest prospects in Spanish footballer in the 20 year old attacking midfielder Isco. It will be interesting to see how the youngster handles the obvious step up in the level of quality that the competition will provide. Hulk, one half of Zenitai??i??s marquee summer signings, will be expected to boss around defenders in attack and use that venomous left foot to full use.
THT Prediction: MA?laga 1-1 Zenit
AC Milan vs RSC Anderlecht
San Siro, Milan
Head to Head: The teams have previously met in two seasons in the competition before ai??i?? once in 1993/94 when both matches finished goalless and then again 2006/07 season when KakA? inspired the Rossoneri to victory in both legs. As the Rossoneri faithful must have noticed, in both seasons Milan went on to lift the trophy.
Match Background: Even with such favourable omens, it would take a brave man to back Milan to win the competition this season. The Serie A runners-up has suffered a torrid summer in the transfer market with departures of stalwarts such as IbrahimoviAi??, Thiago Silva and Antonio Cassano and a spate of retirements. Thanks to their past pedigree in the competition, they have managed to retain their top seed status and have thus avoided drawing any of the other heavyweights. Even so qualifying from the group stage can prove to be a tricky affair for the Rossoneri and hence it is imperative that they get off to a winning start at home against possibly the weakest team in the group. Having said that, the Belgian champions Anderlecht are no pushovers and have previously surprised a number of big teams in past editions of the competition. Heading into the tie, John van den Bromai??i??s men must believe this is the best chance theyai??i??ll have of claiming a famous victory against the mighty Milan.
Form: Milan has suffered an atrocious start to the season with the side losing the first two home games in Serie A for the first time since 1930-31. Even more worryingly for the Italian club, in both the matches, against Sampdoria and Atalanta respectively, they have fired blanks. Anderlecht, who too are not exactly flying high domestically, have drawn four out of their seven Belgian Pro League games.
Key Men: New signing Giampaolo Pazzini has been the lone spark for Milan this season and fired a hattrick against Bologna in the clubai??i??s only win this season. The Belgian side has a number of talented youngsters in their ranks with Cheikhou KouyatAi?? probably being the best of the lot. It is reported that a number of top clubs including Arsenal are keeping tabs on the 22 year old Senegalese defender.
THT Prediction: Milan 2-1 Anderlecht
Group D
Borussia Dortmund vs AFC Ajax
Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund
Head to Head: The teams met in 1995/96 quarter-finals when Ajax knocked out their German opponents on a 3-0 aggregate score.
Match Background: Drawn in by far the toughest group of the competition, both the German champions and their Dutch counterpart could really do with a positive result on Tuesday night. A draw will not suit either and hence we can expect an unusually open game for a Matchday 1 tie. Ajax should draw inspiration from the stat that Dortmund are winless on their soil against teams from Netherlands. On the brighter side, Dortmund would be relatively pleased with the fact that they managed to retain most of the core group of players, Shinji Kagawa excepted, who helped them to the league and cup double last season. Nevertheless, given the quality of the two other teams in the group, it will be a stiff challenge for either team to improve upon last seasonai??i??s performance (when Dortmund and Ajax finished 4th and 3rd in their respective groups).
Form: Dortmund have made a steady start to the season with two home wins and an away draw in the Bundesliga. A comprehensive 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the weekend will give them confidence heading into this fixture. Ajax have been scoring freely this season in the Eredivisie (which frankly speaking is not renowned for teams with watertight defenses) with 17 goals in five fixtures.
Key Men: Mario GAi??tze, a youth product of Dortmund academy, is the golden boy of German football from whom big things are expected soon. Ajax too boast of an equally highly ratedAi?? youngster in 20 year old Danish attacker Christian Eriksen.
THT Prediction: Dortmund 3-2 Ajax
Real Madrid CF vs Manchester City FC
Estadio Santiago BernabAi??u, Madrid
Head to Head: This is the first competitive fixture between the two teams.
Match Background: This is the undoubted glamour tie of the matchday. For the first time in the competitionai??i??s history, the Spanish champions have been thrown together in the same group as the English champions. The nine time winners Real would be hoping to use their tournament pedigree to quell the threat of the English upstarts. City on the other would want to lay down a marker for rest of teams in the tournament and what better way to do it than by beating Real in their own den. While a draw may not be the worst result for either side, a result would leave the vanquished sweating over their fortunes in the group featuring two other national champions. Hence, donai??i??t be surprised if the much anticipated tie end up being a cagey affair in which either would loathe to commit a mistake.
Form: Realai??i??s form this season can be termed inconsistent at best and wretched at worst. After their triumph over Barcelona in the Supercopa, Real has slumped to two defeats in the first four league matches of the season, allowing Barcelona to open up a eight point lead over them. City are faring slightly better in their first Premier League title defense with two wins out of four and were unlucky not to come away with all three points in a challenging encounter against Stoke at the weekend.
Key Men: All eyes on BernabAi??u will be trained on one Cristiano Ronaldo, the man who claimed he was ai???unhappyai??i?? after Realai??i??s previous home game. The former Manchester United player has scored four times in Manchester derbies of past and has been sent off twice. Ronaldoai??i??s former teammate at United, Carlos TAi??vez has looked sharp for City this season and his endless hassling and harrying can cause problem to the Madrid backline.
THT Prediction: Real 1-0 Man City.
