Bayern Munich are playing Borussia Dortmund in the finals of DFB Pokal 2011-12 on the 12th of May and it is extremely important for Bayern to win the competition to be in a winning shape ahead of facing Chelsea for the Champions League final at Allianz Arena. But will the Bavarians be able to get the better of a team that has kept them at back-foot for four games in succession?
A Champions League triumph at oneai??i??s home stadium is a feat that hasnai??i??t been achieved since 1965 and Bayern Munich are now a game away from pulling it off. They managed to book their place in the Champions League finals after an enthralling penalty shootout against nine time champions Real Madrid. With a heavily wounded Chelsea side standing in their way, it is fair to say that the Bavarians are favourites to win this tie.
A month ago, Munich was buzzing with talk of a possible treble. Another thrilling shootout victory over Borussia MAi??nchengladbach in the semi final of the DFB Pokal meant that Bayern would face off against then league title rivals Borussia Dortmund in Germanyai??i??s top cup competition. The Bundesliga title was also well within reach at this point of time, with fans and pundits looking forward to the title decider at Signal Iduna Park. Unfortunately for the traveling fans, Bayern were undone by a resolute Dortmund side, treble hopes were shattered and it was going to take a huge mental revamp to ensure that Juup Heynckesai??i?? side could beat Real Madrid.
The Bavarians did not fail to raise the bar. With the title out of reach, Heynckes was allowed the luxury of resting most of his squad prior to both ties of the Champions League semi finals. Following a victory at home, Bayern were pushed to the limit at the Santiago Bernabeu as the tie went all the way to penalties. Unsurprisingly, the Germans showed their composure, slotted home 3 out of 5 penalties and kept their hopes of a fifth Champions League triumph alive.
Most of Heynckesai??i?? attention will be directed towards the final of Europeai??i??s elite club competition but disregarding the DFB Pokal final will be blasphemous. More than just winning the German cup, Bayern will want to put an end to their troubles against the German champions. Die Borussen have been a thorn in Bayernai??i??s last two seasons, winning all of the four meetings between the two clubs.
Bayern’s lessons from the triumph over Real Madrid
Bayern went in to this tie knowing that placing any hope on their defensive abilities would be suicidal. They attacked the Real Madrid back line with all they had and it paid dividends. Shockingly, Mario Gomez struggled in both the legs, but this is something that has happened consistently against Dortmund. To rely on Super Mario to provide the goods up front will also be another folly on the part of Heynckes. The exclusion of Gomez is completely unnecessary and it will go down to how the big German is used in the final of the DFB Pokal. As opposed to using him as a finisher, his usage as a target man who can help in initiating attacks is a seemingly better option.
David Alaba has been a revelation at left back over the past few weeks and he grew from strength to strength over the two legs. Some might blame him for giving away Bayernai??i??s first goal in the second leg, but that would be far too harsh on the teenager. His forays gave Alvaro Arbeloa a torrid time in both legs, and he could well have had an assist to his name. Dortmund werenai??i??t too comfortable against the versatile Austrian either and will require Lukas Piszczek to have another extraordinary night at the Olympiastadion.

Toni Kroos was influential beyond a level, understandably so, playing almost as a box-to-box midfielder against Real Madrid. Although he was deployed to play just off the striker, Kroos was all over the pitch, helping out in every possible way. He has most often been used in the center of midfield and has performed commendably, but these two matches against Madrid have shown that his game can be taken to a whole new level.
Breaking the Dortmund jinx
As expected, both the ties between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund proved to be very close encounters. The last meeting between these two German giants could have ended very differently had Arjen Robben converted that dreaded penalty. Even the first face off this season was very tightly matched and Dortmund required a late goal from wonderkid, Mario GAi??tze to seal the deal. With injuries not being an issue for either team at the moment and the Bundesliga having been settled, both teams should be expected to go into this final with full strength squads.
The first threat that Heynckes will have to deal with is that of a diminutive Japanese star, Shinji Kagawa. The 23-year-old attacker will look to drop into the little holes between Bayernai??i??s defense and midfield, and build attacks with his lightning pace from there. To expect either of the central defenders to deal with him would be completely stupid. This is where the use of Kroos in an attacking role, thus facilitating both Luis Gustavo and Bastian Schweinsteiger in midfield will be crucial. Gustavo will have to pull off exactly what he did against Madrid and be just as dirty as necessary in order to stop Kagawa.
Dortmund have recently witnessed the sudden rise to form of central midfielder, Ai??lkay GA?ndoAYan. The man from Gelsenkirchen has been a revelation over the past month, pulling the strings in Dortmundai??i??s midfield and adding a whole new attacking dimension to Kloppai??i??s two man central midfield. Knowing GA?ndoAYanai??i??s inconsistency, Bayern could possibly neglect the threat that he poses and end up hurting themselves.
If Kroos does play behind the striker, it will be his duty to ensure that GA?ndoAYan isnai??i??t allowed to move higher up the field, a job he will complete with top results. On the other hand, the use of Thomas Muller could backfire if GA?ndoAYan has a good night. Muller will undoubtedly be a lot less defensive, forcing Schweinsteiger and Kroos to deal with both Kagawa and GA?ndoAYan ai??i?? a job that will prove to be exponentially harder. Once again, the scenario seems to work in favour of Toni Kroos in that attacking midfield role.

The next cause for worry is the problem posed by right back, Lukas Piszczek. His presence was strongly felt in the latest league meeting as he performed both his defensive and offensive duties with utmost diligence. He nullified the threat posed by Franck RibAi??ry and continually threatened Alaba. Bayern will require Alaba to be at his best for the final, while Ribery will have to do his fair share of defending to keep both Piszczek and Kuba under control down that left flank. Assuming that Kuba is replaced by the returning GAi??tze, Alaba could be in for one of the biggest tests of his life and Riberyai??i??s experience will surely be required to help out the Austrian.
It seems fair to assume that Bayernai??i??s right side of defense will be fairly relaxed thanks to the current drop in form of Kevin GroAYkreutz. Robben will need to make full use of Marcel Schmelzerai??i??s inability to efficiently defend and attack, by launching quick attacks when the Dortmund left back is out of position. Also, knowing GroAYkreutzai??i??s knack of falling back for Schmelzer, Philipp Lahm will need to be at his industrious best by aiding Robben in attack.
There is no doubt that every player will be able to make a difference on May 12th, but the above battles seem most important. From what weai??i??ve seen over this season, this game will most surely be decided by the ability of both teamsai??i?? wings to effectively attack and defend in unison. The use of Kroos in a position higher up the field could well be the deciding factor, since Dortmundai??i??s central midfield pairing hasnai??i??t met such a versatile midfielder and will undoubtedly struggle to deal with him. To write off either team at this moment would be very wrong but the cup traveling back to Bavaria on the 12th of May seems more likely than ever before.
