Over the years, Arsene Wenger has maintained his own set of transfer rules, which do not equate to a fan’s rationale thinking. He has kept the economic side of things in mind before splurging cash on players. Andre Arshavin, three years back, was probably an exception to the rule, as far as his Winter Transfer Policy is concerned. The Russian was an instant hit at the club but failed to live up to his tremendous talent over the years (his stats speak otherwise though). With a fight for Champions League place very much on, Arsene needs to make the necessary “re-arrangement” in this transfer window before it shuts down in about a month.

Marouane Chamakh had started his Arsenal career in superb fashion, banging in the goals in the absence of van Persie, but with the return of the current captain, Chamakh has completely lost his ‘mojo’, few even doubt about him ever having one. The summer signing of Ju Young Park has been the most bafflingAi??acquisition of Arsene in recent times. Experts and Fans alike have wondered the actual reason behind the Korean’s ‘zero’ contribution to league football this season. The Korean, who is quite a prolific scorer at International level, is yet to play a minute of league football for Arsenal. The manager has thrown the same monotonous “He is adapting to English Football” beatsAi??for quite some time leaving fans frustrated.

Such has been the dearth of ‘quality players’ in the market, Arsenal has been linked only to Lucas Podolski and Salomon Kalou this winter. Both the moves look unlikely to happen as of now. With the Euros so close by and Podolski unsure about a regular starting place at Arsenal, the German has clearly stated the move is “impossible” right now and that it can wait “till the summer”. Kalou’s move looks even more unlikely with Chelsea having a ‘noticeable crisis’ in the scoring department with out-of-form Torres and an ‘aging’ Drogba being given the steering wheel to drive the car at The Bridge.
The biggest and the most exciting move so far has been that of the return of Arsneal’s favorite son, Thierry ‘The King’ Henry. Not only does the master bring in ‘more scoring options’, he brings in ‘loads of Premiership experience’, a winning-mentality, leadership skills and insane levels of intelligence which can still be very handy for the Gunners. As van Persie, Szczesny, Theo and Sagna, among others have already spoken about the importance of Thierry’s “temporary loan deal“, but some fear that this might be Arsenal’s only signing of the transfer window.

He hasn’t set the stage on fire with his scoring yet, but with maturity and experience he is sure to help out his captain on that front. In his absence, most of the attacking duties will lie on Andrei Arshavin. The Russian has been dreadfully off-color for quite some time now, his return-to-form can be a major boost for Arsenal. He is capable of match-winning moments, he needs to walk that extra mileAi??for his team. Ryo Miyachi is another option on that side of the field but he might be sent to Fulham on a loan deal, as the rumor-mill is saying. If looked at with a practical mindset, Arsenal needs to buy one in this position, unfortunately there hasn’t been any rumors floating as to who can be a probable signing. He has played Thomas Vermaelen, Francis Coquelin and Ignasi Miquel in that position sparingly in the absence of the fit Full Backs over the last month or so. Not having a specialist Full Back can lead to moments like the one against Fulham a few days back when Coquelin completely missed marking his man, not a fault of a midfielder without ‘Full Back Positional Sense’. The injury to Vermaelen means Arsene is trying his luck with a right-footed midfielder and Reserves Center Back to play at that important position.

The names thrown in the market range from former Chelsea manAi??Wayne BridgeAi??to Lyon’s talented Aly Cissokho. The first one looks like a Sylvester-ish signing with the Englishman way past his ‘golden days’, quite a possibility with Wenger’s track-record. The second one looks far-fetched considering the return-from-injury news of Gibbs. Cissokho is more of a “permanent transfer solution” than a make-shift arrangement. Recently, there has been talks of a possible signing of former United man Kieran Richardson from Sunderland. A short-term loan deal is quite a possibility.
All said and done, it is quite likely that Wenger won’t buy for this position at all and make do with Coquelin-kind-of-arrangements till Gibbs return back. Given the Englishman’s injury record, Coquelin might have a long run at that position, no wonder a contract extension was seen some hours back.
