Sometimes we are so engrossed in the competitiveness in the football world that a few romantic stories tend to be ignored in favor of the ‘bigger’ picture. Swanseaai??i??s incredible record in the Premier League, Levanteai??i??s impossible climb to the top of the table in La Liga and the champagne football exhibited by Athletic Bilbao against the Premier League leaders are few examples . But, the most romantic story of the year has to be the rise of APOEL FC.
This week, the team from Nicosia (whereai??i??s that on the map?) host the most successful club in the history of European football and arguably one of best club sides this season to continue their dream run in the Champions League with the hope of making themselves the first club from Cyprus to make it to the semi-finals of Europeai??i??s most prestigious tournament.
Make no mistake, the Champions League is considered by many, including the worldai??i??s finest coaches such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho as the toughest tournament in the world and may be, they have a valid reason to say so (keeping that argument for another day). To make it so far in the competition, teams need more than just plain luck. APOEL may have been lucky but none can complain that they were undeserving. Champions League nights are more about discipline and exceptional football intelligence rather than individual talent or wild attacks.
Their strategy has been spot on through out the season. Defending deep and resolute away from home, scoring an early goal at home and then maintaining their lead has been the hall-mark of their stellar campaign. The Cypriots have made their home a fortress in this yearai??i??s Champions League and their victory against Lyon proves the aforementioned point. APOEL has deserved its place, ending the hopes of many teams early in the Champions League.
Watching them play against Lyon at their home was a joy to the senses. The heart always beats for the under dog, and APOEL with the odds stacked against them, with nothing to lose, displayed levels of maturity and patience that was originally expected from Lyon. Even in the nerve-jangling penalty shoot-out, APOEL’s body language and confidence was quite visible compared to their French opponents.
“I wasn’t afraid at any time during the course of the match. I believed that we would advance after the end of regulation time,” APOEL defender Savvas Poursaitides commented after the match. “We are a very good team and with these wonderful fans beside us, we’re not afraid of anything… All the players believed that we could beat (Lyon).”
The defense is compact. The back four are always close to each other, looking out for each other and are difficult to split open. They move in sync – forward and backward – hardly making any mistakes and disallowing any long-range shots by closing down as quickly as possible. Their midfield is not brilliant by any stretch of imagination, but they are disciplined. They do not panic with the ball even under intense pressure and look for the best option available instead of risking a through ball which can result in loss of possession. Off the ball movement is impressive and even the pressing is laudable.
Through out the campaign, APOEL have created very few chances but have been deadly in front of the goal. But against Lyon, they carved many openings but could not convert them into goals. Against Real Madrid, they will have fewer chances than usual and they have to capitalize all of them to have any outside chance when they travel to Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg. They have lost Gustavo Manduca, their most impressive player to a suspension but will be hoping it balances out with the suspension of Real Madrid’s midfield maestro, Xabi Alonso.
Ivan Jovanovic, the Serbian coach, described by the President of Cypus as the ‘architect’ behind this incredible achievement, has assembled a squad with a mix of home-grown talent and the right mix of international players (not stars). The upcoming encounter will be the biggest test for him. APOELai??i??s budget or squad or footballing pedigree is negligible compared to their opponents, Real Madrid. The entire budget ($13 million) of the Cypriot side is 1/10 of the amount Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo.
