The Mariners have a tricky away game against Shillong Lajong as they look to bounce back from their shock 2-3 loss against Prayag United. After leading at half time against Prayag, the Green & Maroons lost their nerve to lose 2-3 and surrender three points to fall six points behind leaders Dempo Sports Club in the race for the I-League title. Dealing a further blow to their hopes tomorrow would be the absence of three of their players who started in that game and have been their standout performers this season – Syed Rahim Nabi, Jewel Raja and Sunil Chhetri will all miss tomorrows game due to their SAFF Cup commitments which means that Bagan would have to play out of their skins on an uneven turf at Kunan Lamphak Stadium in Imphal if they have to take all three points against Lajong.

There are no such problems for Shillong Lajong who have the entire squad at their disposal. Confidence though would be short amongst Pradhyum Reddyai??i??s boys after the 0-5 mauling they received at the hands of Dempo Sports Club in the previous game. They looked out of sorts in Goa and the defense came in for a lot of criticism. The back four were completely torn apart against Dempo and they will have to improve by leaps and bounds if they have to challenge Bagan in their game tomorrow. Ai??It is unlikely that coach Pradhyum Reddy will make any changes to his defense. Lalthuanmawia Ralte will continue in goal while Wailadmi Passah and Aibhor Khongjee will continue at central defense. Zhomingliana Ralte and M. Zenith will be the preferred options on the wings although Subhash Singh could get a nod in. John Menyongar and Christopher Chizoba will be the other two foreigners who will take the field and there may be a part for James Giblee to play later on in the game. Lalchuanmawia and Lalramluaha will be the two mainstays in midfield for the boys from the North East.

Much would however depend on the foreigners and their ability to combine well will determine whether Shillong Lajong get anything from the game. Subhas Bhowmick though will be desperate for the three points after losing the momentum that he gained from the win in the bitter derby. Baganai??i??s loss last week means that although they occupy second spot in the table, they are already six points behind pole position. Losing Jewel Raja, Nabi and Sunil Chhetri would be a big blow for the Mariners. Sangram Mukherjee will most probably keep his place in goal, while the likely defence would have Surkumar Singh, Anwar Ali, Dhanarajan and Souvik Chakraborty. Barreto and Odafa will have a major role to play in the absence of Sunil Chhetri while Hudson Lima would have to spray all the balls for Odafa and Barreto to slam them at the back of the net. Shillong Lajong sit tenth in the table and a defeat would suck them into the relegation zone.

It will be an intriguing contest to see who comes out on top in this high pressure clash especially after both teams are going into this game after demoralizing defeats.

TheHardTackle’s Players To Watch Out For:

Odafa Okolie (Mohun Bagan), john Menyongar (Shillong Lajong)

TheHardTackle’s Prediction:

Shillong Lajong 1-1 Mohun Bagan

Salgaocar Sports Clubai??i??s struggling form this season has everyone rubbing their eyes in disbelief. After a superb win in the Federation Cup, everyone expected the defending champions to put in a strong performance in this year’s League but things have gone from bad to worse for Karim Bencherifaai??i??s boys. They have won just two of their seven games and have three defeats to their credit, together with the two draws. They are unbeaten however in three games and that must be something that Karim Bencherifa takes inspiration from.

Missing from their line-up tomorrow would be their two standout performers this season – Karanjit Singh and Rocus Lamare who are with the Indian team. Former Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Vinay Singh would be the direct replacement for Karanjit Singh while Biswajit Saha or Ishfaq Ahmed could make the grade in midfield. The rest of the Salgaocar squad would remain unchanged. Last time round Karim preferred to start with Chidi and Junior upfront relegating Japanese Ryuji Sueoka to the bench. He may be tempted though to start this game with the Japanese alongside Chidi Edeh. Luciano and Jaspal will man the central defence for the Green brigade from Goa. Three points is a must for Salgaocar, who are already 13 points adrift of the top. Games like these have become must win for Karimai??i??s men and they need to accumulate maximum points before their sojourn in Asia begins.

Chirag Kerala, after their opening-day win, have had nothing to cheer about apart from the lone draw. Five defeats have left them tottering at 12thAi??position in the table, two points adrift of safety. Their best defender Charles Dzisah will not play the game after receiving a red card against Pailan Arrows. Lack of goals has been their biggest concern – they have scored just four goals in their seven games. Anil kumar has rejoined them on loan from Dempo Sports Club but has still not been able to fire for them. They have the worst defensive record in the League conceding 18 goals in their seven games and the absence of Charles Dzisah will deal them a further blow. Their foreigners have also been a big let down for them. Michael Mattricciani has rarely made it to the starting eleven and has been mostly benched. Although technically they are safe with their 12th position, Pailan Arrowsai??i?? occupation of the 13th spot would mean that it is they who will be relegated if things stand this way. It is still early in the season but they need to get their act quickly together if they are to survive for another season in Indiaai??i??s top flight.

TheHardTackle’s Players To Watch Out For:

Ryuji Sueoka (Salgaocar Sports Club), V. Vineeth (Chirag United Kerala)

TheHardTackle’s Prediction:

Chirag United Kerala 0-1 Salgaocar

Mumbai FC will look to get back to back winning ways when they take on struggling Pailan Arrows at Kolkata. Khalid Jamils boys broke their run of five successive losses with a stunning 2-1 upset of Sporting Clube de Goa in their previous match and will look to increase their points tally against the India U-23 players. They have no injury or suspension worries and will have their full strength side to pick from. Coach Jmail will be particularly pleased with the performance of his midfield. Cavin Lobo is improving with every game while Nicholas Rodrigues has continued the fom that he showed last season. Ebi Sukore too has shouldered bulk of the responsibility in midfield. They were unlucky to lose the games against Salgaocar and Churchill by narrow 1-0 margins and could easily have walked away with a point from their match against the I-League champions Salgaocar if not for Abhishek Yadavai??i??s muffed penalty.

Pailan Arrows on the other hand, are in the relegation zone languishing at 13th position. Although there is no relegation for them they will need to put in some good performances tro justify their presence in Indiaai??i??s top flight football league. Coach Sukhwinder Singhai??i??s main concern has been the lack of goals. Arrows have scored just four goals this season and are yet to taste their first victory of the season. Lalrozana Fanai has been good for them in midfield but he will be missing todays game due to a double booking. Mumbai FC are the favourites for this match and Arrows young defender Prathamesh Maulingkar will have to defend well if he is to stop Mumbai from scoring. Lalawmpuia will also be used as an impact player late in the second half by khalid Jamil if they are in need of a goal. This is a great chance for Mumbai FC to go five points clear of the relegation zone specially with Chirag Kerala having tough opponents in the form of Salgaocar Sports Club. Khalid Jamil will be desperate for all three points specially when he has his full team to choose from.

TheHardtackleai??i??s Players to watch out for:

Ebi Sukore ( Mumbai FC), Prathamesh Maulingkar (Pailan Arrows)

Dempo Sports Club and Churchill Brothers clash in a high voltage derby that will be devoid of Indian stars. Dempo have officially lodged a protest with the AIFF and are understood to be playing this game under protest. Dempo have been the hardest hit among all the teams with as many as seven players missing from their line-up. Their winning streak will come under severe pressure today as they take on Churchill Brothers who also have three players missing and a fourth suspended due to a double booking. Half of Dempoai??i??s midfield and defence has been wiped out and they will sport a new look. Mahesh Gawli, Samir Naik and Subhasish Roy Chowdhury are all missing in defence and in goal. In their absence, Laxmikant Kattimani will guard goal while Valeriano Rebello, Cresson Antao, Rowilson Rodrigues and Debabrata Roy will man the defence. In midfield, Dempo will be forced to field U-20 midfielder Brian Rodrigues on the left in the absence of Clifford Miranda. Joe Rodrigues will play on the right of midfield while Peter Carvalho and Godwin Franco will be at the centre. Koko Sakibo and Ranty Martins will play upfront. The irony is that Dempo have registered just 26 players so far out of which 4 are goalkeepers. Seven are missing due to National Team commitments which means Dempo are left with just 15 outfield players out of which three are U-20 players. All the U-20 players will have to be seated on the bench else Dempo do not even have seven substitutes to name. it is obvious that the AIFF has mismanaged the whole show but nevertheless Dempo will look to maintain their all win record.

Churchill Brothers, on the other hand, have four of their players missing. Steven Dias, Gourmangi Singh and Lalrindika Ralte are on SAFF Cup duty while Dharmaraj Ravanan is out due to a double booking. Beto is expected to be fit for the clash but it is unlikely that coach Manuel Gomes will risk him for the entire match. Jerry Zirsanga is expected to fill in on the vacant right position while Raju Yamnan and Jagpreet Singh will man the defence along with Denzil Franco and Antun Kovacic. Ai??Lenny Rodrigues, Bineesh Balan and M.P. Zakeer will be the other choices in midfield. The absence of national stars means that this will be an even contest. Last year, Dempo annihilated Churchill 5-2 in the corresponding fixture and Churchill will be hoping to make amends this time specially in the absence of seven of Dempoai??i??s players. Churchill are already seven points adrift of Dempo and a loss here would almost mean curtains for them this season while a win would help them to second position ahead of Mohun Bagan.

Pune FC meet bottom of the table HAL in another eigth round encounter which Derrick Pereiraai??i??s boys have to win in order to push up the table. The Red Lizards are currently in 10thAi??position but a win would leapfrog them to 7thAi??in the table if Air India lose to Prayag United. It has been a luckless seven rounds for them so far due to injuries and suspensions. Subrata Paul will continue to be missing with a knee injury while Jeje Lalpekhlua and Baldeep Singh will be on SAFF Cup duty. Dohou Pierre will also have to sit out due to suspension that will leave a gaping hole in midfield for them. Abhra Mondal, after a superb debut in the previous game, will continue in goal while the return to full fitness of Guinea striker Mandjou Keita will definitely get Pune FC back among the goals. HAL, on the other hand, are in big trouble and are rooted at the bottom of the table. However, they could take inspiration from their 1-0 win over Pune FC in the corresponding fixture last season. After last years great escape, HAL have failed to reproduce the form of last season where they escaped relegation on the final day of the season. The loss of key players like Xavier Vijaykumar has pegged them back this year. Although they are just four points away from safety their track record is disappointing. They have lost six and were lucky to get a point in their previous game. Their goals have dried up – Just 4 all season and on the other hand they have conceded the most number – 18 – together with Mumbai FC. A win for Pune is most likely on the cards while HAL will look to stay afloat in this years League.

Prayag United will continue to maintain their unbeaten run as they take on Air India at kolkata. Prayag and Dempo are the only two unbeaten teams in the competition. Prayag will be high on confidence after their stunning come from behind 3-2 win over Mohun Bagan in their previous game and will be looking to take all three points against Air India who until their previous game were unbeaten in four. They are sitting pretty in seventh place and a win could provisionally take them to 5thAi??place in the table. They however have two players who are suspended. Ramandeep Singh and Manandeep Singh will both sit out of this game and their absence would definitely put a huge stress on their midfield. A lot will fall on the shoulders of Soccor Velho and Allan Dias to bail them out of trouble. No such problems for Prayag United who are without any injures or suspensions. They also do not have any players in the India team which means that Subrata Bhattacharya has a full strength team to pick from. Yakubu will once again be the man to lead the attack along with Joshimar and Kayne Vincent although only one out of these two will play considering that the coach prefers Bello Rasaq as the third foreigner in defence. Denson Devedas and Sankar Oaron have done a marvelous job in defense and Sankar has also been among the goals for Prayag. A win for them could move them to second place if Churchill lose to Dempo which could help them make a serious challenge for the title. What has hurt them most is the number of draws they have had this season and if they could convert these draws into wins they will be in a serious position to mount a challenge for the title.

East Bengal play their first game in Goa this season taking on the youthfulness of Sporting Clube de Goa in the final match of this round. East Bangal have arrived in Goa without their first choice goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and defender Nirmal Chhetri who is in SAFF Cup duty. It is unclear whether Mehtab Hossain has regained full fitness and will play in this game. It has been a stop start season for the Red and Golds this season. They are yet to get on an unbeaten run this season although now they seem to be slowly peaking. Their 8-1 demolition of HAL in the previous game would have given them a lot of confidence specially after that hurting loss to eternal rivals Mohun Bagan in the Kolkata derby. Coach Trevor Morgan will once again start with the preferred strike pair of Tolgay Ozbay and Robin Simgh while Alan Gow will once again start on the bench hoping for a role to play late in the game. Penn Orji has played like a champion in midfield especially in the absence of Mehtab and he has been the reason why Mehtab has not been missed much for the Red and Golds. One again, his battle with Ogba Kalu in the centre of the park will determine which way the wind swings at Fatorda. East Bengal though would have to watch out for the youthfulness of Flaming Oranje who will be hoping to make amends after their first loss of the season against Mumbai FC in their previous game. James Moga and Victorino Fernandes will lead the attack for Sporting while Kalu together with Freiman Peixoto, Joseph Pereira and Adil Khan would be in midfield. Ekendra Singh has so far gone with young guns in midfield specially on the flanks with youngsters like Rowlin Borges. Jovel Martins and Joyner Lourenco enjoying decent number of starts this season! Their main problem has been their defence that has conceded 11 goals this season. Samananda Singh and Keita Boubacar have been caught out a number of times and they will face their hardest test yet when they defend against the likes of Tolgay Ozbay who is fresh from a four goal blitz against HAL and Robin Singh. A cracker of a contest to end round 8!
