As we head to the Christmas break, we take a look at the top five matches played till December. It has been a tough first half of the season for the Rossoneri and they not only faced the best in Italy, but also the best in the world. Win or loss, these five matches proved Milan’s resilience as being the top dog in Italy.
Top 5 matches
Barcelona 2-2 AC Milan
Dubbed as the clash of Group H, this match saw present Champions, Barcelona, take on the Italian Champions, Milan, at Camp Nou. Milan were bracing for a storm in this match, as they were ravaged due to injuries to key members. Ibrahimovicai??i??s injury just before this match did not help the Rossoneri either. But with their available resources, Milan took on Barcelona in what would go on to be one of the more memorable European outings for the Italians.

Pato scored the fifth fastest goal in Champions League history as the Spaniards were pegged back within 30 seconds into the match. The drawback of having a makeshift center-back pair was showing and Pato took full advantage of it. Blazing past Mascherano, The Duck coolly slotted the ball under a rushing Valdes.
Stung so early in the game, Barcelona fought their way back into the match and tied the proceedings via a Pedro goal as both the teams entered the tunnel with one goal apiece at half-time. A superbly taken Villa free kick gave the lead to Barcelona, and for a longer period of the match, it looked the Spaniards will claim full points. A superb defensive display from the veteran Nesta even left Messi thumping the ground in frustration.
The incredible game saw a late twist as Thiago Silva scored in the dying moments of the match to give Milan a share of the spoils.
Someone correctly said “The first and the last minutes of the match belonged to the two Brazilians; the rest of the time Messi tried his tricks against Nesta and co.“
Napoli 3-1 AC Milan
It was the initial stages of the campaign and Milan had just about familiarized the new signings with their way of playing. Along came Napoli, one of the top dogs, and with them the devastating force known as Edinson Cavani. Milan were without their totem, Ibrahimovic and they had to play Seedorf and Bonera in the first team.

A brilliant ball from Cassano found Aquilani’s head and the Italian made no mistake in finding the top left corner. Milan seemed to be throbbing with life as Cassano proved to be difficult to be restrained. Cavani scored his first of the night through Abbiati’s legs and he scored his second off a brilliant counter-attack. A cannon-like shot passed through Abbiati as Cavani raced to the fans to celebrate. Aquilani had a good chance to pull one back for Milan but fumbled inside the box. Pato did not do much better, heading over a ball which any other day would have ended at the back of the net. Cavani finished his hat-trick when the ball ricocheted off Nesta.
A talking point after this match was the yellow card to Nesta, who shoved away Aronica. A cool customer, Nesta lost it after being tackled from behind. Cassano proved once again why he is so revered in Milan, as he carved away chances after chances for his teammates.
Juventus 2-0 AC Milan
Juventus hosted Milan in their new stadium in what was the first big match in the Serie A calender. Expectations were high from both sides, as the Conte-led Juventus looked to take full points from a Milan side ravaged by injuries. However, that is never an excuse when one is playing with a team filled with the likes of Buffon and Pirlo. Juventus, on the other hand, freed from European duty have focused all their attention on the national front and are looking to build a team that can challenge for top honors in years to come.

The starting formation of Milan gave them away as they were exposed down the flanks. Fielding a narrow formation against Juventus, much akin to their European mentality came back to haunt the Champions this time around. An intense game continued till the last five minutes, when Milan lost the plot. First a goal from Marchisio and then a blooper from the experienced Abbiati handed all three points to the Bianconeri as Milan gathered only 5 points from as many matches at the stage of the League.
Lecce 3-4 AC Milan
A difficult fixture against Juventus was followed by an equally tough fixture against Palermo at the San Siro. After these two matches, Lecce seemed like an easy encounter. But the match turned out to be anything but easy for the red side of Milan. So much so, it was voted as the best match that month.
Lecce scored their first from a free kick, where Giacomazzi out-jumped everyone to put the ball into the back of the net. A controversial penalty from a corner resulted in Lecce’s second which was tucked away by ex-Rossonero, Massimo Oddo. And then the third was added by Grossmuller when Luca Antonini failed to clear Giacomazzi’s ball. Milan had committed almost as many mistakes in that single match as the had committed in the entire last season and Allegri knew he had to do something to stem the rot.

Out went Ambrosini and Robinho and in came Aquilani and Boateng. The next 45 minutes were probably the best 45 minutes of Serie A action this season as Milan clawed their way back into the match. A comeback of this nature is almost unheard of in Italian football and it was this match where Boateng proved his worth. An unmarked Boateng fired in his first two goals, the second one being an exquisite curler. Boateng completed his hat-trick as Milan seemed to feed of his aura. The fourth goal was in the making as Milan now played with a sense of confidence and maturity. Yepes’ header completed the tremendous comeback. Down in the dumps, Milan not only showed resilience but also their unyielding willpower and strength of character to fightback.
AC Milan 4-1 Parma
Having come on top in their last match against Lecce, where they fought back from a three goal deficit at half time, Milan now were faced with Parma at home. In the match that followed, Milan showed ruthlessness and efficiency, blocking out Parma. Cassano was at his best in this match, showing his close control, dribbling and passing skills. If only his finishing would have been better, Milan woudl have finished with an even higher scoreline.

This match is however significant because of Nocerino’s hat-trick. Ibrahimovic’s ability to hold up play is well-known as he provided the ball for Nocerino’s first. The second goal was a more sumptuous one, belted from few feet above the ground with his left foot, leaving the keeper with no chance as the ball nestled in the top left corner. Nocerino’s third, off a Cassano assist rounded off a wonderful night for Milan.
