Liverpool have been handed a major blow in their pursuit of RB Leipzig star Konrad Laimer.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Premier League giants have been handed a setback in their pursuit of RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer as the 2022 summer transfer window draws to a close.
The Reds are going through an injury crisis of sorts in midfield at this moment in time. Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara have joined Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines, while Curtis Jones only recently returned to training. James Milner and Jordan Henderson are getting older by the day, while Fabinho has looked off form.
While Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho can also do a job in the role, the duo are inexperienced and are still getting used to the demands of being a Liverpool first-teamer. The Reds need to bring in reinforcements to ensure that they don’t shoot themselves in the foot in what could be a long season.
With just hours to go before the 2022 summer transfer window slams shut, options are limited. One of the names on the club’s radar was Laimer, who was seen as a comparatively cheap option. Despite the midfielder’s contract running out next year, Leipzig are not interested in letting the player leave on the cheap.
Liverpool will need to splash the cash to land the 25-year-old, something that they are unlikely to do. The Reds have often refrained from paying through the nose, and it is difficult to see them make an exception. As things stand, Laimer looks set to stay on at Leipzig this summer.
Jurgen Klopp revealed earlier yesterday that he would like the club to take more risks in the transfer market. The Reds have more often than not got their dealings right in the last few years, but leaving the midfield unaddressed this summer could prove to be catastrophic.
While the attack and the defence have the look of a Rolls-Royce, the Reds’ midfield lacks both in terms of quality and quantity. This has proven costly thrice already in the Premier League this season, leaving Liverpool winless in their first three league games. One wouldn’t bet against more clubs getting the better of the Reds in transition unless proper measures are taken soon.
