Premier League heavyweights Manchester United are reportedly willing to shell out €10 million to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona this summer.
According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, as relayed by Sport Witness, Memphis Depay will unlikely join Juventus but might still get a major move before the summer transfer window shuts down. Manchester United could soon table a bid worth €10 million to secure the services of the Barcelona attacker.
There have been many talking points in the summer transfer window thus far but none bigger than FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants have taken some intriguing decisions this summer to rebuild the squad at Xavi Hernandez’s disposal while leaving the futures of some players highly uncertain.
One such player is Memphis Depay, who ended 2021/22 as Barcelona’s top scorer but has fallen to the bottom of the pecking order for attackers at Camp Nou. The 28-year-old is yet to feature in a competitive game for Barcelona thus far this season, as he has become surplus to requirements. And a return to Manchester United could be on the cards for Depay.
Depay has previously spent a short and frustrating stint with Manchester United, where he failed to stamp his authority. The Dutch international subsequently joined Lyon to resurrect his career before sealing a Bosman move to Barcelona last summer. And his career might come a full circle soon.
Manchester United submitted an enquiry to sign Depay last month but have since focused on signing Antony from Ajax. Cody Gakpo has also emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, although recent reports claimed their interest has cooled. The Red Devils are thus setting their sights on the Barcelona attacker again.
Depay’s versatility should make him an asset for Erik ten Hag amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. And Manchester United could soon submit a bid worth €10 million to prise the 28-year-old away from Barcelona. The development is somewhat surprising, considering Depay has coerced Barcelona to terminate his contract.
But with the Dutch attacker’s move to Juventus stalling, Barcelona’s stance over terminating his deal might have changed. Recouping around €10 million by selling Depay to Manchester United could appeal to Barcelona as they look to balance their books and register Jules Kounde.
