Willian is reportedly closing in on joining Fulham after reportedly terminating his contract with Brazilian outfit Corinthians.
According to GOAL, Fulham are inching closer to the capture of former Chelsea and Arsenal superstar Willian this summer after the veteran winger terminated his contract with Corinthians.
Willian spent eight years in England after joining Chelsea in the summer of 2013 from Anzhi Makhachkala. The 34-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful seven-season stint at Stamford Bridge before signing for Arsenal in the summer of 2020 on a Bosman deal after his contract with Chelsea had run out.
However, Willian’s spell at the Emirates was not memorable enough as he struggled to make an impact for Mikel Arteta’s side. And after just a year at the club, the veteran Brazilian left the Gunners to return to his homeland, signing for his boyhood club Corinthians. In his second stint with the club, the 34-year-old has made 45 appearances, scoring just one goal and setting up six more.
Willian’s contract with Corinthians ran until the end of next year. However, the winger sought a swift return to England as he struggled with injuries during his time at the club while his family failed to adapt as expected after moving to Brazil.
To that end, the former Chelsea and Arsenal ace is believed to have terminated his contract with Corinthians, sacrificing his salary for the next 14 months to return to the Premier League. And the 34-year-old is likely to find his way back to London again, with Fulham emerging as his next destination.
Back in the Premier League after winning the EFL Championship last season, Fulham are working hard to strengthen their squad in a bid to retain their top-flight status beyond the current season. They have made some interesting additions so far, bringing in the likes of Andreas Pereira, Manor Solomon, Joao Palhinha and Kevin Mbabu, among others.
The arrivals of Pereira and Solomon bolster Fulham’s attacking unit, but they are keen on adding Willian to their roster as well. While he might have had a difficult time back at Corinthians, the 34-year-old will add a lot of value to this Fulham roster due to his experience and proven pedigree, having made close to 260 appearances in the Premier League, winning two titles – both with Chelsea.
With Willian reportedly terminating his contract with Corinthians, he is now closing in on a move to Craven Cottage and can prove to be a shrewd purchase for Marco Silva’s side.
