Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested in signing Memphis Depay from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Borussia Dortmund over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old forward is surplus to requirements at Camp Nou, with Barcelona keen on selling him this month.
Memphis Depay completed the most prominent move of his career when he joined Barcelona in a Bosman move after running down his contract with Lyon last summer. But the Dutch attacker will feel hard done by, as he had finished his debut season with the Blaugrana as their top scorer, finding the back of the net 13 times in 37 games across all competitions.
The Catalan giants have reinforced their attacking unit four times this summer. And with Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele already ahead of him in the pecking order, Depay will likely become a peripheral figure for Barcelona in the upcoming season. Barcelona will thus look to cash in on him this summer, with Borussia Dortmund emerging as the latest suitor for his signature.
The Bundesliga giants are in flux after losing Sebastien Haller indefinitely due to the detection of a malignant tumour. The Ivory Coast international will undergo treatment for the health scare, and he will be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future, thus compelling Borussia Dortmund to delve into the market again for an attacking reinforcement.
The Black and Yellows have sold Erling Haaland to Manchester City this summer, thus leaving them light in the striking department. And with Haller unavailable for several months, Depay has emerged as a viable target for Borussia Dortmund, who will soon launch an enquiry for the Barcelona man.
But the Bundesliga giants only want to sign Depay on a free transfer or loan, which might create an issue as Barcelona will look to recoup €20 million from his sale. However, Depay is ready to walk away from Barcelona for free, which might align with Dortmund’s desired transfer method.
The 28-year-old is currently negotiating his departure from Barcelona, and the method of his move will be explicit in the coming days. So Borussia Dortmund will be waiting with bated breath to find out if they can sign Depay from Barcelona for free or on a loan deal this summer.
