Japhet Tanganga has emerged as a possible defensive signing for AS Roma ahead of the new season, with AC Milan in competition for the Tottenham star.
According to Il Matino, as relayed by Roma Press, Japhet Tanganga is a potential target for AS Roma, as Jose Mourinho targets a new defender ahead of the new season. However, the Tottenham academy graduate is also a target for AC Milan.
Roma are keen on bringing balance to their squad ahead of the new season. Winning the UEFA Europa Conference League last season has presented the Serie A club with opportunities to strengthen their current team. And a new central defender is considered necessary by manager Mourinho.
Eric Bailly is one of their key targets, although the Serie A giants are not prepared to pay Manchester United’s €10 million asking price. Hence, Mourinho is considering alternatives for his backline, and one of his former Tottenham players has emerged on the club’s radar.
Japhet Tanganga’s name has been mentioned as a potential target for the Giallorossi. The Tottenham defender will be allowed to depart north London this summer, with Italy seemingly his next destination. AC Milan have an agreement in principle for the versatile star, although Roma’s entry in the chase could change the equation.
Tanganga is keen to sign for Milan but is not prepared to wait for long periods before the transfer is confirmed. The defender wants to join a side where he can play regularly, and it won’t matter if it’s Milan or Roma.
Hence, Roma are sensing an opportunity in the market as they ponder making a loan move. A reunion with former manager Mourinho could make Tanganga’s transition to Italian football comfortable. After all, the young defender enjoyed his first-team breakthrough at Tottenham under the Portuguese tactician’s tutelage.
However, the lure of signing for Milan, who have been chasing him for some time now, could be tempting enough to turn down Roma’s overtures. Furthermore, the Serie A champions will be playing in the UEFA Champions League whereas Roma will participate in the Europa League, which could also play a role in his decision.
As things stand, the race for Tanganga is heating up, as the 23-year-old defender closes in on an exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
