Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Chelsea forward Timo Werner, who could depart from Stamford Bridge this summer.
Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea. That’s according to 90 min, who claim the German forward is among a host of high-profile players that the Magpies have been offered in recent weeks.
Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth are looking to strengthen their attacking options, having spent the first half of the summer transfer window further tightening up the defensive unit. Newcastle United are casting their net far and wide for offensive reinforcements but are finding navigating the market a little tricky.
Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin look to be out of reach, while priority target Hugo Ekitike has headed to Paris Saint-Germain. Newcastle United may have money thanks to PIF’s investment, but their spending is still constrained by Financial Fair Play as well as the club’s limited commercial revenue generating streams at this early stage of their project.
One intriguing name that has been connected with Newcastle is Chelsea prospect Armando Broja. But with Thomas Tuchel still hesitant to let go of the Albanian striker, they might end up chasing another Chelsea striker. Earlier this week, reports claimed that Newcastle were eyeing a summer swoop for Timo Werner. Now, it appears the German striker has been offered to them, with the Londoners seeking to offload the 26-year-old this summer.
Werner has struggled to live up to the billing since joining Chelsea from RB Leipzig two years ago. He has failed to establish himself as a nailed-on starter in the Blues’ attack, first under Frank Lampard and now under current manager Tuchel. His tally of 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances for the West London outfit is far from disastrous.
But it still pales in comparison to his prolific spell in the Bundesliga, where Werner put up numbers amongst the very best forwards in Europe. Nevertheless, his ability to produce the goods in front of goal has remained questionable and has divided opinion throughout his time at Chelsea.
Despite the departure of Romelu Lukaku, Werner is likely to remain out of favour at Stamford Bridge, with Tuchel aiming to rebuild his front line, having already brought in Raheem Sterling from Manchester City. The player himself has not ruled out leaving Chelsea this summer to gain regular minutes elsewhere, with one eye on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

While offloading Werner will not be an easy task thanks to his lengthy contract, which still has three years left to run, and his astronomical wages, there has been some interest from Juventus and Newcastle United of late. If Newcastle decide to make a move for Werner, it will likely be on a loan deal. Even then, the Magpies will have to break their wage structure with the German international currently netting in the region of £270,000 per week at Chelsea.
