Arsenal could launch the offensive to secure the services of Memphis Depay this summer, with Barcelona hoping to recoup €15 million from his sale.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Arsenal over a possible move in the summer transfer window. Barcelona will look to recoup €15 million from the sale of the Dutch forward, who does not feature in Xavi Hernandez’s plans.
Memphis Depay is in a spot of bother ahead of his second season with Barcelona. The 28-year-old had ended his debut campaign with the Blaugrana as their top scorer for 2021/22, finding the back of the net 13 times in 37 games across all competitions despite blowing hot and cold for more than half the term.
But with Barcelona investing heavily in the attacking unit this year, Depay has fallen down the pecking order. The Catalan giants have secured the services of Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski in 2021. And with Ousmane Dembele signing a new contract, Depay is closer to the bottom of the priority list of options at Xavi Hernandez’s disposal.
The Dutch forward has been reluctant to leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window, insisting he wants to remain at Camp Nou beyond the summer transfer window. But with Barcelona ready to cash in on him for around €15 million, Depay might have no choice but to depart. And Arsenal could offer him a way out of the Catalan club.
The interest from Arsenal comes in the wake of the rising uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Nicolas Pepe. The Ivory Coast international is surplus to requirements at the Emirates after a sub-par 2021/22 campaign. And while Depay might not be a right-winger, he can add to Mikel Arteta’s options, with his versatility potentially making him an asset for Arsenal.
According to the report, the Gunners are weighing up submitting a bid worth €15 million to secure the services of the Depay. And an offer from Arsenal could soon arrive as Barcelona look to balance their books and get bloated salaries off their books while registering new players.
Recent reports have claimed that Depay might be ready to walk away from Barcelona for free. But not playing in the UEFA Champions League could be a hindrance for Arsenal, and they will hope that shelling out €15 million might bring them closer to landing the Barcelona forward.
