West Ham United are reportedly considering making an offer of €15 million for Atalanta right-back Joakim Maehle this summer.
According to the print edition of Corriere della Serra (Bergamo edition), as relayed by Hammers.News, West Ham United are pondering submitting an offer for Atalanta and Denmark defender Joakim Maehle.
The 25-year-old rose through the ranks at Danish outfit Aalborg BK before earning his spurs with Belgian club KRC Genk, where he spent three and a half years before joining Atalanta in January 2021. Since arriving in Italy, Maehle has been a fairly regular presence in the lineup for La Dea, making 60 appearances in which he has scored three and assisted four goals.
Primarily a right-back, Maehle is capable of playing out on the left flank as well and has done well in both positions for club and country. His performances have led to West Ham United showing an interest in signing him up in the ongoing summer transfer window.
West Ham United have made a relatively slow start to the transfer window. Having signed Nayef Aguerd and Alphonse Areola in the past few weeks, they recently completed the capture of Flynn Downes. But plenty of business remains to be done for David Moyes’ side, who will need quality depth in the squad as they gear up for a season in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
West Ham United have two reliable options in Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson in the right-back slot. So, the interest in Maehle does come as a bit puzzling, although the Danish international’s ability to play at left-back could be a reason behind the pursuit.
The east London club are considering the prospect of offloading Arthur Masuaku this summer. And with Aaron Cresswell not impressing much in the last season, someone like Maehle can be a handy player to have on the roster. So, even though a new right-back might not be a top priority for Moyes and West Ham, the 25-year-old can prove to be a valuable addition to the team.
To that end, West Ham United are now considering making an offer worth €15 million for Maehle, with the report claiming that Atalanta could accept a bid around that region. Whether the Hammers press ahead with their pursuit of the 25-year-old Denmark defender will be interesting to see.
