Nico Gonzalez is reportedly considering leaving Barcelona on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Nico Gonzalez could leave FC Barcelona on a loan deal in the summer transfer window. But the 20-year-old will only depart from Camp Nou if a suitor offers him regular game-time in the 2022/23 season.
Nico Gonzalez is one of the finest young midfielders to have emanated from Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia in the past decade. And the Spaniard has benefitted from the Catalan club’s struggles on the financial front, which has forced managers to fast-track promising prospects from the youth setup to the first-team squad.
Gavi is the most shining exponent of Barcelona’s forced policy in the last couple of years, but Nico has also succeeded due to the same outlook. After the Blaugrana scrambled to keep hold of him at Camp Nou beyond last summer’s transfer window, the 20-year-old slowly grew in stature within the first-team squad.
As a result, the Spanish midfielder turned out 36 times for Barcelona in the 2021/22 season. But keeping Barcelona’s expected transfer business in mind, Nico might be bracing himself for a tough season if he remains at Camp Nou beyond the summer transfer window.
The Catalan giants have also secured the services of Franck Kessie in a Bosman move, with the Ivory Coast international’s arrival bloating Xavi Hernandez’s midfield options. Kessie’s arrival has left the Barcelona boss with Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi and Nico at his disposal, in addition to the former AC Milan talisman.
While de Jong and Riqui Puig could leave Barcelona this summer, the Blaugrana will prioritise signing Bernardo Silva from Manchester City as de Jong’s replacement. So Nico’s prospects do not seem bright, especially with Busquets still a regular for Xavi heading into the 2022/23 season.

So a summer departure seems the right call for the 20-year-old, who has drawn interest from Marseille, Wolverhampton Wanderers and other clubs thus far in the summer transfer window. But Nico will only leave Barcelona to join a club where he feels he can feature prominently to continue his progress. A critical window beckons the young midfield prospect.
