Real Madrid midfield mainstay Toni Kroos has reportedly refused to sign a new contract with the club and will consider his options in the next year.
According to Cadena SER, Toni Kroos has decided to hold off on signing a new contract with Real Madrid as he wishes to assess his performances and situation before committing to a new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Signed from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014, Kroos has attained legendary status at Real Madrid, having played an essential role in the success that the Merengues have achieved since his arrival. The German has formed a legendary midfield trifecta with Luka Modric and Casemiro, which has been integral to Real Madrid’s trophy haul in recent years.
Kroos has been part of four UEFA Champions League-winning sides while also lifting three La Liga titles. In total, the 32-year-old has made 364 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 25 goals and setting up 83 more. However, Kroos is entering the final year of his contract with Real Madrid this summer, leading to speculations over his future.
There had been rumours that the former Bayern Munich superstar could consider retirement when his existing deal with the reigning Spanish and European champions runs out. However, they have gone quiet of late, with Real Madrid looking to tie him down to a new contract to prolong his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid have already made two headline signings this summer while they are also working on tying down their key players to new contracts. Luka Modric has already penned a new deal with the La Liga champions, while Vinicius Junior is on the verge of extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu as well.
Real Madrid have also tabled a new offer for Eder Militao amidst interest from Chelsea. And as per Cadena SER, Los Blancos have also proposed a new contract extension to Kroos. However, it is stated that the 32-year-old midfielder is holding off on signing the proposal for now as he wishes to assess his performances in the coming season before deciding on his next move.
The report adds that Kroos wants to renew with Real Madrid only if he is performing at the required level over the coming season, although he is not considering the possibility of retirement at the moment. So, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the coming weeks and months, but for now, the 32-year-old is not signing a new contract with Real Madrid.
