Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to rival Atletico Madrid for the signing of AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi in the summer transfer window.
According to Spanish publication MARCA, Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle it out with La Liga giants in the race to sign AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi this summer.
Disasi came through the ranks at Paris FC before joining Reims, where he earned a reputation for himself as one of the most promising young defenders in France. The 24-year-old joined AS Monaco in the summer of 2020 and has grown leaps and bounds during his time with the Principality outfit.
A mainstay at the back, Disasi is also one of the club captains for Monaco and has made 80 appearances so far, scoring six goals in the process. The French defender was a key operator as the club finished third in Ligue 1 this past season, and his performances have now attracted interest from top clubs across Europe, including Tottenham and Atletico Madrid.
Tottenham have been following Disasi for a couple of years now and have decided to revive their interest in the 24-year-old this summer. Manager Antonio Conte is on the lookout for defensive reinforcements as he seeks to build a team capable of challenging for silverware on all fronts.
Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon are likely to depart in the summer transfer window, while there have been murmurs about the future of Davinson Sanchez as well. The Colombian could be used as a makeweight in Tottenham’s pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni, who is a top target to bolster the left-sided centre-back slot.
So, there is room for another centre-half to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer. And Disasi has emerged as a possible target for Conte’s side. However, Spurs would have to stave off competition from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the race to land the 24-year-old Frenchman.
Atletico Madrid are looking to add more quality to their defence after a disappointing 2021/22 campaign during which they were nowhere near as solid as they can be. Furthermore, Jose Maria Gimenez and Mario Hermoso have been linked with exits, with the former emerging as a transfer target for Manchester City.
If either of them leaves, Diego Simeone’s side will need to bring in a replacement, with Disasi being identified as an option. However, signing him from Monaco will not be easy for Atletico Madrid or Tottenham as he is tied down to a long-term contract until 2025, and the Ligue 1 giants see him as a pivotal part of their team.
