Newcastle United have reportedly been told to shell out £50 million for 24-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are preparing a summer move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez but could have to shell out a significant amount for his signature. Brighton have reportedly slapped a £50 million price tag on the Spanish shot-stopper.
Sanchez rose through the ranks at Brighton after joining them from Levante in 2016 and was first awarded a first-team start in the 2019/20 season. The 24-year-old has since made the number one spot for the club his own, making 65 appearances for them across competitions while keeping 21 clean sheets.
On the back of his impressive performances for Brighton, Sanchez was handed his Spain bow in 2021 as well. The shot-stopper has shown great form for the Premier League side, and it comes as no surprise that he is being courted by other clubs.
Leicester City were said to be interested in the 24-year-old Spanish international as they look for a long-term successor for Kasper Schmeichel, who could be on his way out after 11 seasons with the club. Newcastle United have now emerged as another interested party, with former Brighton transfer guru Dan Ashworth planning a raid on his former club.
But Newcastle United’s plans could be adversely affected by the £50 million price tag that the Seagulls have slapped on Sanchez. Brighton are not ready to let the shot-stopper leave easily, especially as he still has three years remaining on his contract with the club.
The report claims Newcastle are not willing to match Brighton’s £50 million valuation and will look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper. The Magpies have been linked with moves for Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, but even the England international could cost them around £40 million.
FC Porto’s Diogo Costa is another goalkeeper on their transfer wishlist, but the Magpies could give up on signing a shot-stopper altogether this summer. Eddie Howe is confident of their current number one Martin Dubravka’s ability, and they could enter the 2022/23 season with no new additions to their goalkeeping department. Newcastle would instead like to invest in the midfield and attack ahead of the new season.
