Everton keeping tabs on Sergio Gomez

Everton have reportedly scouted former Barcelona prospect Sergio Gomez extensively, with the Anderlecht defender enjoying an impressive 2021/22 season.

According to The Athletic, Everton have been extensively scouting RSC Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez during the 2021/22 campaign as they look to strengthen their backline in the summer.

Gomez came through the youth ranks at La Liga heavyweights Barcelona, and after spending close to eight years at the Catalans’ La Masia academy, he joined Borussia Dortmund in January 2018. The 21-year-old had a two-year loan stint at SD Huesca between 2019 and 2021 before signing for Anderlecht last summer.

Gomez has enjoyed a stunning debut season in Belgium as he finished the campaign with a return of seven goals and 15 assists from 47 games in all competitions. His progress at Anderlecht has seemingly alerted Everton, who have been monitoring his progress throughout the season.

Everton are looking to make some key additions to the roster after having just about survived the threat of relegation from the Premier League. And while a new centre-back is a priority for manager Frank Lampard, the Toffees are also on the lookout for a new left-sided full-back.

Having sold Lucas Digne to Aston Villa during the January transfer window, Everton signed Ukrainian international Vitalii Mykolenko. After a slow start to life in England, he has settled in well and put in some impressive performances towards the backend of the season. But, as far as a backup for Mykolenko goes, Everton have no reliable option.

It is something that manager Lampard is seemingly keen on addressing before the next season kicks off. To that end, Anderlecht’s Gomez has emerged as a transfer target for Everton, with the Merseysiders following him closely during the 2021/22 campaign.

At 21, Gomez is young and dynamic and is brimming with potential. The Spaniard is coming on the back of an exceptional season with Anderlecht and can go on to become an asset for Everton in the years to come, if they sign him. But, with his contract running until 2025, the Toffees might have to shell out a large sum for the ex-Barcelona starlet.

It could force them to look at other options, with Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko already being offered to Lampard’s side ahead of the summer window.
