Official: Aston Villa agree deal to sign Diego Carlos

Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Sevilla over the signing of Diego Carlos this summer.

In an official statement, Aston Villa have confirmed the capture of Diego Carlos. They have reached an agreement with Sevilla over the transfer of the experienced centre-back this summer. The Brazilian is set to travel to Birmingham in the coming hours to complete a medical and sign personal terms with the club.

Carlos is set to become the latest addition to Aston Villa’s summer recruitment project which is going exceptionally well so far. The Villans have already roped in French midfield talent Boubacar Kamara on a free contract while Philippe Coutinho’s loan move from Barcelona was made permanent for a fee of just €20 million.

It means the Sevilla centre-back will become the third signing of the new season for Aston Villa. One would argue it will be the most important of the three, as the club have lacked depth in the central defensive unit over the past six months.

The injury to Ezri Konsa, in particular, had pushed Aston Villa to its limits, with coach Steven Gerrard being forced to put his faith in Calum Chambers to deputise for the first-choice centre-back. To his credit, the former Arsenal defender did rather well alongside Tyrone Mings, helping Villa finish 14th in the league.

But the Villans have set their sights firmly on a European spot come the end of next season. As such, they are prepared to splash the cash in the transfer market, with Carlos becoming their most recent signing of the summer.

From a sporting perspective, the Brazilian is set to compete with Mings and Konsa for a place in the starting eleven. With a combined total of almost 200 appearances in the French and Spanish top-flight, one would expect the 29-year-old stalwart to become a first-team regular in the Villa setup.

Carlos’ dogged defensive mentality, coupled with his immense physique should tune in well to the Premier League’s style of football. His aggression, experience and leadership at the back could go a long way in helping Aston Villa take on the likes of West Ham, Manchester United and Wolves for a place in the Europa League next season.

It is not the end of the road for the Villans, though, when it comes to their market activity. In addition to signing Carlos, they are close to reaching an agreement for Rangers starlet Calvin Bassey, as Gerrard goes through with his plans to upgrade the whole defensive unit ahead of the new season.
