Newcastle United have reportedly been encouraged to pursue Dominic Calvert-Lewin as prime contenders Arsenal are ready to back away.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United could move ahead in the queue for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as major contenders Arsenal are ready to bow out of the chase. Everton are open to selling the Englishman if they receive a reasonable proposal, with the Magpies reportedly preparing an offer.
Everton have endured a difficult time on and off the pitch over the last twelve months. From hiring a controversial, former Liverpool manager to somehow escaping relegation, it will go down as one of the most topsy turvy seasons in their history. But they could descend into further chaos.
Everton do not seem like a club with a plan despite narrowly escaping the drop. The Toffees’ finances are in disarray, and they may need to sell some of their star names to fund new transfers in the summer. That includes players like Richarlison, Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Calvert-Lewin certainly is in high demand among Premier League sides, with Newcastle United keen on signing the English striker. The Magpies struggled for goals this season, scoring only 44 times during the entire campaign. The signing of Chris Wood in January has not worked, while Callum Wilson could not finish the season without encountering injury troubles.
Ironically, Calvert-Lewin endured a goal-shy season, missing a chunk of the campaign with a toe injury. However, he seemed to be fit and firing in the last few weeks, encouraging suitors to approach Everton in the summer. He remains open to a move and would like to sign for an established club such as Arsenal.
The Gunners have been huge admirers of the Everton forward, having chased him for some time. However, their interest has cooled off in recent months, as Arsenal are looking at a different profile of strikers in the market. Gabriel Jesus is supposed to be their primary target in the window, with Arsenal closing in on the Brazilian.
Meanwhile, Eddie Nketiah is on the verge of signing a new deal, which may restrict Arsenal from signing more than one striker in the window. Moreover, Tottenham were also keen on signing Calvert-Lewin, but the expected lack of game time for the Everton striker due to the presence of Harry Kane will prompt him to snub any approaches.
That leaves Newcastle United as the remaining contender in the race to sign the 25-year-old. Calvert-Lewin had reservations about joining the Magpies earlier, but that may change after understanding their progressive project under Eddie Howe.
Everton are reportedly demanding at least £45 million for the English striker, which may not pose a problem for Newcastle United if they are serious about their interest. Calvert-Lewin could become the striker the Magpies are craving for, potentially having a 20-goal season to offer to Newcastle.
Everton may not stand in the way if a reasonable offer, worth around £45 million, arrives, as they could look to reinvest the money and sign players to strengthen their squad. Calvert-Lewin will be an excellent signing for Newcastle, as the striker seems to have put his injury and fitness troubles behind him.
